How to disassemble HP Pavilion dv6
STEP 2.
Remove both covers and pull the DVD drive out.
STEP 3.
Lift up the hard drive assembly and disconnect hard drive cable from
the motherboard.
STEP 4.
Both memory module are located on the bottom.
You can remove both memory modules. Ill leave them connected to
the motherboard.
The CMOS battery located under the memory cover and can be easily
removed/replaced without taking the whole thing apart.
STEP 5.
Remove five screws (yellow) securing the switch cover.
Remove four screws (red) securing the keyboard.
STEP 6.
Lift up one side of the switch cover and continue removing it with your
fingers.
Be careful, the switch cover has two cables connected to the
motherboard. You can see these cables on the next photo.
STEP 7.
Move the switch cover towards the LCD so you can access three screws
securing the keyboard.
Remove three keyboard screws.
STEP 8.
Lift up the top side of the keyboard as it shown on the following photo.
STEP 9.
Move the keyboard towards the LCD screen so you can access the
cable connector underneath.
Before you remove the keyboard, youll have to unlock the connector
and release the cable.
STEP 10.
In order to unlock the keyboard connector, flip up the brown tab with
your fingernail so it opens up at a 90 degree angle.
STEP 11.
On the following photo the keyboard connector shown in the unlocked
position.
Now you can pull the keyboard cable from the connector.
STEP 12.
Remove the keyboard.
STEP 13.
Disconnect two switch cover cables (I mentioned them in step 6) from
the motherboard.
These connectors do not have locks. Simply pull each cable from the
connector.
STEP 14.
Remove the switch cover.
STEP 15.
If you plan to remove the display panel, youll have to disconnect both
antenna cables from the wireless card.
Remove one screw securing the wireless card and remove the card.
STEP 16.
Disconnect two cables (one of them is video cable) from the
motherboard.
Pull wireless card antenna cables though the opening in the bottom
cover.
STEP 17.
Remove four screws securing display hinges.
STEP 18.
Lift up and remove the display assembly. In the next guide Ill
explain how to remove the LCD screen.
STEP 19.
Remove all remaining screws from the bottom case.
One of the screws (green) located in the DVD drive bay.
STEP 20.
Remove four screws securing the speaker assembly.
Disconnect speaker cable from the motherboard.
STEP 21.
Lift up and remove the speaker assembly.
STEP 22.
Remove five screws securing the top cover assembly.
Disconnect touchpad cable from the motherboard.
STEP 23.
Start separating the top cover assembly from the laptop base.
STEP 24.
Remove the top cover assembly.
STEP 25.
Disconnect three cables from the motherboard.
In HP Pavilion dv6 models the DC jack is not soldered to the
motherboard. The DC jack attached to a harness and can be easily
replaced without soldering.
STEP 26.
Remove one screw securing the motherboard. This screw located in
the lower right corner of the motherboard.
STEP 27.
Carefully lift up the right side of the motherboard.
STEP 28.
Remove motherboard from the base assembly.
STEP 29.
Youll find the cooling fan assembly mounted on the other side of the
motherboard.
Now you can clean the heat sink and fan.
Also you can replace the cooling fan assembly if it failed.
Remove both covers with a sharp object and glue somewhere on the
bezel (so they dont get lost).
Remove both screws found under those covers.
STEP 2.
Carefully separate the bezel from the display cover.
You can use a guitar pick as case cracker.
STEP 3.
Continue separating the bezel with your fingers.
STEP 4.
Using the guitar pick (or any other piece of plastic) separate the bezel
from the cover in the hinge area.
STEP 5.
Remove the bezel.
STEP 6.
Remove eight screws securing LCD mounting brackets to the display
cover.
STEP 7.
Carefully separate the LCD screen assembly from the display cover and
place it face down on the table.
STEP 8.
Now you can access the video cable connector on the back side.
STEP 9.
Unplug the video cable connector.
STEP 10.
Separate the LCD assembly from the display cover.
STEP 11.
Finally, remove mounting brackets (hinges) on both sides of the
damaged LCD screen and transfer them to a new one.
STEP 2.
Slide the battery battery latch to the RIGHT and the service cover will
lift up a little bit.
Continue removing the service cover with your fingers.
STEP 3.
Remove the service cover.
STEP 4.
Under the service cover youll get access to the following major laptop
components:
I will leave both memory modules and CMOS battery connected to the
motherboard. Its not necessary to remove them for the purpose of
my guide.
STEP 5.
Remove four screws securing the hard drive assembly.
STEP 6.
Unplug the hard drive cable from the motherboard.
STEP 7.
Lift up and remove the hard drive assembly.
STEP 8.
Remove one screw securing the DVD drive.
Pull the DVD drive to the right and remove it.
STEP 9.
In order to remove the keyboard youll have to use the hole located on
the left side from the wireless card.
STEP 10.
Insert a small screwdriver into the hole.
NOTE: youll be pushing on the bottom side of the keyboard so dont
use a sharp screwdriver. Im using a T6 torx screwdriver for that
because it has a flat end. A small slotted screwdriver should work too.
STEP 11.
Very genteelly push the screwdriver into the hole on the bottom of the
laptop.
The top side of the keyboard will lift up a little bit and you should be
able to insert your fingers under the keyboard.
STEP 12.
Remove the screwdriver and continue removing the keyboard with
your fingers.
STEP 13.
Before you remove the keyboard youll have to disconnect the
keyboard cable from the motherboard.
In the following two steps I explain how to unlock the connector.
STEP 14.
On this picture the keyboard connector shown in the LOCKED state.
Carefully lift up the left side of the cable retainer (brown piece) with
your fingernail.
The retainer will open up at a 90 degree angle.
STEP 15.
Now you can pull the keyboard cable from the connector.
STEP 16.
Remove the keyboard.
STEP 17.
Remove all screws from the bottom.
Dont forget three screws in the DVD drive bay.
STEP 18.
Remove screws securing the top cover assembly.
Disconnect three cables from the motherboard.
Left to right:
The power button board cable.
The touchpad cable.
The finger scanner device cable.
STEP 19.
Now you can start separating the top cover assembly from the bottom
cover.
Use a piece of plastic for that. Continue removing the top cover with
your fingers.
STEP 20.
The top cover/palmrest assembly removed.
STEP 21.
On the bottom side of the top cover you can access the following
components:
STEP 22.
Disconnect two antenna cables from the wireless card.
Remove two screws securing the wireless card.
STEP 23.
Pull the wireless card from the slot on the motherboard.
STEP 24.
Disconnect the DVD drive connector cable (left) and speaker cable
(right) from the motherboard.
STEP 25.
Disconnect the USB board cable (top) and power connector cable
(bottom) from the motherboard.
STEP 26.
Unplug the video cable (left) and webcam/microphone cable (right)
from the motherboard.
STEP 27.
Unplug the speaker cable from the motherboard.
STEP 28.
Remove four screws securing the silver cover.
STEP 29.
Remove the silver cover.
STEP 30.
Remove three screws securing the motherboard assembly to the
bottom case.
STEP 31.
Carefully remove the motherboard assembly from the base.
STEP 32.
The motherboard removed.
STEP 33.
The arrow shows where the fan cable connected to the motherboard.
If you wan to remove the fan assembly youll have to unplug this cable
first.
STEP 34.
On the other side of the motherboard you can access the remove the
cooling fan assembly.
You can search for the replacement cooling fan assembly using HP
spare part number.
In my laptop the cooling fan assembly had this part number: 641476001.
If you have a different HP part number just search for it.
