Course Description:
By the end of grade eight mathematics, students will understand various numerical
representations, including square roots, exponents, and scientific notation; use and apply
geometric properties of plane figures, including congruence and the Pythagorean Theorem;
use symbolic algebra to represent situations and solve problems, especially those that involve
linear relationships; solve linear equations and systems of linear equations; use equations,
tables, and graphs to analyze and interpret linear functions; develop the concept of
transformations and understand the effect that each type of transformation has on an object;
relate rigid motions to the concept of symmetry and use those motions to prove congruence or
similarity of two figures.
Materials Required:
Three-ring binder (at least 1)
Pencils & erasers
Loose-leaf notebook paper
Expo Markers
Spiral bound notebook (1 subject is large enough)
Attendance Policy & Make-Up Work:
Attendance and participation are extremely important. Every class you miss will
cause you to fall behind. Asking questions in class can help you clarify your
understanding. Make-up work is your responsibility and MUST be turned in within
three (3) days of your absence to receive full credit. Please note that make-up
work submitted for unexcused absences (including OSS) will not receive credit per
HCBOE policy. You are responsible for getting the assignments that you missed
due to any absence.
Late Work:
All late work (anything turned in after it has been collected in classeven if it is in
the same day) will be graded according to the school GRIP policy. Make-up work
turned in more than 3 days after an excused absence will receive a grade no
higher than 61. Any assignments not turned in by the end of EACH 9 week period
will receive a grade of 0.

Grading Policy:
-Tests - 50%
-Tests will be announced as far in advance as possible.
-A cumulative unit test will also be given at the end of each unit.
-Homework/Classwork/Quizzes 50%
-Quizzes may be pop quizzes or announced in advance.
* WORK MUST BE SHOWN FOR ALL ASSIGNED PROBLEMS (tests, quizzes, class
work, or homework) OR NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN.
Important Classroom Procedures:
1. Be prepared and ready to work. ~ Come to class on time. Put all materials
required for class out on your desk including homework!. Sit down. Begin the
warm-up.
2. Always be respectful. ~ All students are expected to be respectful of
themselves, peers, teacher, school property, personal property, others property,
and any ideas presented in class.
3. Follow directions. ~ Do what is asked the first time it is asked.
*Failure to follow classroom rules will result in disciplinary consequences. These
consequences include, but are not limited to, a verbal warning, BAR, contacting
parent/guardian, lunch detention, and referral to the administration.
******This syllabus can be changed at the discretion of the teacher and/or
administration.
