Graduation Ceremonies

Christchurch Town Hall, Friday 24 April, 1998

Introduction
Graduation seLVes to mark the transition from student or undergraduate status to
graduate or diplomate status which accords membership of the University. The
ceremony emphasises this in a number of different, but related, traditional ways,
reflecting both the long Western academic tradition and Maori tradition.
At the start of the ceremony, after the academic procession has entered the
auditorium, there will be a powhiri, which is a formal Maori welcome. This seLVes
to welcome the graduands and diploma recipients as fully-fledged members of the
University community.
While most of those receiving awards will have entered the auditorium before the
powhiri, the masters and doctoral graduands will represent all the group when they
enter in the traditional Maori manner during the powhiri. They will be called into the
auditorium by taua (older women) from the .Kai Tahu, the takata whenua (people of
the land) of Lincoln University. This call is called a karaka. The call will be answered
by a taua accompanying the graduands. The masters and doctoral graduands will
move slowly into the auditorium while the karaka takes place. The karaka will be
followed by a toia mai (a welcome haka).
A kaumatua of the Kai Tahu, will then give a speech of welcome. The Lincoln
University Maori Cultural Group will follow this with a waiata (song), Whakapapa
Pounamu. The words of the waiata are printed on page 6 of this progranune.
One of the Ph.D. graduands will present the pounamu. The pounamu symbolises
the education that those receiving awards have undertaken. As rough greenstone is
smoothed and polished, it gains in beauty. The pounamu, which will sit at the front
of the stage, opposite the mace, symbolises the way in which the graduates or
diplomates have been "polished" by their education at Lincoln.
During the ceremony, each graduand is called on to the stage by name. In the centre
of the stage, each is 'capped' by the Chancellor of the University to signify the
conferral of a degree. Having had the degree conferred, the new graduate is then
free to put on the trencher, which is the symbol of graduate status. The Academic
Registrar of the University hands the graduate a parchment which has been sealed
with the University seal and which certifies the conferral of the degree. The graduate
then returns to his or her seat in the auditorium, wearing the trencher.
After the degrees have been conferred and the diplomas presented, the Chancellor
calls all present to rise and sing one verse of the National Anthem, symbolising the
part played by the University in the nation's life. Following this, the audience is
asked to sing the medieval academic anthem Gaudeamus, the words of which are to
be found on page 7 of this progranune.
The esquire bedel then takes the mace and leads the procession, the graduates and
the diplomates from the auditorium.

Academic Dress
In corrunon with English universities, universities in New Zealand have a system
of academic dress which is worn by graduates and diplomates to indicate their
qualifications. This dress has evolved through the centmies from the everyday
clothing of students and teachers in the universities of the middle ages. The
gown was a medieval topcoat or cloak and the hood, a headcover.
The Lincoln University undergraduate diploma gown is black with green
facings.
The bachelors gown is of Norman origin and the masters gown is of Tudor
inspiration. The cap for all graduates, other than doctors, is a black trencher
with a tassel. Doctoral graduates wear a velvet bonnet.
Gowns for Lincoln degrees, except for doctorates, are black. The Lincoln Ph.D.
gown is black with blue facings, while for higher doctorates, the gowns are red
with facings of blue (Doctor of Science), gold (Doctor of Corrunerce) or green
(Doctor of Natural Resources).
At Lincoln University, the different hood colours denote the different degrees.

The colours for the hoods are:

46

Doctor of Natural Resources

honoris causa
DIANA ISAAC
Diana Isaac is celebrated for her work as a conservationist. She and her
late husband, Sir Neil Isaac, began work rehabilitating barren, quarried
land on McLeans Island in the 1950s, starting a planting progranune, and
creating a chain of ponds and lakes in the spent gravel pits. In the 70 ha
that the Isaacs restored, and which they named Peacock Springs, they
have created a unique wildlife reserve. Among the achievements of
this work has been to provide a habitat for an extensive variety of
endangered species. The Isaacs also created a highly successful
salmon farm. This conservation and land restoration project has
received a number of awards, both in New Zealand and overseas and
has attracted many distinguished visitors. In 1977, Neil and Diana Isaac
established the Isaac Wildlife Trust to ensure the continuity of their
conservation work.
Lady Isaac still chairs the directors of Isaac Construction Ltd, the fum
she and her husband founded in 1950, and which has become one of
the largest and most successful construction fums in the South Island.
She is an active and energetic contributor to a vast number of charities,
arts organisations, conservation and wildlife groups, and other
community organisations.

Doctors of Philosophy
PETER CRAIG ALMOND

Peter Almond's Ph.D. entitled, Soils and geomorphology of a lowland

rimuforest managedfor sustainable timber production, was
supervised by Dr J A Adams and Dr P J Tonkin of the Department of Soil
Science. The thesis defined and described the land forms and soils of
Saltwater in South Westland and their relationship to the indigenous
forest types found in this forest. It provides important resource
information which will assist the sustainable management of rimu. It also
provides a new interpretation of soil development in this environment.
Mr Almond had completed a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in
soil science at Massey University, and since 1990 has been a lecturer in
pedology in the Department of Soil Science at Lincoln University.

GREGORY MUIR ANDERSON

Gregory Anderson holds a Lincoln University Bachelor of Agricultural

Science with first class honours in animal science. Having completed his
honours degree, Mr Anderson took up a part-time assistant lectureship in
the Animal and Veterinary Sciences Group and began to work towards
his Ph.D. under Dr G K Barrell and Professor A R Sykes.
For his honours dissertation, Mr Anderson had investigated out-ofseason breeding in red deer. He extended his interest in this topic in his
Ph.D. studies where he investigated the role of thyroid hormones in the
control of seasonal reproduction in female red deer. He was able to
demonstrate that thyroid hormones switch off reproduction at the end
of the breeding season and that interruption of thyroid function would
enable deer to calve earlier than is usual on deer farms.
Mr Anderson is currently working at the University of West Virginia
where he is studying similar processes in sheep.

48

ALMUT ARNETH

Almut Arneth's thesis presents new and valuable infonnation relating

CO 2 uptake and water-use to soil water availability, radiation and vapour
pressure deficits. The results of the research contribute vital knowledge
to our evaluation of New Zealand's greenhouse gas budgets.
Ms Arneth's supervisors were Dr F M Kelliher and Dr G D Buchan of the
Department of Soil Science. The project also involved the participation
of Landcare Research. Ms Arneth was supported by an AGMARDT
scholarship and a Lincoln University doctoral scholarship.
Before coming to Lincoln University, Ms Arneth had studied at
Universitat Bayreuth, Gennany where she completed a Diplom-Biologin
in plant ecology with a thesis that explored the transpiration and canopy
conductance of a Siberian larch stand.

PANANE DASANAYAKE MUKIYANSELAGE GAMINI

DHARMATHILAKA BANDARA

Panane Bandara completed a Bachelor of Science with honours in

agriculture at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 1980, and
then worked as a research officer for the Sri Lanka Department of
Forest Conservation.
On arrival at Lincoln University, Mr Bandara initially undertook
masters studies before transferring to a Ph.D. project supervised by
Dr D J Mead and Dr S X Chang of the Department of Plant Science with
the collaboration of Dr D Whitehead of Landcare Research Ltd.
Mr Bandara's research focused on the effects of pasture competition

on the above ground growth and physiology of radiata pine trees. The
research found that forest managers can use competition to their
advantage to give better fonned, more lightly branched trees. His
research also uncovered the advantage in an agroforestry situation
of using physiologically aged radiata pine clones over seedlings.
Mr Bandara's studies at Lincoln University were supported by funding

from the Sri Lankan government's agricultural research project.

49

MAGDA VIEIRA BENAVIDES

Magda Benavides studied animal science at the Federal University

of Santa Maria, Brazil, taking out a masters degree with a thesis that
explored wool colouring.
She came to Lincoln University in 1993, supported by a Brazilian
government scholarship, to undertake Ph.D. studies, initially under the
supervision of Dr T C Reid of the Department of Wool Science, and more
recently Dr A P Maher. Associate supervision was provided by Dr M J
Young and Dr S Damak of the Animal and Veterinary Sciences Group.
The thesis examined selection criteria and DNA markers for clean wool
colour in Corriedale sheep. The research aimed to define strategies to
reduce the genetic component of non-scourable discolouration of wool.

NADINE ANGELA BERRY

Nadine Berry completed a Bachelor of Horticultural Science with first

class honours at Lincoln University in 1993. Her honours dissertation
had investigated the response of flow thrips to certain forms of stimuli.
Ms Berry's Ph.D. research considered the abundance, activity and
distribution of soil surface predators in farmland. The study was
supervised by Professor S D Wratten and R B Chapman ofthe
Department of Entomology and Animal Ecology and involved
participation and support from Heinz Wattie.

50

JACQUELINE BOWRING

Jacqueline Bowring's Ph.D. represented a milestone in the development

of landscape architectural education in New Zealand; this is the
first Ph.D. which has been awarded in this country in the field of
landscape architecture.
The work entitled, Institutionaiising the picturesque, is of both
theoretical and practical significance. Ms Bowring developed a
conceptual model to analyse the principles upon which contemporary
professional landscape architecture is based. She argues that New
Zealand landscape design is dominated by an unquestioned reproduction
of 18th century picturesque principles. In order to move forward, both
educators and practitioners need to be more critically aware of the
assumptions underlying their work, so that a new phase of design
thinking can emerge.
Before undertaking her Ph.D. Studies, Ms Bowring had completed a
Bachelor of Science with first class honours in geography at the
University of Canterbury, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Landscape
Architecture with distinction at Lincoln University. She had then worked
for a period as a professional landscape architect. During her period as a
landscape architect, she had won a number of awards for her work.

Ms Bowring is now a lecturer in landscape architecture at Lincoln University.

51

BLAIR DARRELL CASSIDY

Blair Cassidy came to Lincoln University in 1993 under a fellowship

funded by the Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand to engage
in Ph.D. research in computer modelling and simulation in the Centre
for Computing and Biometrics. Mr Cassidy's supervisors were
Dr G D Kulasiri and Professor A E McKinnon, with assistance from
Dr D Maddever of WRONZ. Mr Cassidy developed a computer model
to understand and predict the mechanical properties of woollen yam,
starting from the properties of individual fibres. His model captures
some of the most complex behaviour of the fibres in a yam and is the
most advanced model on yam mechanics today.
Mr Cassidy had previously completed a Bachelor of Science with

honours in mathematics at University of Canterbury.

Mr Cassidy is now employed by WRONZ as a research scientist, and

has been offered a postdoctoral fellowship in Japan.

HARRISON KWAME DAPAAH

Harrison Dapaah studied at Lincoln University under a scholarship

from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He had
previously taken a Bachelor of Science with honours in agriculture
from the University of Ghana and a Master of Science from the
University of Guelph in Canada. Before coming to Lincoln University,
Mr Dapaah had been working as a scientist for the Crop Research
lnstitute, Kumasi, Ghana.
The aim of Mr Dapaah's research work was to assess the suitability of
pinto beans as a new crop for Canterbury. He developed a computer
simulation model that will give farmers a good idea of the yields they
could expect if they grew the crop. This model also predicts when the
crop will mature and be ready for harvest. The project has led to
guidelines for growing the crop profitably, and a means of helping
farmers to decide whether or not the crop is suitable for their land.
Mr Dapaah is now working in a government research station in Ghana.

52

DAVID MURRAY FORSYTH

David Forsyth came to Lincoln University in 1993, having completed a

Bachelor of Science with first class honours in zoology at the University
of Canterbury. At Lincoln University, he studied for a Ph.D. under the
supervision of Dr G J Hickling and Dr A M Paterson of the Department
of Entomology and Animal Ecology.
Mr Forsyth's research was a study of the interactions of thar and
chamois in the eastern Southern Alps. His studies provided new
information on the behavioural ecology of both species and will assist
the Department of Conservation to manage the impacts of both species
on the high-altitude grasslands of the region. Mr Forsyth was awarded
a FRST post doctoral fellowship in 1997 and is now undertaking
biodiversity research at the University of British Columbia.

AMANDANANCYD~FREEMAN

Amanda Freeman took a Bachelor of Science at the University of

Auckland before transferring to Lincoln University in 1988 where
she completed a Master of Science in Resource Management. While
working in the natural sciences department at the Canterbury Museum,
Ms Freeman took out a Diploma in Museum Studies from Massey University.
In 1994, she returned to Lincoln University to study for a Ph.D. under
K J Wilson and Dr A M Paterson of the Department of Entomology and
Animal Ecology. Ms Freeman's thesis assessed the importance of
fisheries waste in the diet of Westland petrels, a species of seabird that
breeds only at Punakaiki. She found that, while fisheries waste is
important, the birds' exploitation of this uncertain food source is one of
opportunism and not dependence. In this study, Ms Freeman became the
first person to track burrow breeding seabirds at sea using satellite
telemetry. The transmitter package she designed is now the standard
package used internationally. Ms Freeman was the first person to adapt
molecular methods developed for fisheries forensic work to diet studies
on free ranging sea birds.

53

JOHN EVERARD HUNT

John Hunt's thesis is an attempt to understand the likely changes in

ultra violet B radiation that will be experienced in New Zealand, and
the resultant effects on our native flora. He has quantified what level
of change has happened already, how it is affected by our local
environment, and how native plants, as well as a commercial model
plant (cucumber) react to these changes.
The research should assist in determining whether changing UV patterns
have resulted, or are likely to result, in changes in the distribution of
some of our native ecosystems.
Before embarking on his doctoral studies, Mr Hunt had completed a
Bachelor of Science with honours at the University of Otago.
He conducted his Ph.D. as part of his ongoing progranune at Landcare
Research Ltd. The work was supervised by Dr D L McNeil of the
Department of Plant Science, and Dr G D Buchan of the Department
of Soil Science.

NGENANGAKJANGU
Ngenang Jangu came to Lincoln University in 1992 and completed a
Master of Agricultural Science degree in the Department of Farm and
Horticultural Management. In 1994, he began to study for a Ph.D. under
the supervision of Dr S K Martin of the Department of Farm and
Horticultural Management with associate supervision from Professor
P E Earl of the Department of Economics and Marketing, and Dr J R
Fairweather of the Agribusiness Economics Research Unit.
In his research, Ngenang Jangu identified four classifications of people
who do not adopt new technologies. He isolated the mental constructs
of each group with respect to a particular innovation, and compared
these constructs between groups and also with those of a group of
adopters. The research shows that non-adopters are not a homogeneous
group, as had often been previously assumed. The practical implication
of this research is that innovations need to be specifically targeted if the
uptake of a new technology is to be increased.
54

On completion of his Ph.D. studies, Ngenang Jangu returned to Sarawak. He

is currently the Officer-in-Charge of one of the nine divisions in the
Department of Agriculture. He is responsible for the Sarikei region which
has 250 staff, most of them field extension officers.

MARLENE VERA JASPERS

Marlene Jaspers undertook her Ph.D. studies while working as a senior

tutor at Lincoln University, initially in the Department of Microbiology and
more recently in the Department of Plant Science. She conducted her
research on the incidence, yield effects and transmission of a virus found in
New Zealand.
Mrs Jaspers' work was initially supervised by Dr R C Close and more
recently by Emeritus Professor A P Mulcock and Dr A M Stewart with the
assistance of Dr M N Pearson of the School of Biological SCiences,
University of Auckland.
Before embarking on her Ph.D., Mrs Jaspers had completed a Bachelor of
Science with first class honours in microbiology at the University of Canterbury.

JACK KEE HOCK LOO

Jack Kee Hock Loo took a Lincoln University Bachelor of Commerce and
Management in 1993 and then completed a Bachelor of Commerce with first
class honours and a Master of Commerce and Management with distinction
in management. His masters thesis examined the ethics of university
students in New Zealand and related ethical beliefs and practices to
ethnicity.
Having completed his masters degree, Mr Loo began research for his Ph.D.
under the supervision of Dr D A Sauers, Dr D L Dean, J G Kennedy and
C G Lamb of the Department of Economics and Marketing. The thesis
entitled, The relative contributions of transformational and transactional
leadership to team climate and innovation performance, examines forms
of leadership and assesses the ways in which leadership behaviour relates
to the innovation of groups.
Mr Loo has now taken up a management position with Ernst and Young

Consultant Pte Ltd. in Singapore.

55

EVERSON JAMES PETERS

Everson Peters was awarded a commonwealth scholarship to study in
the Department of Natural Resources Engineering at Lincoln University.
He had previously completed a Bachelor of Science in agricultural
engineering with first class honours at the University of West Indies, St
Augustine, and had then taken out a Master of Science at the University
of Guelph, Ontario. His masters degree thesis was entitled, Afinite
element modelfor drainage in a pucks tan clay.
At Lincoln University, Mr Peters was supervised by Dr D J Painter and Dr
S Samarasinghe. His research combined statistical forecasts of rainfall
and a comprehensive catchment model to provide better predictions of
inflows to the Waitaki River headquarters. This is a complex topic which
has considerable practical significance for the New Zealand electricity
generation industry.

GARY JOHN PICKERING

Gary Pickering's thesis was entitled, The production of reduced alcolwl

wine using glucose oxidase.
This research demonstrated the potential for using a new technology which
is not dependent on the use of expensive equipment for the production of

reduced alcohol wine. The chemical composition and sensory properties of

the wines produced by this technology were evaluated.
The research has made a significant contribution to the literature in the
understanding of the contribution of ethanol to the perception of
"fullness" (viscosity, density) of white wine.
Mr Pickering had completed a Bachelor of Science at Victoria University
of Wellington and then transferred to Lincoln University to begin a
masters degree specialising in viticulture wine science. He subsequently
enlarged his research and developed it to a Ph.D. project.

His research was supported by a Lincoln University doctoral scholarship

and an AGMARDT scholarship.
Mr Pickering has now taken up a lectureship in wine science in the School
of Wine and Food Sciences, Charles Sturt University, New South Wales.

SILKERUMPF

Having completed a Diplom at Universitat Heidelberg, Silke Rumpf

enrolled at Heidelberg for a Ph.D. As part of her doctoral studies,
she travelled to New Zealand under a Daimler Benz fellowship to
work in the Department of Entomology and Animal Ecology at
Lincoln University. Having become involved with the research of
the department, Miss Rumpf then abandoned her Heidelberg Ph.D.
and transferred to Lincoln University.
Ms Rumpfs Lincoln research was supervised by R B Chapman and
Dr S P M Womer of the Department of Entomology and Animal Ecology
with advice from W Haiga of the German Ministry for the Environment.
Her research studied the sub-lethal effects of pesticides on lace wings,
and explored the potential for integrated pest management.

HUNG-YJ SU

Su Hung-Yi came to Lincoln University to embark on his doctoral studies

having completed a Master of Science at Flinders University, Adelaide.
At Lincoln University, he studied the effects of hormones in hair and
fibre growth in mice and sheep. The research was supervised by
Professor D W Bullock and Dr S Damak of the Animal and Veterinary
Sciences Group, with the participation of Dr R Bickerstaffe and Dr J G H
Hickford in the latter stages of the study.

STEPHEN MARK THOMAS

Stephen Thomas completed a Master of Applied Science degree in the

Department of Soil Science at Lincoln University before being awarded
a Lincoln University Doctoral Scholarship to undertake Ph.D. research.
Before coming to New Zealand, Mr Thomas had served in the Royal
Navy and had completed a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in
geography at Plymouth Polytechnic, and a Master of Science at Cranfield
Institute of Technology. He had then worked as an irrigation specialist in
Kenya.
Mr Thomas' Ph.D. research at Lincoln University was supervised by

Dr J A Adams of the Department of Soil Science and co-supervised

by Dr D Whitehead of Landcare Research. The project involved a
collaboration between the New Zealand Forest Research Institute,
Landcare Research and Lincoln University. The thesis was entitled,
Seasonal below-ground carbon balancejor Pinus radiata trees growing
at ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations. The research measured
and modelled changes in root growth and soil carbon respiration arising
from increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

JUDY-ANN HELEN WARREN

Judy-Ann Warren completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with

first class honours in soil science in 1990, and then moved on to
doctoral studies.
Her doctoral research, supervised by Dr R G McLaren and Dr J A Adams
of the Department of Soil Science, examined the application of
municipal sewage sludge to an acid forest soil. This research makes a
valuable contribution to the understanding of some of the problems
associated with the disposal of sewage sludge to forest soils.
It also reveals areas of concern requiring further study and it highlights

problems with methodologies for examining forest sewage sludge systems.

Mrs Warren's studies were supported by an NZU doctoral scholarship.
