Unit 6: Shopping Around

[6.1] page 58, Exercise 3
1 Tom
I shop at Times Squareits a big shopping mall near where I live. I get almost everything there. I buy
food in the supermarket on the ground floor. On the first floor, there are lots of clothing stores and
boutiques and a big department store. At the top, there are music stores and computer stores and a
sports shop. There are movie theaters and bars and restaurants, too. You can spend the whole day
there. Its all very convenient. I love it!
2 Kirsten
I shop at local stores and the market downtown. The quality is good, especially the quality of fresh
food. I never go to the mall for food! I think the mall is stressful; I dont like itthere are lots of
people and noise, and no natural light. You can find everything you wantfood, clothes, things for the
houseat the local stores in town. The mall is only good if you want to buy a computer or jewelry, or
a camera or something like that. The problem is that the small stores are closing because everyone
goes to the mall its very sad for local businesses.

Unit 7: Going Places

[7.1] page 72, Exercise 2
1
We usually come here in the summer. We have picnics in a national park near here. I took this photo in
autumn. Its rainingreally raining! But it still looks very beautiful with all the autumn colors.
2
I love this place. We come here all year around. I took this photo in winter. Its cold. It isnt actually
snowing in the photo, but theres snow on the beach. I love it when its windy and cloudy like this and
there are no people on the beach.
3
This is a really busy ski resortin winter its full of people. I took this photo in the late spring. Theres
no snowand no skiers. Its sunny and warm with beautiful blue skies. We had a great day!
4
This is Red Square in the middle of summer. It isnt usually this quietits usually full of people. But
its the middle of the afternoon and its hot, really hot36 degrees! Nobody wants to be out in the
sun!
[7.2] page 73, Exercise 5
Lets take a look at the weather today in the South America region. Its very hot, dry and sunny in
Paraguay, with a maximum temperature of 35 degrees in the capital, Asuncin. Its a cool, wet day in
So Paulo. Its raining, with a maximum temperature of 15 degrees centigrade. Its warm and sunny in
Montevideo, with an expected high of 21 degrees. Meanwhile, its a windy day in Buenos Aires with
the high a cool 12 degrees there. As for tourist spots, its not a good day for the beach in south Brazil.
Its raining in Florianpolis with a temperature of only 17 degrees. For those of you who are visiting
the glaciers in El Calafate, its snowing and the temperature is barely above freezing its a very cold
1 degree centigrade at the moment. Its a very cold and icy day in this part of Patagonia. In the north of
Argentina, on the border with Brazil, its still warm. At Iguau Falls theres a pleasant high of 23
degrees, but its cloudy and humid.

restaurants, you know. There were people there from all over the world. Its a big resort.
W:
Yeah, it was lovely in the past, but that was before the real estate developers! I bet it was very
busy.
A:
Yeah, but the hotel was nice. There was a great pool and a view of the ocean from our room
and it was hot and sunny, so we were on the beach every day! What more can you ask for?

Disaster? What do you mean?
Well, first of all, we arrived there and within, like, ten minutes it started to rain and I mean
really rain!
Yeah, I remember. That was quite a storm on the weekend! So, what did you do?
Well, to start with, we waited in one of the beach cafs you know for the rain to stop or
something. We had coffee, we played a couple of card games but it didnt stop, it just
rained and rained and rained. So in the end we decided to go home.
Yeah?
Yeah well, we walked to the highway, to the bus stop, but just as we reached it there was
the bus, far away in the distance! We were too late we missed the bus and there wasnt
another one for two hours!
Oh, no!
Oh, yes! We didnt want to wait for the bus in the rain, so we walked
What? All the way home?
Yes, all the way home
Did you call a taxi?
No, we didnt. I wanted to but hey, it was too expensive we didnt have any money.
So what did you do when you finally got home?
We changed out of our wet clothes, took a hot shower and then we went out for pizza and a
movie!
A much better idea in the rain!

I went to work by subway for years because I lived and worked in Rio. Now I work in So Paulo and
Rio, so I go to work by plane. Theres an air shuttle every half an hour, and I can take any plane I like.
I dont travel like this every day, of course. When I go to So Paulo, I normally stay for three or four
nights, so its easy enough. The plane trip is only one hour. I hated flying before, but now its OK.
2 Erykah
Before, we walked to school, my friends and Ithree kilometers there and three back. We didnt have
a choice, because the roads were not in good condition or there werent any roads at all. Now the
roads are better, and theres a school bus that picks us up from the main square in the village. My life
changed overnight. It was hard going everywhere on foot
3 Carol
I went to work by car; I admit it. A single person in a big family car! I like driving, but its not very
good for the environment. I realized one day that this was terrible, so I decided to make some changes.
I talked to two friends who live near me, and we decided to share a taxi in the mornings. It costs more
or less the same, and we dont cause so much pollution. The problem is the taxi driver is not always
very friendly.
4 Alec
I always went to college by bus. It was pretty comfortable and there werent many delays. Then I
changed my mind about it because the city council introduced a new bike service. The idea is great,
but there were always problems. The bikes were sometimes broken, or there werent any when you
wanted one or there wasnt any space to leave them. And on rainy days! Well, it was more
expensive, but I preferred the bus!

T:
Yes, thats right.
G:
Well, first of all, you can go to the main square for breakfast. There are some great cafs on the
square. If its sunny, you can sit outside and watch the people go by. Then you can visit the
cathedral. That takes about an hour and a half. After that, you may want a restyou can take it
easy in the park near the castle and then maybe go up the castle tower! There is a great view
of the city from there. For lunch, I suggest you go to the old townthere are some great little
restaurants, and theyre not very expensive. The food is fantastic! And in the afternoon, why
not visit the town hall? Theres a photo exhibit on at the moment. Its really beautiful. And if
you still have some energy left in the evening, theres an open-air theater in the castle. You can

Unit 8: In the News

1 Djamal
I have a very busy life, so I dont have time to watch the news. The news is so bad most of the time,
anyway. But I like to follow the soccer news! Im a soccer fan, so when my teams playing and theres
a goal, I get a message on my phone. I got a message to say that we won the championship when I was
out of the country on vacation!
2 Jerome
It depends on the news. I get the newspaper for local news and to find out whats on, you know,
shows, plays, movies. I usually watch the world news on the television, when I come back from work
in the evenings. I dont like news about celebrities to me thats not news, its just gossip.
3 Amanda
I stopped buying the newspaper because I get information online. There are a lot of websites that give
you the world news as it happens. Al Jazeera is good for news from the Arab world, for example. The
newspaper is greatits relaxing to read the paper, but when you buy it well, its old news already.

Latest news on the hour every hour. Its nine oclock and here are tonights headlines for English
speakers in Buenos Aires. Fears about the new flu pandemic are increasing. Today, the authorities
decided to check all passengers entering the country through the main airports. Doctors suspect that
eleven soldiers in the Argentinian army have the virus. Hospitals are on alert in major cities such as
Cordoba, Mendoza and Rosario.
And now the latest from the Rock in the Park festival in Mar del Plata
Disaster at this years Rock in the Park as storms hit the coast of Mar del Plata. The countrys biggest
rock festival is in danger. Last night it rained nonstop and organizers canceled Fridays concerts. They
hope to make an announcement later today about tonights show with big name bands Depeche Mode

We just didnt believe it! Was that a man on the RBS tower? Was it possible? More and more people
stopped to watch. Then we saw a helicopter. It flew over the tower. We thought it was the police, but
they started filming the man on the tower. Later I found out it was a TV station. We watched him as he
climbed higher and higher. Finally he got to the top. It was fantastic; we all cheered! When he came
back down, the police were there. First they asked for his ID, then they arrested him and took him
away in a police car. I think, in the end, they fined him and let him go.

Alain Robert is an incredible manand an incredible climber. He started climbing as a young boy, and
he climbed his first building at the age of 12. One day he got home, looked in his pockets, but he
didnt have his door key. He didnt want to wait for someone to come home, so he decided to climb up
the outside of the buildingall the way to the eighth floor. This was the beginning of a great passion.
As a young man he had two serious accidents. After the second accident, doctors said that his climbing
career was over. But Alain didnt listen to them. He wanted to climb. At first he climbed mountains,
and then he started to climb towers and famous buildings.
First, he climbed the Eiffel Tower in Paris and then the Opera House in Sydney. It is usually
impossible to get permission to climb these buildings, so Alain usually starts his climbs in the early
hours of the morning, using only his hands and some climbing shoes. And his climbs often end in his

arrest! Chinese authorities arrested him in 2007; Brazilian police arrested him in Sao Paulo in 2008;
and British police arrested and fined him when he climbed the Lloyds building in London in 2009.
And so the story continues
When reporters ask him why he does it, he says what all great climbers say: Because I can. At first
he climbed for fun. Then he climbed to protestto protest against his arrestshe really doesnt like
authority!and later to protest about climate change. Some of his climbs were also for money. In
2003 he climbed the Abu Dhabi Bank building to celebrate its opening. Then he climbed the Lloyds
building in London in a Spider-Man costume to promote the Spider-Man movie. The media started to
call him the Human Spider or the French Spider-Man.

Unit 9: Hungry Planet

[9.1] page 94, Exercise 2
P = Phil J = Jenny
P:
Hello and welcome back to the breakfast show. Its time for our daily Talking Food slot. Jenny
is with us today to talk about what else but breakfasts! Hi, Jenny.
J:
Hi, Phil. Good morning. Let me start with a question. What did you have for breakfast today?
P:
Ehm, coffee, a donut
J:
Did you buy them on the way to work?
P:
Yes, I did.
J:
Like thousands of other people on their way to work this morning, all over the world! But its
not the only choice. In Turkey, for example, breakfast consists of bread, cheese and olives, with
a cup of tea and maybe some tomatoes and cucumber, or a boiled egg. Very healthy. Eggs, of
course, are popular all over the world. Theyre quick, cheap and easyand a very good way to
start the day. In Mexico they eat fried eggs and tortilla with tomato salsa. Delicious! A
traditional Brazilian breakfast consists of different breads with fresh fruitpapaya, pineapple
or melon, for example. Fruit is also very popular in Scandinaviain Sweden or Norway
people often have fruit with cerealusually muesli served with yogurt. Another very healthy
choice! In Thailand people start the day with soupsoup with rice and some meat or fish. You
can buy the soup on the street on your way to workjust like your donut and coffee, but its
much better for you!
P:
OK, Im convinced! Tomorrow Im going to try something a little more exciting. Thanks,
Jenny. And now onto our next slot
[9.2] page 98, Exercise 3
Its sad but true. Every year we throw away one third of the food we buy. Thats 6.7 million tons of
food in the UK. Fruit and vegetables are 40 percent of this. The top five fruit and vegetables that go to
the garbage are apples, potatoes, bananas, tomatoes and oranges. But why do we waste so much food?
The reason is simple. We buy too much food, we dont use it all and then we throw it away. For
example, lots of people forget to put food in the refrigerator in the summer. Obviously, if you put fresh
fruit and vegetables in the refrigerator, they stay fresh longer and you dont need to throw them out.

I studied French at school. I was pretty goodI passed all my exams. But I cant really speak it very
well. We studied a lot of grammar and we did a lot of translating. Some of it was interesting, but we
didnt do a lot of speaking or listening. I find the language really difficult to understand, and my
French pronunciation is awful! But I can communicate in simple situations, you know, in a store, at a
restaurant, that kind of thing.
I started studying Portuguese last year. I joined a class at a local language school. There were only six
students in the class. It was greatwe got lots of attention from the teacher. We did a lot of speaking
from the very beginning, and we played a lot of language games. I really liked that. What I liked most
was when I took my first book home to read. It was very simple. A short elementary readerthats a
book written especially for language learners. I read it in one night. Now I read books and comics,
websites and blogs by other people studying Portuguese. Reading really helps me learn.

H = Host FH = Frederic Hedstrom
H:
Welcome to Buzzword, the program that looks at new words, what they mean and how we use
them. In the studio today we have Frederic Hedstrom, who is going to talk about flash mobs.
What does that mean exactly, Frederic?
FH: Well, a mob is a large group of people, right? And flash suggests speed, something that
happens suddenly, something that happens very quickly. Flash mobs are events where big
crowds of people meet in a public place and do something together for maybe five minutes
and then thats it.
H:
Whats the connection with technology then?
FH: Well, people know whats happening, and where and when to meet, because they get a text
message on their cell phone or perhaps an e-mail. This means that these events happen very
quickly, theres no need to plan in advance. People call, text or send an e-mail, and the flash
mob takes place only a few hours or minutes later.
H:
Yes, I think thats the exciting part of it, theyre very spontaneous
FH: Absolutely.
H:
What kind of flash mobs do people organize?
FH: Well, a lot of them are just for fun. There is a very popular oneThe Pillow Fight. It takes
place all over the world. People get together and fight each other with pillows. Thats it. Its
silly but great fun!
H:
How many are we talking about here?
FH: More than 5,000 in the New York pillow fight. Thats the biggest flash mob ever, bigger than
Londons silent disco.
H:
Silent disco? Whats that?
FH: A silent discoor raveis when a lot of people meet in a public place, listen to music on their
iPods and dance. It looks really strange. Everybodys dancing, but you cant hear any music!
Thats why its called a silent discoor rave!
H:
It all seems very silly. Arent there any serious flash mobs?
FH: Well, one famous event happened in 2009. Dani Jarque, a soccer player and captain of the
Espanyol soccer club in Barcelona, died suddenly at the age of 26. Fans of the club organized a
meeting to pay their respects to him. Thousands of people phoned or sent text messages, like a
chain and they all met in the same place to light candles and leave flowers.
H:
Where did they meet?
FH: At gate 21 of Espanyols stadium.
H:
Why was that?
FH: Because Jarques shirt number was always 21.
H:
I see Finally, whats your favorite flash mob, Frederic?
FH: Oh something silly! There was a No Pants Day in New York. A lot of people got on the subway
without their pants it was very funny and it was a cold day, too!

Well, the hours are regular. I work from 8:30 to 5, Monday to Friday. And the pay is pretty
good. All in all, its not a bad job.
3
I = interviewer K = Krista
I:
Do you like your job?
K:
Well, I know Im really lucky to have a jobthere are lots of people out of work right now.
But to be honest, I really hate it!
I:
Why do you hate it?
K:
Its boring its always the same. We just sit and do the same thing all day long. Its hard
work, too, and Im really tired at the end of the day. The only good thing is the lunch break!
And the people I work with. Theyre great fun!
[11.2] page 119, Exercise 2
A new survey out today says that the five happiest professions are those of hairdressers, chefs, priests,
plumbers and mechanics. And the five unhappiest are those of office workers, architects, secretaries,
real estate agents and bankers. It appears that hairdressers, chefs, priests, plumbers and mechanics
have one important thing in common: they make people feel goodor help them solve an important
problemquickly! Which might explain why architects are less happybecause it takes a long time
to see the results of their work. It can take many years to finish a building, but giving a haircut or
preparing a bowl of pasta takes just a few minutes!

Unit 12: Listmania!

[12.1] page 127, Exercise 6
Yesterday was a really stressful day. I have so much to do, really. I have four children so thats a big
responsibility its a daily responsibility. The problem is that I work from home. I have a great job
Im a journalist, and I make a living writing articles. So I have the family and my work, and I need to
balance the two! Thats not always easy! Well, yesterday they went to school, as usual, and after that I
did the housework. Then I worked on my articles for the rest of the morning. I had lunch at two. Then
I did some work on the computer, and I made some phone calls. But by then it was six oclock and the
kids were home again. It was time to make dinner and prepare them for bed. I looked at my watch it
was nine oclock! I didnt take a shower or rest the whole dayI didnt have time! I need to organize
my time better!
[12.2] page 128, Exercise 2
I always make a list before going away on vacation. I write down all the things I need to take
passport, money, tickets, all the clothes Ill need. If I dont make a list, I always forget something
important!
[12.3] page 129, Exercise 1
H = Helen R = Renata S = Stephen
H:
I hate these lists.
R:
Why? I think theyre interesting
H:
Come on, I mean, life isnt a list its how you live from day to day thats importantwho
you are, not the number of things you do. This is just a list of expensive vacation
experiences just another thing to consume.
R:
Consume? What do you mean?
H:
Well, its a list of things to spend money onthings you can buy, isnt it? You know, an exotic
vacation or skydiving. All these before you die lists say you havent had a good lifea full
lifeif you dont do all these exoticand expensive!things. And I think thats wrong.
S:
Helen has a point and this list is a little stupid. I mean, drive a Formula One car! Thats just
for kids! Some people think that life is just about driving fast cars, obviously
H:
I know, thats exactly what I mean. But then, looking again, there are some good things on the
list, too. Id love to go whale-watching, for example.
S:
Me, too!
R:
I did that in Argentina a few years ago. It was fantastic.
S:
And Ive been to Antarctica.
R:
Seriously?
S:
Yeah, I went last summer. It was amazing. And Id love to see the Northern Lights. Helen,
youve lived in Finland, havent you? Have you ever seen the Northern Lights?
H:
No, I havent. We went up to the north once, but we didnt see the lights. Ive seen the
midnight sun, though but then, that isnt on the list, is it? So, I suppose it doesnt count!
[12.4] page 131, Exercise 1

Ive never been to Scandinavia. Ive always wanted to go there, so Copenhagen could be interesting to
visit, sure. But everybody tells me its very expensive there though that obviously doesnt worry the
magazine maybe the journalists have a lot of money! It looks beautiful in the photo, so clean, and

the air so fresh, not like where I live. I went to Munich last summer I wonder if its similar. I dont
know if the cultural life in Copenhagen is so good, but I like the fact that the people are liberal there
they have open minds. So, yes, I would like to go one day!
2 Maria
Well, I dont know why its this magazines number one city. I went to Zurich a few years ago, but I
didnt like it much. I didnt have a very good time there. Its a very beautiful place and everything runs
on time, like the transportation, as they say. But its not a very friendly place maybe its just too
efficient. I like cities that have more life, more chaos for me, the atmosphere on the street is the
most important thing, and the cultural life. I dont think its so great in Zurich. Ive been to other cities
in Europe that I like more Berlin, for example.
[12.5] page 131, Exercise 1

Ive lived in many different countries.

[12.6] page 132, Exercise1
This was last year in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. What are these people doing? Theyre competing in the
most famous triathlon event there isthe Ironman World Championshipthe original and best
Ironman event in the world. What is a triathlon? Well, its a combination of swimming, cycling and
running that started in the 1970s in California. The first long-distance triathlon took place here in
Hawaii in 1978. Now Ironman events take place all over the world, but this was the first one and is
still the most important. What do the contestants have to do? They need to swim about 3.8 km, then
cycle for about 180 km and finally run a marathonthats 26 miles or 42 km. But thats not all! They
have to do all of that on the same day! One final thing: despite the name of the race, the contest is of
course open to Ironwomen as well!
[12.7] page 132, Exercise 4
I = Interviewer K = Klaus
I:
Well, Klaus, weve just heard the news. Youre going to represent Munich at this years
Ironman World Championship in Hawaii!
K:
I cant really believe it, to tell you the truth! Im really very excited.
I:
How did you get the place?
K:
I was very lucky! Its a lotterythats the only way they can limit the number of people in the
race. To be in the lottery, you need to do a half Ironman event somewhere in the world, thats
all.
I:
So, some people think you need to be crazy to do this. Is that right?
K:
Well, maybe, yesIm sure it helps! I started with normal triathlons, like a lot of people, and I
realized that I was really good. I began as a swimmer, reallyI swam in competitions when I
was a kid. Then some friends told me about triathlons. I did my first one here in Munich five
years ago.
I:
Which is your favorite of the three sports?
K:
I think its swimming; thats my best sport. Cycling is the worst one; I sometimes get very
tired!
I:
So, what are your plans now, Klaus? How are you going to prepare for this event?

K:

Good question! The training is very difficult. For the next six months, Im going to follow a
very strict program. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I swim about 3 km in my local pool. On
Fridays I swim another 2.5 km, and I try and swim in open sea if I can, but thats not easy here
in Munich. On Wednesdays, I usually go for a short run, around 10 to 12 km. On Saturdays, I
usually do a long bike ride, which right now is about 120 km! Then on Sundays, I run a longer
distance, about 20 km but all those distances will start to increase. Mondays are usually my
day off!
What about the climate in Hawaii?
Thats a problem. Here in Munich, its very cold, but in Hawaii the weather will be hotand it
can be windy, too. Right now, Im running with lots of clothes on to prepare myself for the
heat.
What about the rules?
There are a lot! You cant receive help from anyone in the race, except the officials, who can
give you food and drink. Also, theres a new rule for the swimming you cant wear
swimsuits made from certain material because they give you an advantagethey help you
swim faster.
Well, thanks, Klaus, for telling us about the preparations for the race. Good luck and
congratulations!
Congratulations? Lets hope I finish first!
