another party fission, with Harrington leading a left-liberal breakaway faction, the Democratic
Socialist Organizing Committee (which in 1982 became the Democratic Socialists of America).
The rest of the party also split, with a tiny pacifist fraction retaining rights to the old Socialist
Party name, while a well-connected strata of neoconservatives, calling themselves Social
Democrats USA, were providing intellectual fire-power for the Reaganite assault on Cold War
dtente, postNew Deal liberalism, and affirmative action policies to aid racial minorities.
