iPad Program

As leaders in academic excellence, Cherry Drive Elementary recognizes students of this generation learn and
engage in education differently than students in the past. Research has demonstrated students learn best
when they are actively involved in their education. Technology engages students in all academic levels. As a
1:1 iPad school, we are committed to using this academic tool to help create lifelong learns and productive
21st century citizens.

To maximize the effectiveness of this educational tool, great care must be taken by the entire Cherry Drive
community, including students, staff and parents. Adhering to the following guidelines and procedures is
necessary for the success of this program.

How it works

Cherry Drive will issue an iPad to all students who wish to participate. In order to participate, parents must:
Sign and return the District Technology and the Internet Responsible Use Agreement (included in the
enrollment packet at the beginning of the year).
Sign and return the iPad Take-Home Preference Form.
Sign and return the iPad Custody and Use Agreement.
Pay the $60 iPad Rental fee (fee will be waived upon request for students eligible for free or reduced
price lunch).

iPad rental fee

The fee for the iPad program at Cherry Drive for the 2016-2017 school year is $60. This fee will be
assessed to your account in October. You will be sent a bill and will have the option to either pay online
using payforit.net or write the school a check. Parents of children eligible for free or reduced price
meals will have the fee waived upon request.

Using your iPad at school

iPads are intended for use at school each day. The students will use the iPad as an instructional tool as
needed during the day.
Students are required to bring their iPad to school each day with a fully-charged battery.
iPads are to be used for educational purposes in accordance with the iPad agreement. Limited
personal use is permitted within the guidelines set by the school.
While at school, the District provides content filtering for iPads and other devices connected to the
Districts Wi-Fi network. iPads may be monitored by teachers, administrators or other District staff
members.
Students will not be given a loaner iPad if they leave their iPad at home. Students who do leave their
iPad at home will be required to complete assignments by using alternative means as determined by
the teacher.

All apps that are downloaded, whether by the teacher or parent (using family apple ID) cannot exceed
the 4+ rating. This rating ensures that there is no objectionable material on that app. It is not a rating
for the educational developmental level. The next rating is 9+.

Table 7-4 Apple rating chart

Rating

Definition

4+

Apps in this category contain no objectionable material.

Students may not change the background wallpaper with various themes or personal photos. The
general wallpaper background needs to remain on the iPad so that the teacher can easily monitor the
iPads.

Using your iPad at home

With parent permission, students are allowed to add wireless networks to their iPad.
The District does not provide Internet access for home use. Comcast offers low cost Internet service to
eligible families. Please contact our office for more information.
The iPads are set up to use the Districts content filter even when accessing the Internet through nonDistrict Wi-Fi, but parents are encouraged to monitor all iPad use when away from school.

Caring for the iPad

The iPad must be kept in the district-provided Griffin case. Approval for cases other than the districtprovided case must be given by building administration.
Maintenance on the iPad will be performed by the Districts technology support team. However,
students are encouraged to perform simple cleaning procedures as outlined below.
o Clean the screen with a soft, dry, anti-static or micro-fiber cloth. Do not use any type of liquid
or water to the clean the screen of the iPad.
o Wash hands frequently when using the iPad to avoid build up on the glass touch pad.
The iPad screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive
to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.
o Do not lean on the top of the iPad when the case is closed.
o Do not place anything near the iPad that could put pressure on the screen.
o Do not place anything in the carrying case/backpack that will press against the cover.
o Do not bump the iPad against walls, car doors, floors, etc. as it will eventually break the
screen.
o Only a stylus designed for an iPad may be used.
Do not do anything to the iPad that will permanently alter it in any way.
Never leave your iPad in a vehicle.
iPads should not be exposed to extreme temperatures (i.e.: left in a car, sun exposure).
Cords and cables must be inserted carefully into the iPad to prevent damage.

Do not write or draw on the iPad.

Do not attach any stickers to the iPad.
Do not delete any profiles, folders, files or apps that you did not create or that you do not recognize.
Deletion of files could result in iPad failure and may interfere with your ability to complete class work.
Taking this action may result in your iPad having to be re-imaged.

Damage or loss of the iPad

Never leave your iPad unsecured. Each iPad has several identifying labels (i.e. District identification
label, serial number). Under no circumstance may you modify, remove or destroy these labels.
All willful or accidental damage to the iPad is subject to the following charges:
- $300.00 for full replacement of the iPad.
- $20.00 for a charge cord.
- $20.00 for a charging cube.

If a students iPad is lost or believed to be lost or stolen, Cherry Drive staff should be alerted as soon as
possible and families should immediately attempt to locate the iPad using Find my iPad
(http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/find-my-iphone.html).
If the iPad has been stolen, parents should contact police immediately to file a theft report. Cherry
Drive may follow up with the police department as well.

iPad take-home option

Parents may choose whether or not their child is allowed to bring an iPad home.

Parents need to set restrictions on the iPad for safe use at home.

The iPad will be protected by the districts content filter during all school hours.
