It's more than 3 hrs. by JR from Osaka to Matsumoto, and then you have to take another 1.5 hr. bus/rail to get to Ka

The only worry I have for you is that you're going there from Osaka without a reservation for your jour
We stayed in Matsumoto the night before we went and made the reservation beforehand. Try to find o
reservation from Osaka.

We took the morning direct bus which took 100 min. There is a slightly shorter journey if you dont min
min. train from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima followed by a 50 mn. bus to Kamikochi. On your return
you have to make the transfer in Shin-Shimashima. Even with a return ticket, you should get a boardin
beforehand for your designated bus departure to ensure a seat. That way you dont have to queue up
advised to arrive 10 min. before the bus departs.

The ticket office in Matsumoto is in the basement supermarket of a dept. store across the street to the
depot is just above street from the ticket office. The private train for Shin-Shimashima shares a platfor

Day 2 - Afternoon Tour of Shirakawa-go:

Shirakawa-go is famous for it's thatch-roofed Gassho-style homes which have been pretected from the
preserving a unique traditional way of life. This historic village is registered as world cultural heritage
the Ogimachi Joseki Observatory, offering a magnificent view of the entire village. Stroll thru the histo
this very day and step inside the Wada house for a glimpse into the past. Some of the homes are over
national treasure which holds a special place in the heart of Japan. After a full day of culture return to
the express train back to Tokyo.

Day 2 - Morning Tour of Takayama:

Your local guide will walk you thru the historic 16th century castle town. Encounter the true Japanese
sites such the old private houses, the Miyagawa morning market, the Higashiyama Temples, the Hida
former samurai house boasting interesting secret passageways and an old well in the courtyard. Enjoy
crackers at the folk craft museum, and taste traditional sake from the local sake brewery. After lunch t
