Malaysia:
1.

Shafa'atussara Silahudin

Shafa'atussara Silahudin (Syafa), a native of Muar, Johor, was born on 24 May 1983. Syafa began her
active involvement in music at the age of 18 when she participated in the Traditional Song
Competition at the district level in Muar and then at the Johor state level. She subsequently pursued
her Bachelor's degree studies at the University of Malaya. She has appeared in many singing contests,
both at the university and national levels. She has recorded over 50 songs with Pak Ngah Production
since 2008 and was involved in production of local television programmes, and traditional song
performances in Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, China, and the Netherlands. Syafa is currently
completing her Ph.D dissertation at Leiden University in the field of Ethnomusicology.

Zafirah Bahiah Hassan

Zafirah Bahiah binti Hassan was born in Batu Pahat, Johor. An educator with a Bachelor of Teaching
from the Institute of Teacher Education, Malay Language Campus (IPGKBM) in Kuala Lumpur, she
started her career as a teacher in 2014. She currently teaches at the Bukit Mutiara National School in
Johor Bahru, Johor. Her interest in Malay literature started in 2008 in IPGKBM. She frequently
recites the syair and gurindam (couplets) at the IPG level. Since becoming the 2012 National
Gurindam Champion, she has been actively involved in syair, nazam and gurindam performances with
the Pahang State Theatre Association under the guidance of its Director, Roslan Madun. She has also
participated in gurindam recitals in Brunei Darussalam during the Malay Heritage Syair Tour. She has
collaborated with the Institute of Language and Literature in Kuala Lumpur as a syair and gurindam
reciter in several events.

Nur Amelyana Noor Kamaruzaman

Nur Amelyana binti Noor Kamaruzaman, a native of Klang, Selangor, was born on 12 December
1990. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Teachers' Training Institute, Malay Language
Campus in Kuala Lumpur, majoring in Malay Language and Malay Literature and Art. She began to
venture in the field of traditional Malay poetry presentation by participating in the Heritage Poetry
Festival organised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in 2012, and was the runner-up in Nazam category.
The success has spurred her to explore further the field of Malay traditional poetry delivery.

Rusmawani Ishak

She began dabbling in syair poetry during her school days and took a serious interest when she was
working as a facilitator for the National Service Arts and Culture Appreciation Programme from 2007
until 2015. She has received numerous invitations to conduct presentations organised by the Institute
of Language and Literature (DBP), Negeri Sembilan Library as well as a number of programmes
organised by schools in the states of Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. She was runner-up in both the
National Independence Poetry Declamation Competition in 2009 and the Puisi Competition organised
by DBP in 2012 under the syair category. Rusmawani is also active in theatre and is a committee
member of the Negeri Sembilan Artist Association as well as an instructor with the National Cultural
Arts Theatre.

Nur Ameera Nabila Azmi

Nur Ameera Nabila binti Azmi was born on 28 June 1992 and grew up in Kedah Darul Aman. She is
currently pursuing the Bachelor of Music Education at the Teacher Education Institute in Ipoh. She
participated in the Dondang Sayang Competition in 2013 and was a finalist in the Gurindam
Competition in 2014, both at institute level. During the Warisan Moraza Panglima Segenta Alam
Bangsawan Theatre, which was held at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, she recited gurindam poetry. She
also participated in the Poetic Artist Programme as a gurindam poetry reciter at the National
University of Malaysia in collaboration with Utusan Malaysia.

Hazwan Haziq Rosebi @ Haziq AF

Hazwan Haziq bin Rosebi, 28, hails from Kluang, Johor. He is currently pursuing his studies in the
field of Creative Industries at Universiti Utara Malaysia. He began singing at the age of 11 when he
joined the school ghazal band and participated in a number of traditional song competitions. He joined
the reality show "Akademi Fantasia" in 2006 and was placed 4th. His preference is traditional Malay
rhythms, ghazal, and style. His idol is the late Ahmad Jais. He once held a traditional concert at Istana
Budaya and had several performances with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Kuala
Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). Aside from singing, he is also active in sports and was a
national cricket player from 2001 to 2006.

Indonesia:
1. Musliha Wardana

(Tanjung Pinang, Kepulauan Riau)

Musliha binti Wardana was born on 27 April 1995 to Wardana bin Marwi and Zuraida binti Umar.
She pursued her studies up until Semester 7 at the Raja Ali Haji Maritime University at Tanjung
Pinang. From the tender age of 10, Musliha started to take interest in singing, dancing, acting and so
forth, which further deepened her love for the arts and culture.

3. Juspebgo Setiawan

(Medan, Sumatera Utara)

(Pekanbaru, Riau, Sumatera)

JUSPEBGO SETIAWAN was born in Pekanbaru, Riau. He holds a Diploma from the Academy of
Malay Arts in Riau (majoring in vocalisation) (2008-2011). He is currently continuing his education
at the Riau Islamic University (majoring in music) and writing a thesis on lullabies mothers sing to
their children at bedtime. Pebgo is very much involved in the world of singing, especially in syair
recital. In 2015, he won first place in the syair recital competition at the Pan-Sumatra Language
Centre in Jambi province. Apart from syair recitals, Pebgo diversified into Malay songs, for which he
won numerous Malay song festival awards in Riau.

4. Nelly Alie

(Kota Dumai, Sumatera)

A native of Dumai, Nelly Alie binti M. Ali Ucah was born on 10 July 1972. She obtained her
senior high school diploma in 1990 from the Bukit Batu Sei Pakning Secondary School.
Since 1989, she has participated in various competitions both locally and abroad, including
Syair, Pantun, Qasidah Rebana and Malay song competitions, which inspired her to compose
Malay songs, resulting in 3 compilation albums and a Dumai Syair Poetry album comprising
10 songs. She is currently on the Board of Judges of numerous competitions. She received
Certificates of Participation for her involvement in the Malay Pantun Festival, Berbalas
Pantun Competition, and the Irama Dondang Sayang and Joget Serampang Laut Competition
in Melaka in which she was placed third.

Brunei: Noor Hawadah Ramle


Aged 30, she holds a Bachelor of Arts (2008-2012) and a Master's degree in Malay Literature (20122013). She is currently Senior Producer at the Radio Service Division of the Department of Radio
Television Brunei. She became active in syair poetry and delivery when she was 13. She is often
invited to read Bruneian syair at cultural and literary events as well as formal and state functions, and
has represented Brunei in syair competitions in Malaysia and Indonesia. She has won several national
syair competitions, including the National Inter-Secondary School and Inter-College Syair
Competition, the Inter-Faculty Syair Competition organised by the University of Brunei Darussalam,
and Syair Competition on the occasion of the birthday of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan
Negara of Brunei Darussalam. She was appointed as a workshop instructor and judge during the
National Inter-Secondary School and Inter-College Syair Competition in 2015.

Singapura: Hanafi Idrus


Afi Hanafi is a Malay cultural activist from Singapore. His penchant for watching classical Malay
films since childhood has shaped his interest in the Malay cultural arts. The 31-year-old has been
active in several cultural groups from the various community centres around Singapore since his early
teens. He is the founder and director of the Sri Temasek Orchestra, which focuses on traditional
Malay songs in Singapore. Apart from singing with the orchestra and at corporate events, Afi Hanafi
also conducts music and handicraft workshops in schools around Singapore. Recently, he was
appointed as Chairman of the Malay Activity Executive Committee of the Tampines West
Community Club.

Selatan Thailand: Suraya Masenbangi (Yala)


Suraya Masengbangi was born in Bachak, Bannangstar, Yala, Thailand. She studied at the Alawiah
Whitaya Secondary School in Yala, and is currently pursuing her Bachelor's degree in Malay
Language at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Fatoni University. She was engaged as a syair
reciter at the Malay language special camps organised by the Distance Learning Centre of Kapho
District, Pattani Province in 2013 and 2015. She frequently engages kindergarten children with pantun
to foster their love for the nation's heritage. She also frequently gives sajak and anasid poetry recitals
during village festivities such as the celebration to welcome the start of the fasting month in 2016
organised by the Youth Association of Kampung Tanjung Nangka in the Bannang Star District of
Yala Province. She writes pantun and syair to be used as a teaching aid in the teaching of the Malay
language at the Nurul Yakin Kindergarten in Tanjung Nangka.
