NOP.nz is a cultural project, betwenn

France and New Zeland, based on « New
Orchestra Practices ».

Concept is to bring together people

from different backgrounds to play at one’s
a mixed media orchestra. Artworks will be
from France and New Zealand. Purpose is
to increase exchanges and discovers in-
between the two cultures.

Currently NOP.nz’s preparation takes

place in France. Execution will be held
from february 2011 in New Zealand.

I will go along with the New Zelander

artists in order to help them to create for
the NOP.nz orchestra. I will conduct the
orchestra. I will document the work done
in New Zealand in order to distribute the
maximum of info that would bring atten-
tion to the NOP project.

Sound and Visual-Art Creation
Establishing the NOP.nz project creates a thinking process
concerning our surroundings in order to boost the field of art.
Through their research artists are offering brand new propositions
to comprehend the world we are living in and its cultural context.
Art is a beautiful way to bring diverse cultures and viewpoints
face-to-face.
Foremost I support projects that include sounds or images. I have
even received an education in relation to both of theses mediums.
I had a classical schooling in music mixed with a strong focus on
it as a spatial material. To conclude I did courses in Fine Arts and
Visual Arts (more details in my CV). These experiences make me
aware of the many resources, the potential and the wealth that
exists between Sound and the Visual-Arts. It is possible to work
both mediums separately, like the artist Carsten Nicolaï; to create
echoes among the two, like the artists Kandinsky or Klee; or to
interweave sounds and images, like in Ryoji Ikeda’s work.
The arrival of video introduced a clearness regarding the
relationship linking sound and image. The New Technologies (NTIC)
made the connections simpler. However many fields have not
been explored yet. The Meta-Mallette (see p.8) offers, thanks to
the NTIC, an easy access to many opportunities and interactions
relating to sound and image.
NOP.nz is primarily meant for music composers and visual artists
who wish to invest theses questions. Three call-outs will be made to
New Zealand artists in order to open fresh avenues in contemporary
sound and image creation. The call-outs will be about musical
pieces coming from the French repertoire.
Play together
Play is the central part of the NOP.nz project; it is an important part
of amateur practice.
The NOP Project Orchestra will be based on three majors axes:
- Practice as an art vector. Gestures give the body intellectual
impulses. “Doing” in music entails being able to seize the
composer’s intent in order to give your own interpretation. Creating
is demanding but everyone could march to a different drummer
linked by one common gesture.
- Natural curiosity of the amateur as an opportunity to open
new perspectives. The orchestra will bring people together with
no discrimination of age or skill-level. People will be connected by
the one collective urge to be part of an innovative art project. A
Diversity of individuals will add advantages to the intercultural side
of the scheme.
- Game as a space of freedom. The Orchestra uses a
gaming device that looks like a videogame joystick: The Meta-
Mallette (see p.8). Playing is a pleasant way to work. It is far away
from the standards and restrictions of everyday and you can easily
find ways to express yourself through it.
Alongside the Orchestra I foresee including in the NOP.nz project
publics that are linked with creation. That is why I plan to work
with the students from the New Zealand School of Music, from the
Media Design School, and also with musicians from the Wellington
Most Famous Orchestra of Miraculous Delights. I wish to increase
professional awareness regarding the possibility that new orchestra
practices present and how they can push the boundaries of their
own fields.

Intercultural encounter of France and New Zealand
NOP.nz is established on the cultural encounter of France and
New Zealand. Unavoidably creation and the people we meet are
bound by the territory they share. A face-to-face meeting of two
different cultures and environments would promote discoveries
and could generate tensions and interplays. Comprehension and
dialogue between the two countries could only be stimulating
New Zealand is a mix of cultures, such as the Maori civilization and
the one inherited from Europeans. Theses arrangements of influen-
ces interest me. I am interested in how New Zealand’s artists take
a hold of that background and blend it with an inventive artis-
tic ground. Also how they shape and synthesize it to make it their
own.

would be the connection of a French conductor and New-Zea-
landers instrumentalists.
Furthermore I will be in charge of distributing the maximum of info
in France that would bring attention to New Zealand. The Docu-
mentation Center of Contemporary Music (CDMC) will use my
feedback and research to complete its database, and the news-
letter from PUCE MUSE will keep an update concerning the pro-
ject’s breakthroughs.

Likewise the country is overwhelmed by abundant nature. New

Zealand has a low population density and at the same time shows
a wide range of landscapes. From volcanic scenery at the north,
to southern mountains and landscapes, with its peculiar insular
location and its numerous wildlife (flora and fauna), this country
is filled with many inspiring influences. During my stay in Iceland I
noticed how the proximity of nature and its strength could be a
inspiring material for artists. The bands Mum and Sigùros move me
by their relevant musical choices in line with their territory and the
special nature they are bound up with. In that context I am very
eager to witness New Zealanders’ working process.

Finally, high-tech is under the watchful eye of New Zealand. The

country keeps up with the latest advances in technology. Instru-
ments used by the Nop.nz scheme initiate are groundbreaking in
the musical and visual arts fields and on the topic of the human-
machine interface.

The intercultural encounter is already taking place in my par-

tnerships seek. I have made contacts with New Zealanders. Accor-
dingly, their feedback is now helping me in the ongoing process
of that project. Artists are the perfect witnesses of a culture I do

This project has many specific aspects. That is why it is necessary
to create a precise repertoire focused on this artistic ensemble. In
the NOP.nz context, New Zealand composers will collaborate to
expand that repertoire in particular.
By means of these call-outs, supported by French and New
Zealand partnerships, each composer will create a piece specially
dedicated to the NOP.nz Orchestra. The call-outs are currently
supported, thought and written with the collaboration of Serge
de Laubier, the artistic director of PUCE MUSE, and Laure MARCEL-
BERLIOZ, the director of the CDMC. These two individuals often
work together on open calls for composers.
About the selection: artists can submit visuals, sounds, chant,
acoustic music or any mixed materials. But they have to use the
Meta-Mallette (p.8), and write a piece that could be played as a
group.
That artistic result is free to go in any kind of direction. Ideally I
wish that the three propositions would show diverse sides of New-
Zealand contemporary creation. Made with the Meta-Malette,
the artworks will be visual and sound-based. But the connections
between sounds and images can vary, as it comes from the
different talents, inspirations and inquiries of the distinct artists
selected.
A precise open call for submission will be sent from France in
September 2010. I will personally receive and sort all of the
applications. I will then present a shorter selection to a jury
composed of the cultural partners of NOP.nz. Three artists will be
chosen in December 2010. Each selected composer will receive
a grant based on the amount of money raised during multiple
fundraisers. The collaborative work will take place in March 2011,
in New Zealand.
A French repertory alive
In France, the resourceful PUCE MUSE association repeatedly
offers residencies. Many French organizations such as SACEM (the
Society of Authors, Composers and Editor of Music) and the DRAC
(Regional direction of Cultural Affairs) support PUSE MUSE. PUSE
MUSE invites composers to create singular piece for the Meta-
Orchestra. This Orchestra was created in 2008 in Paris. It is the first
of its kind to melt images and sounds, and to be played using a
joystick as an instrument. I have conducted this Orchestra since
its creation and I am in charge of following-up on the composers’
works .The art pieces of Gyorgy Kurtag Jr., Serge de Laubier, Hugues
Genevois, Xavier Garcia, Jean-Marc Weber... are regularly played
by the ensemble.
In New Zealand the NOP.nz Orchestra will interpret three pieces
extracted from the French repertoire. For now I plan to work on
«Méta-Sacre», by Serge de Laubier. It is based on Stravinsky’s
«Sacre du Printemps», but departs from it by using a procedures
of transformation, segmentation, and interrogation about space.
«Méta-Sacre» definitely produces an interesting dialog with the
classical field. Two more creations will be chosen depending on
the one coming up in the calls out in 2010.
Hopefully the NOP Orchestra’s repertoire will grow with the New-
Zealand call-outs and the many different propositions that we
obtain will come from various cultures and interests. The NOP
project is an on-going process aimed at increasing the concerns
of its members.

An Orchestra based in New Zealand
I will establish an Orchestra in Wellington or Auckland, cultural
centers of the country. I will be the director and the coordinator of
all the operations.
The innovation of the project is based on three axes:
- The orchestra will be formed by people from disparate
horizons without discrimination of age or skill-level.
- The Orchestra will play contemporary pieces correlating
image and sound at the same time.
- The orchestra does not have one shape, it is an evolving
process. With each new artistic proposition, in each of the
Orchestra’s performances, in the way it is conducted and with
the players, every time the orchestra is reborn.
In order to constitute the Orchestra I am currently working closely
with local structures like the French Alliance of Wellington, and the
New Zealand School of Music. Due to past experiences, I have
decided that at first the persons involve in the NOP.nz project will
already be connected to the art field, or to any intercultural matters,
or have professional skills in pedagogy or innovation. The Meta-
Orchestra in Paris engages mainly science students, composers
and researchers and only a few people not connected to any
group. Certainly there are no conditions that would limit individual’s
participation in the Orchestra, beside the rehearsal schedules and
the personal investment required. Every participant will have to be
free one evening per week to practice, and available for all of the
Orchestra’s public shows.
Depending on the contacts that will be made locally in New
Zealand, it is possible to form several orchestras. In that particular
case each orchestra can work on a different piece. Alternately,
orchestras can work on the same part or get together during
public performances.
The Soundpainting
Soundpainting is a language use to conduct an orchestra. Walter
Thompson in the United-States in the 90’ has invented it. It is often
use in France especially by the Jazz Musician Union.
I am deeply interested to include that process in the NOP scheme
because that language is made to lead numerous disciplines of art.
By soundpainting you can guide with your indications musicians,
visual art artists, dancers, comedians...
Frequently in the orchestra context I practice soundpainting
techniques with musicians and visual artists using the Meta-
Mallette.
Sporadically some invited musicians are using their own instruments
instead of the Meta-Malette, again soundpainting is used to
conduct them and integrate them with the rest of the band.
Walter Thompson is supporting the NOP.nz project, he is really
enthusiastic of the idea that soundpainting will soon cross the
border of New Zealand.

The Meta-Mallette
The Meta-Mallette is a mechanism to play with multiplayer in real
time sounds and images on a single computer.

It’s developed since 2005 by the Pole of resources in Alive Visual

and Virtual Music PUCE MUSE based in the region of Paris.

Each Meta-Malette player uses a joystick for video games to

modify sounds and images. Not any specific abilities are needed
to manage that particular instrument. Hence the learning process
is based on the gesture. The movement is adapting on the age
and the moving capacities of the player, but this instrument offers
an easy access for all. The tabs are written in gesture codes and
not in musical writing.

The repertory of the Meta-Malette keeps growing. It gets a hold of

contemporary pieces of Serge de Laubier, Gyorgy Kurtag Jr., and
Terry Riley... But it is also possible to interpret piece coming from a
classical repertory.

The selected artists will have to use the Meta-Mallette. I will go

along with the composers in order to help them to get the control
over the equipment. During the process I will stay put and help
them in the dialogue between the equipment and their artistic
surroundings.

Serge de Laubier creator of the system supports the project in

order for that novelty tool to provoke artistic encounters and
flourish meeting.

In New Zealand
The first shows will take place during the second semester of 2011. The
orchestra will work in partnership with local and public organizations
related to creation, cultural interchange, technology innovation,
and pedagogy. In cooperation with the French Embassy, the
French Alliance of Wellington and Lucien Johnson (see below) the
following opportunities alliances are being currently considered:
- NZ Festival
- Rugby World-Cup 2011
- Auckland Festival
- Christchurch Festival
- Nelson Arts Festival
- Taupo Arts Festival
- WOMAD
- Otago Arts Festival
- Parihaka Peace Festival
All theses events will put the project in touch with a larger
audience in New Zealand’s public spaces. A piece realization will
be prepared in accordance with the expectations and abilities
of the audience. These actions aim to raise awareness of the
construction of ephemeral orchestras. Many sites and institutions
can host the shows:
- Primary schools, and secondary schools
- Art schools like the New Zealand School of Music
- Private companies...
Moreover, instruction sessions can be organized to encourage those
New Zealanders willing to keep working on the French innovation
method, the Meta-Mallette. I will be in charge of every training,
integration and session related to the Meta-Mallette system. This
will be done in collaboration with PUCE MUSE, the association that
initially came up with the creation.
In France
Several institutions in France are already using the Meta-Mallette
system in an orchestra:
- PUCE MUSE and the UPMC (University Pierre et Marie Curie)
with the Meta-Orchestra
- NATIONALE EDUCATION MINISTERY with the Dorgeles high
school in Paris
- SCHOOLS OF ART like the Fine arts school of Orléans ...
The resourceful PUCE MUSE is my contact in France. I will be
using they monthly newsletter in order to related info about the
breakthrough of the NOP project and it’s contribution in the New
Zealander creation. Finally it is feasible for some French Orchestras
to play the New Zealand art pieces that have specially been
created within the NOP.nz project.
In the context of “the Paris Young Adventure Grant”, a show will
take place in Paris in 2012. This exceptional event will sensitize French
audiences with a cultural proposal on the subject of encounters of
mixed cultures. Various deeds:
-The broadcast of a documentary will report the progression
of the NOP project in New Zealand, and evolutions in the creation
of orchestra, will transmit the public shows. It will highlight the gap
and the closeness between the cultures, and the gain engender
by cultural bumps.
- The creation of an online database with an online library
reveling a French and a New Zealander repertoire (see p.11).
Consequently everyone attracted by the project can get a hold
on all info in turn to make it ones own.
- The creation of an ephemera orchestra. First the orchestra
will practice to show a sketch of a New- Zealander piece. Then in
collaboration with the cultural center of La Goutte D’Or in Paris
and the Dorgeles high school the project will be passing on and

On a World Wide Scale
Right from the outset notes, partitions, videos, and work instructions
I will document the work done in New Zealand... Everything will be
added in the database: The Meta-Library. Before now this library
exists in France. It includes original project of orchestra under
the supervision of PUSE MUSE. All documents are accessible to
everyone as it is an online supply it opens great perspectives:
- NOP experience can proliferate on a world scale. Anyone
interested by New Practice of Orchestra (NOP) can find rapidly all
data.
- Any other Orchestra will be able to find the adequate
indications to re-play properly pieces from the repertory. Therefore
a network of new orchestras could be form.

NOP.nz is structured around two essential keystones:

- The creation of Orchestra that gathered highly motivated
members to be part of a fresh artistic adventure.
- The teamwork of artists issued from distinctive cultures.
We can imagine the NOP project can be reborn in other nations
with fresh challenges, and further cultural goals. NOP is like a model,
which could be reinvented in novel countries: Other Countries,
Other NOPs.

Resume
I studied Music and Visual Art in French Art Schools. I’m interesting in orchestra playing the piece InC of Terry Riley.
comparing these subjects in order to investigate their connection
points and specificities. All these researches gave me opportunities °°° Visual orchestra: students from the Art School of Orleans did
to understand and feel the Art better. experiments to plays images together. Each one controlled it own
video and they created together a visual piece in real time.
As I was wishing to share my feeling and my knowledge about
Art, I worked in different educational departments. I was an Art
teacher for the ministry of education, a flute teacher for a music
school and I am currently in charge of pedagogy for PUCE MUSE,
a French center for Live Virtual and Visual Music. In every situation,
I offered suited activities to develop the feeling and the worldview
of different people.

Nowadays, I am leading artistic projects in close collaboration with

PUCE MUSE. We form bands, which plays music and images. The
orchestras’ members are using the Meta-Mallette, an electronic
system allowing people to play various repertoires, easily. For my
part, I make the content of rehearsals, I create notices, I conduct
the orchestra and assume the relationship with the partners. Here
are examples of my work:

°°° Meta-Orchestra: first French electronic orchestra using joysticks

in order to play visual and music. This orchestra exist since 2008
and rehearsals are made every month in Paris. It plays electronic
pieces of Serge de Laubier, Gyorgy Kurtag Jr...

°°° Different generations Orchestra: mix of people with the age

of 4, 10 and more than 70 years old. All that players performed a
concert at the festival “Bains Numérique” in France.

°°° International orchestra: during the French Festival of San Jose,

a Costa Rican’s orchestra was made. Three French pieces were
performed during the opening night.

authority worked together during one year to create a big

is developped by PUCE MUSE and will
be the NOP.nz orchestra’s instrument.

Video of a Meta-Orchestra concert .

It is the first French electronic orches-
tra using joysticks in order to play visual
and music. This orchestra exist since
2008 and rehearsals are made every
month in Paris.

Chère Nolwenn,

Nous venons par ce courrier, passer un petit moment avec toi pour te dire
combien nous sommes heureux d’avoir fait ta connaissance.
Avec le peu de temps que nous avons passé ensemble nous avons apprécié
ta simplicité, ta gentillesse, ta patience, et ta passion.
Nous voulons te remercier de nous avoir fait découvrir une nouvelle façon
de voir la musique.

D’ailleurs, voici les appréciations de quelques uns d’entre nous.

Aysela : Découverte d’un moyen de produire de la musique autrement. «J’ai
participé à une musique du futur»!....
Souad : Utiliser le joystick pour moi était étonnant, plus je le manipulais
plus l’image sur l’écran était plus grand et le son plus fort ce, qui était va-
lorisant pour moi.
Noémie : Faire de la musique professionnelle en m’amusant.
Lwisa : Sans jamais toucher un instrument de musique faire partie d’un
orchestre, trop facile !
Fatiha : Enfin j’ai pu tout comprendre comme tout le monde sans parler
français comme il faut.
Wahida : J’espère que mon bébé a pu aimé ma propre musique.
