My Practicum Course was conducted at SMK Naning,

Melaka for the duration of 6 months. In those 6
memorable months I had implemented most of what I
had learned during my long course and encountered
many challenging problems that I had to adapt to and
solve accordingly. In this portfolio I have attached my
Practicum Evaluation Forms from my Supervisor as well
as a few examples of my students work.

My Overall Reflection on the Experience

I was just a housewife, taking care of my children and my home was
my most important responsibility. Now, my children are all grown up and I
had decided to grab this opportunity to further my studies by obtaining a
degree in TESL course at OUM. Teaching has always been my passion ever
since I was in high school. However, I never got the opportunity to further my

studies after high school due to financial difficulties and later on my

responsibilities as a wife and a mother. When I finally got the chance to teach
as a student-teacher, I was nervous. I was just inches away from achieving
my long abandoned dream.
On my first day as a student-teacher, taking the first step into the
classroom and start addressing the students was nerve-wracking. However,
after seeing their young, innocent faces and their thirst for knowledge,
teaching them comes naturally to me. Years of experience as a mother to
three rather mischievous children most certainly help me to conduct the
classroom of almost 30 students. Most of the students I was given
responsibility to teach were from rural areas. They carry the hopes and
dreams of their families to study and lead a better life in the future. Seeing
their poor conditions gave me the determination and resolution to try as hard
as I could to educate them. I realized that being a teacher is not just a job, it
is a commitment and a dedication. Teachers have to go above and beyond
for their students all the time, as the students future depends on the extent
on knowledge a teacher could provide them.
I portray myself as a strict teacher who would not tolerate any
nonsense and this helps me to gain the students full attention during my
lessons. Most of the students hardly speak a word of English and they were
shy to start. I encourage the students to speak in English during my class
through negative reinforcement. Whenever I caught a student speaking a
word of Bahasa Malaysia during my class, they were punished by having to
recite a poem in front of the whole class. This punishment not only forces
students to speak in English but also help them to overcome their shyness
and at the same time exposing them to a vast collection on vocabulary.
During my experience as a student-teacher, I have grown attached to
my students. Watching their positive progression in learning English gave me
a sense of pride and a warm, fuzzy feeling. I wish that each and every one of
my student would be successful in their lives. As for me, I could not wait to
implement all I have learnt during my long course and my practicum to start
educating the young generation of our country. This practicum course only
serves to make me realize that I have so much more to contribute in the
Teaching of English as Second Language and I have never been happier than
when I am teaching.

The students thought

of creative ways to
apply what they have
learnt in the classroom
in their daily lives.
Some students created
realistic toy cars by
using some old boxes
they found. One of them create a vase from old water bottle and
design the colourful flowers and stems using straws. The end
result is a pretty looking handicraft which can be used to decorate
the classroom or even as a gift. Another creative student
fashioned a set of pestle and mortar by using mashed old
newspaper. This also help in showcasing traditional instruments
for student to appreciate.

Experience as English Lecturer

I have been working at Unifield International College

since August 2015 and it has helped me to grow as a
teacher and an individual immensely. I had implemented
several teaching methods and techniques and this helped
improve my students results infinitely. I taught three
English courses which are, English Proficiency, English for
Academic
Studies
and
English
for
Professional
Communications. I also learned to create assessments
and write examination papers. I grade my students
papers with care and always provide them with
constructive criticism to help them improve their work. I
also attended several courses for my professional growth,
namely, Andragogy Course which focus on adult learning
and OBE (Outcome Based Education) Course, which as its
name suggested helps educators to plan and design a
framework that ensures students achieve the learning
outcome after each lesson.

I instruct my students to
keep a Daily Vocabulary
Journal where they will
write down a couple of
difficult or new words each
day and its definition
along with an example of
sentence where the word
is used properly.

I also conduct a weekly spelling test to

improve students spelling ability and
sharpen their phonic and phonetic
abilities. I reward the student with the
highest mark in spelling quizzes with a
bookmark with motivational quotes from
famous authors. This serves as a positive

Mind Maps
I often find Mind Maps are
a great medium to use in
brainstorming or gathering
of
information
before
writing an essay or simply
as a method to memorize
facts. This is an example

Group work
Group works are learner oriented learning method and this
encourages active participation from every member of the class.
Group work also allows me to examine students understanding
on the topic they learned beforehand. Besides being a tool to
promote students confidence and improve their speaking skills.

Authentic Materials

I find the use of

Social Medias
Social media in classroom
can be a controversial
topic,
however,
I
personally condone the
use of social media as it
brings me closer to the
students in a professional manner. Any and all information can
also be shared immediately through social media like Facebook
and Whatsapp. Creating a discussion group is also highly useful
and students can easily reach me in case they encounter and
problems in completing their tasks.

Cognitive Outcomes of Teaching

It is my job to provide optimal settings that increase the ability of
students to evaluate, differentiate and integrate information, think
analytically, problem solve, communicate and reach sound
conclusions. Recognizing and accepting diverse cognitive and
communicative modalities is critical.

Curricular
Skills

and

Instructional

Planning

My focus is to prepare lesson plans that include goals, objectives,

strategies, activities, materials and assessment plans that are well

defined and coordinated. These plans reflect cross-cultural and

individual understandings and provide equal access to the curriculum.

Classroom

Management

and

In my classroom I endeavour to establish and sustain a level of student

rapport and a classroom environment that promotes learning, caring,
multicultural understanding and equity, fosters mutual respect among
class members and respect for individual differences.

Student Diagnosis, Achievement and

Evaluation
An important place to begin any lesson is in assessing students prior
knowledge. You can then set appropriate instructional objectives and
evaluate all students needs and achievements. Assessment of my
students must include a variety of methods in order to measure their
range of capabilities. Objective records balance subjective compilations
of growth and exemplary works.

Capacity to Teach Cross-Culturally

I strive to successfully work with students with individual differences.
Differences such as gender, academic ability, culture, race, ethnicity
and socioeconomic background are what make each of us unique.
