Expansion Joints and Bellows

Speed Wrap
Stock expansion joints to minimize downtime

Speed Wrap
Whatever your industry; power generation,
board mill, cement, petrochemical, steel, or
if any of your process involves high temperatures, can you afford the downtime
caused by expansion joint failure?
TICO Speedwrap provides a rapid, economic solution to the problem of failed
expansion joints. Our many years of experience of supplying this product have taught
us that the emergency answer very often
becomes the permanent solution.
The Speedwrap outer cover is normally
supplied in silicone or fluoroelastomer for
resistance to high temperature, acidic conditions and the effects of ultraviolet rays,
ozone, etc. For specialized services, alternative elastomers are available.

Pressures:

In addition to its prime function as a

reinforcement, the PTFE layer is a barrier
for flue gases containing SO2 and SO3
resulting from sulfur or sour fuels. Only
pure virgin PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene)
is used, as other TFE variations do not offer
the required temperature/acid compatibility.
The inner insulation layer is manufactured
from woven, high temperature continuous
filament glass cloth, which is impregnated
with a high temperature dry lubricant to
avoid abrasion from the flexing of individual
glass filaments.

Up to 10ft/second without flow liners.

For higher velocities, or if abrasive particles
are present, flow liners are required to maximize service life.

Up to plus or minus 30" W.G. on larger

sizes, with proportional pressure limits
increased for smaller sizes.
Gas Velocities:

Quick and easy to install

Increased flex fatigue life over alternative
systems
No insulation loss due to vibration shakedown
Simple and effective method of field
splicing
Comprehensive stock of standard sizes
and models
Competitive prices
Rapid response to non-standard requirements
Technical sales and design support

Comflex HT/XA Expansion Joints bridge the gap

between metallic and non-metallic expansion joints
Comflex HT/XA Expansion Joints
Comflex HT/XA Expansion Joints and
related products are extremely rugged,
maintaining good flexibility throughout their
temperature range. They are manufactured
from a twill-woven fabric of stainless steel
wire and glass yarn, proofed with a special
high temperature resistant compound.
Typically these products are used on gas
turbine exhausts (power generation and
marine duties), penetration seals, rotary air
heater internal seals for power plants and
furnace exhausts at steel mills. HT/XA
excels under high ambient temperature
conditions.
HT/XA is the ideal choice to bridge the gap
between metallic and-non-metallic expansion joints. Its unique construction allows
large movements in confined spaces.

and Bellows

Expansion Joints

Flue Duct Expansion Joints

The James Walker Comflex range of gas

turbine exhaust joints and the adjacent
steel parts offer unique solutions to
problems such as high temperatures, large
movements, pulsations, vibrations and
water washing.

These two materials are manufactured into

expansion joints using only a single layer.
The elastomers, usually in materials such
as Viton from Dupont or Ethylene
Propylene (EPDM), are constructed with
layers of reinforcement of fiberglass, wire
mesh or Kevlar.

These are used primarily as heavy-duty

protectors in many different industries.
Typical applications include the protection
of screw down gear on rolling mills and
hydraulic rams on heavy presses, as well
as the fabrication of cooling air ducts on
traction motors for diesel-electric
locomotives. They are also popular as
slide covers.

James Walker Comflex offers joints and

steel parts for most GT applications with
joints successfully working in perhaps the
most difficult GT applications, for example
Siemens 94.3, GEs frame 9F. James
Walker Comflex joints and steel work have
been designed utilizing finite element and
heat sink calculations. This analysis
calculates temperature differentials, stress
levels and fatigue life based on start up and
shut down cycles of gas turbine. To support
the computer analysis calculations,
temperature measurements are taken from
the field and workshop test rigs.

PTFE, on the other hand, is the ultimate in

chemical resistance. It is highly lightweight,
temperature resistant and easy to install.
Both materials are available in different
thickness, weight and have a variety of
reinforcements.
This style is usually recommended for
difficult applications when moisture,
chemicals or vibration is present in the
system. The robust nature of the product
allows it to be used in heavy dust load
applications without the need for an
internal sleeve.

Based on heavy-duty elastomer-proofed

fabrics, these bellows are a totally
vulcanized construction that provides a
particularly rugged product. Various layers
are preformed prior to the vulcanizing
process. This avoids the weakness inherent
in bellows fabricated from separate pieces
joined by stitching or other mechanical
means. Split bellows are available for
easy replacement.

Comflex Wraps, Joints & Bellows

Comflex Fabric Wraps

Fabric expansion joint wraps are a product
that allows customers to stock rolls of standard materials with installation and splicing
instructions. In the event of a failure a client
will remove the old joint and wrap the new
material around the existing frame, joining
the ends together using the splicing procedure provided.
Models are available to suit a variety of
services and temperatures to 2000 F.

Comflex Metallic Expansion Joints

Comflex Hand Built Pipe Joints

Comflex Sewn Bellows

Metallic expansion joints are installed in

piping systems to absorb differential
thermal expansion and vibration while
containing the system pressure. James
Walker Comflex offers a complete range
of metallic joints and includes the standard
Axial, Lateral and Angular range plus the
ability to design joints to suit your individual
requirements.

James Walker Comflex hand built rubber

pipe expansion joints are designed to
absorb motion and displacement between
pipe flanges. A wide variety of designs are
available permitting optimum selection of
materials and construction for many ranges
of temperature and pressure. Standard
sizes are available but custom built
configurations up to 100" bore are available
on request.

Sewn bellows offer a fast, economical

solution to the problems associated with
the exclusion of dust and dirt from cylinder
rods and screw jacks. For a relatively
low cost, sewn bellows not only protect
valuable and expensive machinery, but also
extend the working life, reducing down time
and increasing productivity. Sewn Bellows
can be made quickly and economically to
suit your exact requirements. A wide range
of materials and designs are available.
