Exercise 1 (chapter 1)

1. By your own words, explain a Hierarchical Network Design (6 marks)

2. Explain the four implementation requirements that have to consider during
designing scalability networks. (16 marks)
3. Complete the attachment file below
4. By your own words, describe about STP function and its varieties which is
PVST+ and Rapid PVST+. (12 marks)

Answer:
1.
Hierarchical network design is an industry wide adopted model for designing a
reliable,
scalable, and cost efficient internetwork. There are three layer in
model which is access, distribution, and core layer.

Access Layer = provides workgroup/user access to the network.

Distribution Layer = provides policy-based connectivity and controls the boundary
between the access and core layers.
Core Layer = provides fast transport between distribution switches within the
enterprise campus.

2.
Four implementation requirements:
Hierarchy :

i) clarifies the role of each device in each tier

ii) simpler to deploy, operate, and manage the network
iii) reduces fault domains at every tier

Modularity : enables growing the network on demand basis

Resilency :

meets users expectation of network always being available

Flexibility :

allows intelligent traffic load-sharing by using all network resources

4.
STP is a network protocol that builds a logical loop-free topology for Ethernet
networks. The function of STP is to prevent bridge loops and the broadcast radiation
that results from them.
The first variety is PVST+ or the long name is Per VLAN Spanning Tree Plus. It
provides the same functionality as PVST using 802.1Q trunking technology rather
than ISL. PVST+ is an enhancement to the 802.1Q specification and is not
supported on non-Cisco devices. The second variety is Rapid PVST+. It is an
updated implementation of STP that allows you to create one spanning tree
topology for each VLAN. Rapid PVST+ is the default STP mode on the switch.
