But since we're talking about India, nothing can be normal. So let me phrase it this way. 2 states is not your everyday love story where a girl and a boy meet, fall in love and get married thereafter. It is a story about Krish and Ananya who come from, as the title suggests two different states of India, and fall in love. But for their families, marrying someone from a different religion is worse than being a atheist. So throw in two hardcore emotional Indian mothers, a remote controlled and a pshcyo father, you have the story of a Indian couple from 2 STATES trying to get it married. Will they make The plot of the book revolves around the two protagonist's of the story. Krish and Ananya.
Krish Malhotra comes from a hardcore Punjabi
family, who loves their chicken and alcohol more than human beings. Krish as a child, had always been a brght child. So naturally, his Dad wanted him to take the IIT. At IIT, he fell for a girl. And not just any girl, the professors daughter. But the father of the girl did not agree to it. Krish asked his father, who comes from an army background to talk to her father. But Krish's father slapped him instead. From there everything went downfall. Krish heard his father beating his mom up like he always did, but he couldn't take it anymore. He slapped his father back. The girls father bribed Krish to leave his daughter in return of an IIT degree. Krish agreed. Fast forward to the time when Krish wanted to do a MBA. He decided to do it from IIMA, Ahemdabad. That's where he met Ananya.
Ananya Swaminathan - best girl in the fresher
batch. She was the prettiest girl in the entire
batch and that also between 200 other odd
desperate engineers. Ananya Swaminathan fights with her mess server about the food. That's when she meets Krish. She can't digest the 'disgusting' stuff cooked by the mess, so takes Krish along with her to Topaz, and orders Tandoori Chicken. She comes from a Tamilian Brahmin family to be precise and ate chicken and drank alcohol, inspite of being a Tam-Brahm.
The story then shows how Krish is friend
zoned by Ananya, and how he tries to get out of the friend zone. Ananya is sure she likes him as a friend only, and doesn't want to lose him as she is getting a lot of attention from his fellow mates. Krish gets tired of the friend zone and finally manages to confess to her that he likes her.
Ananya Swaminathan agrees and seals the
deal. Fast forward one and a half year, They decide to tell their parents about their relationship during their convocation ceremony. But Krish wasn't sure if he wanted to drag Ananya in the mess he calls his life. He couldn't commit to her no matter what. But while their interviews were going on, Krish barges into her interview room and proposes her for marriage. Ananya had got a job at HLL and Krish at Citi bank. During the convocation, when their parents meet nothing goes right. They insult each other and let their arrogance and ego come in way. Krish then selects the Chennai branch of Citi Bank, and tries to woo Ananya's parents.
IIT tutions for her brother, help in a PPT for
her father and a chance to sing in front of big artists for her mother, later he manages to convince them for marriage. He proposes to the entire family with gold rings whilist eating coconut ice cream. They agree on the condition that Krish's parents also should accept Ananya. Krish gets excited, and they start planning the part two if their plan. In Delhi, it's Krish's cousin Minti's wedding. Krish sees it as a perfect opportunity for Ananya to convince his Mother and his maternal family. When Minti's in-laws ask her family for a huge dowry and they are already in debt due to the lavish wedding functions. Ananya steps in and convinces Duke ( Minti's husband) by patronizing him and showing him his place. He then tells his parents that he will get married to Minti only, if they like or not. Krish's maternal family is grateful to Ananya and starts loving her. Ananya then gets the blessings of Krish's mother.
Just when they thought they were done, they
realised that there was still a rift between their families. They decided a long vacation away from all the relatives was just what they needed. Krish manges to get them booked in Goa. But when then the parents meet alot of nasty comments, insults and mean things said and done managed to break the bond Ananya and Krish had. Ananya overheard Krish manipulating his mother about how they could keep her under their thumb once they get married. She was livid and broke up with Krish. Everything from then goes down the drain, Krish goes into deep depression, his mother tries everything from extra butter on his paranthas go showing him other girls, she tries to make him forget her. Krish flies to Chennai to convince Ananya but in vain. All of this is noticed by Krish's father.
His father secretly takes over the job of
mending things with Ananya's family. Ananya calls Krish in the wee hours of morning and tells him that she loves him, and that they have to start planning their wedding. Krish then goes and hugs his father and everything is just as good as it could get. Krish and Ananya get married in Chennai in a South Indian type wedding much to the dismay of his relatives. And they then live happily ever after. The theme of the book potrays the narrow and backward thinking of Indian society. It shows that sometimes parents think more about the society than their children. But more importantly the book shows that no matter what if you strive hard enough for something good your parents will give in. Also it portrays that if you love something with your entire being you shouldn't give up on it no matter what. Theme
