During the lectures you need to read the highlighted words,

The full sentences and the text are there for you to read later
when you study.

Assessment
Component 1:
Coursework (30%)
You will submit a report (2,000 words or equivalent) based on the
construction and analysis of compositional reservoir fluid model
using an industry standard simulator.

Elements of a Petroleum System:

4.

Source rock: A deposit which is rich in organic matter, that had been subject to
high pressure and temperature over geological time scales.
Migration path way: A permeable path that allows the hydrocarbons to migrate
from the source rock to the reservoir rock, due to increasing overburden pressure.

Elements of a petroleum system:

2. Migration path way
3. Reservoir: A porous and permeable layer(s) of rock that can store hydrocarbons
4. Trap (seal): An impermeable layer of rock which stops the hydrocarbons from
escaping to the surface.

Hydrocarbon Origins
Hydrogen and carbon are sourced from organic material such as decaying plants
and animals that have accumulated while sediments deposited in basins.
The deposited organic matters have been altered by heat, bacterial action and
pressure over geological time.

Reservoir Fluids
Reservoir fluids are mainly composed of hydrocarbons and water.

During production the reservoir fluid goes from high pressure and
temperature to low P and T.

The behaviour of reservoir fluid

Its chemical composition
T and P

subsurface : high pressure and high temperature conditions

surface : low pressure and low temperature conditions

For volumetric and flow calculations it is essential to know how many fluid phases a
reservoir contains at a specific T and P : Two-phase or Three-phase?

Reservoir Simulation
A tool to examine the fluid flow within the reservoir over time.

With these two components integrated you can have fluid flow simulations and
predict future productions.

Reservoir Fluid Behaviour

Using fluid flow simulations performed on a reservoir model, a
reservoir engineer is able to suggest field development
scenarios.
Example: At some specific point in time (say after 10 year
production, the reservoir will become three phase).
Example: The production of a gas reservoir may decline after a
while due to some liquid formation and blockage of the
reservoir pore space.
