A Im Ms. Tanaka
Welcome to 2nd grade! Were going to be learning so much this year
from each other from our new and exciting
experiences together. My goal, as your childs
teacher, is to foster that intrinsic love of
learning and discovery that all children hold
with a structure of care and understanding.
I thought you would like to know a little bit
about me. I have lived on the windward side of
Oahu in the beautiful town of Kaneohe my entire life. During the weekdays, I
stay in Mililani with my brother and his family to shorten my commute to
work. In my free time, I like to eat, paddle board, play soccer, shop, watch
T.V., and spend time with my family and friends.
Although I lived in Kaneohe, I am a graduate of Moanalua High School. In
2011, I earned a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from the
University of Hawaii at Manoa. I am currently working towards my Masters
degree in Curriculum Studies with a focus in Language Arts and Literacy,
and will graduate in May 2017.
This will be my third year of teaching 2nd grade at Daniel K. Inouye
Elementary. I have previously taught kindergarten and 3rd grade.
Communication is a vital part of our classroom. Please feel free to contact
me via email (msatanaka@gmail.com) and/or Remind when you feel the need.
If you have any questions about the information in this handbook, feel free
to ask at anytime. I look forward to working with you as a team to best
support your child this year!
Thank you,

Classroom Management
Our classroom management program integrates the Tribes agreements and the GLOs.
Tribes: Our school is a Tribes school. Tribes is a philosophy of building a community of
learners by including everyone. The Tribes process fosters a caring learning
environment for cooperative learning and positive interaction for all groups. A Tribes
community functions under five agreements:
Attentive Listening * Mutual Respect * Appreciations/No Put Downs
Right to Pass/Right to Participate * Safety First
General Learner Outcomes (GLOs): The Department of Education here in Hawaii has mandated a set
of goals intended for student success in and outside of the classroom. Students are expected to
follow the these outcomes throughout the year. Student also receive a rating of Consistently, Usually,
Sometimes, or Rarely on their performance in each of the six areas at the end of every quarter on
their report card.
General Learner Outcomes
GLO #1: Self-Directed Learner:
I am responsible for my learning.

GLO #2: Community Contributor

I work well with others.

GLO #3: Complex Thinker

I think of different ways to solve socially and
academically.

I recognize and produce quality work.

GLO #5: Effective Communicator

I communicate effectively through a variety of
means.

GLO #6: Effective and Ethical User of

Technology
I use the computer and other learning tools
effectively and ethically to discover and share
my learning..

From Day 1, your child will be involved in co-constructing classroom expectations and behaviors that
will be followed throughout the school year. We are promoting students to self-monitor and assess
their choices based off of these expectations. A student-created GLO tracker sheet will be sent
home during the 2nd-3rd week of school for you to review your childs daily progress. We encourage
students to be involved in the goal setting process and to be aware of their choices.
Caught being good tickets: Students will earn tickets when they are caught being good. They will be
able to redeem prizes using their tickets.
Possible consequences for undesirable school behaviors (depending on behavior):
Timeout from a preferred activity
Conference with teacher

Note written home to parent in student planner

Conference with counselor

Send to office to meet with an administratorClassroom expectations will be established on the

first day of school and we periodically review them with the class.
