Title : Managing terraced lowland and medium sloping land for sustainable
Agriculture: a study from the Eastern Ghat region of India.
Source : Irrigation and Drainage
Vol/Iss/Mth : 60(5), Dec Year : 2011 Pages : 694-702
Keywords : Paddy Soils, Irrigation Channel, Eastern Ghat,
Abstract : Judicious management of the Terraced low lands and adjacent medium
sloping lands of the Eastern Ghat region in India was addressed through a case
study, in order to develop a sustainable Agriculture package as a resource for
poor tribal farmers. Quantification of available water resources during the
period 2004-2007 revealed that average base flow and surface flow (as
percentage of total rainfall)at a level of 37.2 and 34.7 percent respectively,
could be made available in the study area and would otherwise go out of the
system without proper utilisation. Economic resource conservation options for
farmers, such as the management of Paddy field riser bunds through construction
of semi mechanical runoff disposal devices supplemented with a Eulaliopsis
binata vegetative barrier, helped in reducing runoff and soil loss by 10.6
percentage and 1.45 tha-1 respectively.

Title : Ways to improve water Governance

Vol/Iss/Mth : 60(5),Dec Year : 2011 Pages : 569-578
Keywords : Water Governance,Water law,
Abstract : In order to guarantee access to water for different
countries, regions and individuals,it is necessary to elaborate and adopt for
Governance in general a body of legal, financial, institutional, and economic
tools and mechanisms that would become an indisputable set of rules as a kind
of Bible for modern humankind and as a way to survice.Water Governance should
prevent any attempt to use water as a means of political or economic pressure
or as a good like oil transformed into the subject of profiteering.Water is
holy thing and we all must take care of and save it so that everyone might have
access to water in adequate quantity and quality.

Title : Drainage Development: driving forces, conducive conditions and
development trajectories
Source : Irrigation and drainage
Vol/Iss/Mth : 60(5),Dec. Year : 2011 Pages : 654-659
Keywords : Drainage Engineering, Agricultural Development ,Rural Development,
Abstract : The core of this consists of an analysis of the forces and conducive
conditions which historically driven the drainage development of agricultural
land. Such forces and conditions are recognised at three levels of discretion:
1)the generic level,2)The Government level 3)The on farm level. The drainage
development for salinity control of irrigated land in the semi arid zone is
treated as a special case of drainage development, driven by its own specific
forces and considerations. It is concluded that drainage development in regular
rainfed agricultural land is primarily driven by its economic utility as an
instrument for achieving more profitable land use and for overcoming
constraints to further agricultural development.

Title : Improving irrigation water operation in the lower reaches of the Amu
Darya River - current status and suggestions.
Source : Irrigation and Drainage
Vol/Iss/Mth : 60(5),Dec Year : 2011 Pages : 600-612
Keywords : Ground water, Salinity, Sustainable water supply,
Abstract : Irrigated agriculture is widespread in the Central Asian drylands
and important for food security of the region. However , irrigation practices,
based on rules made for cotton production on large units, do not provide

adequate guidance for the now widespread small farms that produce cotton, wheat
and rice. Excessive, unsustainable water use is the consequence. Land and water
resource management practices were analysed in 2006 for the irrigated area of a
water users' association (WUA) as a case study.

Title : Hydraulic performance of drip irrigation systems with municipal waste
water
Source : Journal of agricultural Engineering
Vol/Iss/Mth : 48(2),Apr-Jun Year : 2012 Pages : 15-22
Keywords : Hydraulic performance, Drip irrigation, Waste water, Crop Science,
Abstract : Generation of waste water in huge amounts is putting a lot of
pressure on irrigation engineers for its safe disposal or reuse in agriculture.
Though waste water could contribute to major and minor nutritional requirement
of crops, but the presence of microbial contaminants and toxic elements limits
its use. Utilisation of waste water for irrigation through drip irrigation
system seems to be a good choice to reduce the chances of contamination due to
restricted quantity of water application. Since clogging in such a situation
would be the main problem, its remediation is required for enhanced utilisation
of waste water through drip irrigation system. Physical and chemical
characteristics of waste water were determined and compared with ground water

Abstract : The present study was carried out in Krishna Western Delta, with the
data of IRS P6 (Resource Sat-I)LISS III to evaluate the overall performance of
irrigation during Kharif 2005 in Modukur command using performance indicators
and comparing with historical values using Earth Resource Data Analysis System
9.0 and model crop irrigation water requirement. Irrigation performance
assessment was judged by arriving at different performance indicators.

Abstract : This Article is based on the experience gained during the course of
appraisal of vast number of medium irrigation projects located in
Maharashtra. The projects are of different types like lift irrigation
schemes, storage schemes, diversion schemes and projects having conjunctive
utilisation, projects not having their own distributing system and so on.The
issues pointed out are with the sole intention of sharing the experiences of
leading to improve the system for expeditious clearance of projects and not to
point out short comings of any agency involved in the process.

Title : Modeling the water balance processes for understanding the components
of river discharge in a non-conservative watershed
Source : Transactions of ASABE
Vol/Iss/Mth : 54(6), Nov-Dec Year : 2011 Pages : 2171-2180
Keywords : Water Balance,SWAT,
Abstract : The study was conducted in the Shibetsu watershed eastern Hokkaido,
Japan, to examine the possibility of using the soil and water assessment tool
model in a non conservative watershed with external contribution (EXT).In this
study the EXT was roughly estimated from the water balance equation using
measured data. The average daily flux of EXT was assumed as a point source
discharge in SWAT. The simulation of daily stream flow during the calibration
and validation periods produced satisfactory results. The result indicated that
the EXT was an important water source in the shibetsu watershed, accounting
for47 percent of stream flow during the study period.

Title : Irrigation scheduling based on crop canopy temperature for humid
environments
Source : Transactions of ASABE
Vol/Iss/Mth : 24(6), Nov-Dec Year : 2011 Pages : 2021-2028
Keywords : Water Use Efficiency ,Irrigation Scheduling,
Abstract : The use of infrared thermometers (IR)to measure canopy temperatures
for irrigation scheduling has been successfully applied in arid environments.
Functionality of this technique in humid areas has been limited due to the
presence of low vapor pressure deficits (VPD) and intermittent cloud cover.
This study evaluated an alternate scheduling method for humid environments
based on comparing measured canopy temperature with calculated canopy
temperature of a well watered crop. Irrigation was applied when the measured
canopy temperature was greater than the predicted canopy temperature for more
than three consecutive hours on two consecutive days. This method was evaluated
against well watered, semi stressed, and dry land treatments of Corn, Soybean,
and Cotton on the basis of Yield, irrigation amount and irrigation water use
efficiency (IWUE).

Source : Transactions of ASABE
Vol/Iss/Mth : 54(6),Nov-Dec Year : 2011 Pages : 2227-2236
Keywords : Bacteria,Watershed Management,Waste water treatment,
Abstract : This study evaluated the presence of indicator bacteria at 13 sites
in the middle santa ana river watershed (MSAR).The objective of this study were
to:1)examine spatial and temporal charactistics of fecal bacteria loading
during dry weather(low or baseline),flow,wet weather (Storm)flow,and
recessional flow along two creeks, at two waste water treatment plant
(WWTP)outlets, and at a control site in the MSAR:and 2)determine how the various
sampling locations affected indicators bacteria concentrations in the
watershed. This study has provided data for evaluation of the Santa Ana river
watershed's total maximum daily load management plans that could also be
applicable to other large watersheds with different non point source
pollutants.
