Element 5.5 Promoting Social Justice Activity: Meeting the needs of all students daily Time: 22 hours Artifact: Observation March 16, 2015 Description: My instruction focuses on meeting the needs of students at all levels. In a principal observation, I was rated Highly Effective for demonstrating knowledge of students. To be highly effective means The teacher actively seeks and demonstrates knowledge of students developmental stages, backgrounds, cultures, skills, language proficiency, interests, and special needs from appropriate sources, and attains this knowledge for individual students. Mrs. Miller made the following comments: Mrs. Dettinburn displays full understanding of the age group. She displays extensive knowledge of how students learn and provides a very motivating environment. She is aware of special learning needs of her students and provides appropriate accommodations, as needed ensuring all students have access to learn. Reflection: Individual student needs are a priority in the school environment. One particular student this year really struggled in music class. Though hes too young to be diagnosed, he displays autistic tendencies, and we concluded that perhaps he is very sensitive to music and sounds. Together, the principal, behavior specialist, and I created a motivational/discipline plan for the student. Though not immediately or consistently successful, the student did eventually make strides in his behavior during my class. This of course is just one example of how social justice plays out daily in the classroom.
