D60 UR Line Distance Relay

Protection
The D60 is a microprocessor-based
relay that protects transmission lines
of any voltage level, in three-phase
and single-pole tripping applications.
The D60 offers advanced protection
which includes:

Use the ground distance quadrilateral function of the D60 on

systems with low line impedance
angle or with a high degree of
non-homogeneity on the zerosequence and negative-sequence
equivalent networks. The D60
gives the user a choice between
the zero-sequence, and negative
sequence currents for polarization. Typical applications, in which
this features become very useful,
are low voltage distribution lines,
or underground cables.

Distance

All zones of phase and ground

distance protection are reversible
and individually configurable.

than 5% transient overreach if

capacitive voltage transformers
are used.

Five zones of phase and ground

distance protection are provided.
Both elements can be used as
either dynamic, 10 0% memory
polarized mho or quadrilateral
functions, selected by individual
zones of protection.
Each zone can be set to forward,
reverse or non-directional. Use
the non-directional functionality
of the D60 for back up protection
on bus bars, or as starting signal
for blocking pilot schemes.

Communication-Aided Schemes
Five common types of protection
signaling (pilot) schemes are
available in the D60:
Q Direct Underreach Transfer Trip
(DUTT)
Q Permissive Underreach Transfer
Trip (PUTT)
Q Permissive Overreach Transfer Trip
(POTT)
Q Hybrid Permissive Overreach
Transfer Trip (HYB POTT)
permissive echo and transient
blocking logic incorporated
Q Directional comparison blocking
scheme

The quadrilateral characteristic

uses right and left blinders that
are configurable to its resistive
and angular positions.

All communication-aided schemes

can be programmed for one, two
or four-bit user communications.

Load encroachment characteristics can be configured to

supervise any zone of distance
protection and/or overcurrent
functions.

Both mho and quad functions use

reactance supervision polarized
from the zero-sequence current to
provide extra security during
ground faults on heavily loaded
lines. Additional directional functions are integrated with the basic
distance
comparator s
for
increased directional integrity.
Voltage filtering provides better

Application to SeriesCompensated Lines

The D60 can be safely used on or
near series-compensated lines.
The relay depends on memory
polarization for directional integrity, using an offset on polarizing
voltages for accurate ground

Ground distance protection

compensates for the mutual
coupling effect on parallel lines.
Both self and mutual zerosequence compensating factors are
individually set for each zone.

directional overcurrent functions.

The relay could be set as for a
non-compensated line and an
adaptive mechanism built into
the distance functions would
adjust the reach accordingly to
ensure security despite subsynchronous oscillations and the
effect of series capacitors on the
apparent impedance.

Phase distance protection can be

used to detect faults "behind" any
type of three-phase wye/delta
transformer, allowing application
of the D60 for backup protection
on generators. VTs and CTs could
be installed independently of
each other on either side of the
power transformer. The relay
automatically compensates for
transformer connections, to guarantee accurate reach for any type
of fault.

one, two or four bits of information.

This allows sharing more information between the terminal relays
and improving accuracy of singlepole tripping on cross country
faults. A convenient trip thats function is built-in to coordinate actions
of the key elements of the singlepole tripping package.

Two independent elements monitor

differences in voltage magnitudes,
phase angles and frequencies.
Autoreclosure
A single and three-pole capable
autoreclosure is provided which
simultaneously controls two
breakers and performs sequential
reclosing.

Breaker Failure
Two independent breaker failure
functions are provided using both
current and break er auxiliary
contacts. The function can be
initiated and blocked both internally and externally.

Single-Pole Tripping
The D60 can be applied in a singlepole tripping mode. The relay uses
a state-of-the-art phase selection
algorithm that provides fast and
accurate fault type identification
even under weak-infeed conditions.
The pilot schemes for single-pole
tripping offer an option to send the
permissive/blocking signal using

Monitoring and
Metering

Breaker Arcing Current (I2t)

Monitoring
The D60 tracks the per-phase wear
on the breaker contacts against a
programmable threshold. The
measurement for each phase is
available locally and remotely,
and can be stored in the oscillography file or data logger.
