Element 2.2 Curricular & Instructional School Program Activity: Lesson Writing/Unit Planning Workshop Time: 20 hours Artifact: Yearly Plan Description: This was a professional development opportunity for teachers to have time to write lessons and plan units for their classrooms. It took place for four days over the summer. Reflection: Because our music text series was nearly a quarter-century old when I was hired, I spent a lot of time (and money) acquiring new resources that would provide my students with the excitement and engagement that I desired in my classroom. I copied lessons from the books that I bought to make travel lighter, and for years they ended up in a pile where I searched for them the next year (or made another copy if the one I was looking for wasnt readily accessible). Several years in, I went through my pile and categorized the lessons into grade level binders, only to have my pile return soon after due to not taking the time to re-file them. When this professional development opportunity was announced, I was thrilled! Finally I had the chance to get all my lessons in order! During this workshop, I divided my lessons by grade level and then concept. Next I grouped the lessons into units based on their concept and the county Scope & Sequence. I filed them into grade level binders and from there I began my Yearly Plan. By the end of the workshop, I had a nearly complete plan for the entire year of what I would teach from start to finish. I have a feeling this school year will be a lot easier because of it! I look forward to teaching from my plan and making adjustments as needed to reach my students. I know Ill be constantly finding new ideas and updating it according, but its a wonderful guide nonetheless!
