SOC 304 Data Analysis

Caner Doan, Spring 2016

Email: cdogan@boun.edu.tr

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course consists of two parts. In the first part we will study conventional statistical
techniques used in data analysis. We will start with a quick summary of basic descriptive
statistics, followed by a more rigorous review of topics in inferential statistics, i.e. one
sample, independent samples hypothesis testing, Chi Square and one-way ANOVA. This part
of the course will end with the study of the following topics: Linear Regression, Logistic
Regression, Two-Way ANOVA, and Measuring Association in Crosstabs. For computer
applications we will use SPSS.
The second part of the course focuses on Correspondence and Cluster Analyses, which are
used to explore, detect, and decipher connections and latent relationships in categorical
data sets.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance and participation: Attendance is mandatory. I will also use your in-class participation
performance in final letter grading, particularly if your overall numerical score is close to a letter
grade cutoff.
