"COPED W-BEAM SEAT" --- ANALYSIS

Program Description:
"COPED W-BEAM SEAT" is a spreadsheet program written in MS-Excel for the purpose of analysis of a
shallow coped w-beam seat with a bearing plate.

Program Environment:

Microsoft Office Excel 2003

Creation Date:

Febuary 19th, 2010

Design References:

1. AISC Steel Construction Manual, 13th Ed. ACI 318-05

2. AISC spreadsheet, "AISC_ShapesDatabase_v13.0-Current.xls"

Analysis

1. Revision 1.1 (5/28/10) Added Summary of Design output for user clarification.
Program Assumptions and Limitations:
1. This spreadsheet program is intended to analyze and design a I-Shaped beam that is coped and bearing on
a flat uniform surface. The steel stresses in the modified composite shape connection are calculated. Any
axial loading is not accounted for.
2. Bolt or weld connecting the coped beam to any member is not designed for.
3. This program is valid for AISC W, S, M, and HP shapes.
4. This program does not design / check uplift forces or calculated prying forces on the member.
5. This program assumes that the welding material is E70 material.
6. This program was not intended for the design of the member sizes, but only to design the bearing connection.
7. The deflection of the beam is not considered and must be designed seperately with beam design.
8. This program contains numerous comment boxes which contain a wide variety of information including
explanations of input or output items, equations used, data tables, etc. (Note: presence of a comment box
is denoted by a red triangle in the upper right-hand corner of a cell. Merely move the mouse pointer to the
desired cell to view the contents of that particular "comment box".)

Program Theory and Operation: The top of the spreadsheet screen allows for input of required
information in lightly yellow highlighted boxes. Information required includes the following:

Input:
1. Beam Size: The beam size per AISC available sizes.
2. Beam Yield Strength,Fyb: Steel yield stess of the Beam. Typically is either 36 or 50 ksi.
3. Plate Yield Strength, Fyp: Steel yield stess of the plate. Typically is either 36 or 50 ksi.
4. Reaction Load, R: The unfactored downward vertical load, in kips.
5. Reduced Total Depth, d: Distance from top of beam to bottom of plate seat.
6. Plate Bearing Width, w: The bearing width of the attached plate, in inches.
7. Plate Bearing Length, b: The bearing length of the attached plate, in inches.
8. Coped Distance, c: Distance of cope, in inches.
9. Plate Thickness, t: Thickness, in inches.
10. Thickness of weld, : The size of the fillet weld that connects the plate to the beam.
Output:
All equations are listed adjacent to ouput.
Spreadsheet is protected but w/o password.

1. Calculation of web shear is per Section G2 [Ref. 1].

2. Bearing plate stress is determined assuming uniform load on a cantilevered plate.
3. Plate and top flange stress is determined assuming uniform loading and estimated moment of interia
(not counting beam's camfer at flange and web intersection.)
