Principle of Operation
The Oval Gear meters are positive displacement flow meters where the passage of liquid causes two oval gears to rotate within a
precision measuring chamber and with each rotation a fixed volume of liquid passes through the meter.

Viscous Liquid Behaviour
The viscosity of a liquid is proportional to its resistance to shear. Of the three categories of viscosity (see opposite) Newtonians are most
typical and include petroleum fluids, water and similar chemicals.
Most empirical test data for flow meters and pumps has been developed using Newtonian liquids. When working with Non-Newtonian
liquids we use the expression effective viscosity in terms of the liquid after it has been pre-sheared by the pump and subsequent
movement through the pipe, in these instances it is not unusual for the effective viscosity to be many times less than the theoretical
viscosity thereby lessening the pressure drop across the meter.
Key to viscosity under increasing shear

Pressure Drop Limitations On PD Flow Meters
Positive displacement flow meters are an inexpensive means to accurately
meter high viscosity clean liquids as high as 1 million centipoise however,
the appropriate meter must be sized so that the pressure drop across the
primary measuring elements does not exceed the maximum capability of
either.
Example: For 41-OM025 with a product viscosity of 8000cps
Maximum flowrate L/Min x Multiplier 150L/min x 0.5 = 75L/Min

Keishi Cut Rotors

The Keishi Cut terminology for High Viscosity rotors is a Japanese term.
These high viscosity rotors have every alternate gear tooth on the flat sides
of the oval gear machined to provide pressure relief between the gear
teeth. This can reduce the maximum pressure drop across the meter by
approximately 50%.

Normally the use of high viscosity rotors is when the viscosity is going
to be above 1000cP. When there are cases where even if the normal
operating viscosity is below 1000cP, always consider the minimum
operating temperature.
For Example- At start-up in the middle of winter, as there are so many
places in Australia where the minimum winter temperature can get down
to below 0C or around a minimum of 5C, this will increase the viscosity
of the oil or grease significantly, and this could be well over 1000cP.
Aluminium and PPS Keishi Cut Rotors

Pressure Drop Limit verses Flow Rate

The curves below represent the pressure drop for standard and special cut high viscosity oval rotors at various viscosities. Special cut rotors
have alternate tooth relieved which effectively reduces the pressure drop by 50%. Viscosities are in centipoise and the pressure drop is in
Bar (1 Bar = 14.7psig). When sizing an oval meter for viscous liquids be sure your selection falls on or below the 1 bar maximum allowable
pressure drop line on the graph.

Strainers & Air Eliminators
The modular design of the strainers and optional air eliminator head allow fitment as a stand alone or close coupled strainer only or as a
multi function strainer air eliminator check valve assembly. Wafer back pressure check valves are fitted between the eliminator strainer
(ES) and the flow meter to aid in the extraction of air and prevent any possibility of reverse flow.

Flow Measurement Systems

Flow Meter Calibration
Every flow meter undergoes a check before leaving the factory for correct
operation and function of pulse outputs and ancillary electronics if fitted.
Meters are then compared against a master meter which is traceable to
the Australian National Standards and issued with a calibration report.

Installation Points

PD Meters do not work well with silty or dirty fluids (Use

Strainers before meter)
Straight Pipe not necessary before and after the meter
Teflon Tape can cause rotor stoppages, use loctite thread sealant or
similar
High Velocity flows can cause rotor destruction (Slowly ramp
up flow on start up)
Avoid Water Hammer caused by closing valves quickly in batch
applications
Flush Pipe Lines prior to meter installation

Selecting PD Flow Meters

Positive displacement flow meters are high precision instruments that are made with extremely detailed machined components. Forthis
reason selecting the right flow meter for the application is crucial as incorrect selection can result in damaged components, inaccurate
readings and lengthy and expensive downtime.
There are key questions that must be answered before selecting the components that make up a meter:
WHAT ....

Is the minimum and maximum flow rate? (continuous or Intermittent)

Are the minimum and maximum pressures?
Is the viscosity of the fluid?
Is the fluid being measured (Acid, Resin etc)?
Is the maximum and minimum temperature?
Is the preferred connection type (BSPP, NPT etc)?
Type of display do you require (Mechanical meter, Pulse meter etc)?
Type of output is required (4 digit Mechanical, Pulse output with LCD)?
Type of strainer is required (Particles in the fluid)?

Please refer to the Flow Meter Selection Form on page 27. This form is designed to assist in the selecting the appropriate model
required for the application. Use this form in conjunction with pages 14 to 17.
For further assistance please contact a JSG representative

Dualpulse - Paddle Wheel Flow Meters
General Specifications
DP490 and DP525 are cost effective stainless steel flow meters for measuring
the flow of water, fuels and other low viscosity liquids in pipes sizes 1~100
(40~2500mm).
Insertion flow meters are installed with the metering head inserted into
the pipe resulting in very little pressure drop. They do not require external
power when used with the Flomec rate totalisers however some options
such as high temperature and non-magnetic models require external
power.
Applications include HVAC, hot and chilled water, fire systems, water
distribution (management and treatment), boiler feed water and hydrant
flow testing.

Turbopulse - Small & Large Capacity meters
General Specifications

TM Turbopulse mini and the larger TP Turbopulse turbine series measure

flows of low viscosity liquids from 3 to 7,000,000 L/hr in a range of sizes
from to 20 (6mm~500mm).
The TM mini series have a tangential rotor with integral flow conditioning
ports whilst the TP series have an axial rotor and flow guides, the TP series
needs to be installed in straight sections of pipe either horizontal or vertical
so that the flow is conditioned. The TP series have Exd and Intrinsically Safe
(I.S) approvals.

Incorrect Installations of Flow Meters
The picture to the right shows a large capacity meter that has been installed
on site. Upon close inspection you will see that to the left of this installation
there is ample support for the pipe and meter, but to the right (circled)
section of this installation it has not been supported enough to carry the
weight of the meter. This has resulted in a crack in the flange. For medium
and large capacity meter always provide support as close as possible to the
meter.
Solution: Always provide supports as close as possible to the meter

The next picture shows what will happen to a rotor when the fluid that is
being pumped through does not have a filter. The particles run through
the meter and cause damage to the rotors. This will eventually prevent
the rotors from operating smoothly causing them to seize. This can result
in expensive downtime that could have been avoided by an in expensive
strainer.
Solution: For dirty/unclean fluids always use a filter or strainer

This is a great example of a turbine flow meter that has been installed with
absolutely no flow-conditioning. In order for the meter to provide accurate
results the flow in the pipe must be laminar and therefore a measured
straight run (x10 pipe diameter) must installed before and after the meter.
When installing turbine flow meters and paddlewheel (insertion meters),
flow conditioning is crucial to obtain a steady smooth laminar flow for
accurate readings.
Solution: Calculate and install meter with appropriate straight run either
side of the meter (Turbo pulse and paddle wheel meters only)

To the right you will see a large capacity meter being installed on its back.
The bearings installed have a small amount either side of the rotor to provide
a very small thrust gap. This is crucial for smooth operation. When laying
on its back the weight of the rotors close this gap and eventually have the
rotors spinning against the body of the meter. The rotor will eventually wear
away against the body and seize as it will no longer spin.
Solution: Always position the meter facing perpendicular to the ground

If at any time you are uncertain of how to install a meter please contact
your JSG representative.
