Lawyers are looked up highly by the society because they
know the laws of the land, talk about laws, and preach the laws. Lawyers are expected to set as examples by observing and upholding the laws. They are the advocates of justice. However, as the saying goes no one is perfect, it is true to all individuals who are of different professions. Lawyers are not exempted. Even advocates of justice, there some who would do unjust and disgraceful acts which taints the purity of the profession. Aside from the canons and standards of law stated, there still some unjust acts to come and be encountered by the future lawyers. Here are some that I have anticipated: A lawyer, with his legal expertise and knowledge, is being sought by a big syndicate in order to avoid execution of the law while they do their evil deeds freely. A law professor (a lawyer himself) is being bribed by the affluent parents of a law student to give a high passing mark in the grades of the latter. A judge of court demands from the lawyer or the client to give him a certain amount of money or any valuable objects so that he will give a decision favourable to the side of the said lawyer or client. A lawyer using his legal knowledge to the prejudice of others or to take advantage of the others especially those who are of low or no educational background. These are just some of the anticipated obstacles to be encountered by the future lawyers. If I am the lawyer, in those first three instances, I would resist it because in common sense, those are morally wrong. Even if I receive threats against me or my family, there are ways in which I or my family could be protected. I could ask from the authorities for protection or I could seek help from the Integrated Bar of the Philippines on such matters. As to the last instance, well, theres no reason for lawyers to do it because, as advocates of justice, they should promote justice and not injustice. Lawyers should live morally upright not just because there are canons and standards which are to be followed, but it is the right thing to do. Even ordinary persons know it.
