Abstract

This paper will briefly discuss an outline of a five-year time line that

addresses various courses, seminars, conferences and professional goals. These

professional development activities have been specifically targeted to enhance my
abilities as a qualified educator. Each benchmark is evidence of professionalism and
excellence for future reference. Additionally, a general summary justifying my fiveyear plan will be given. This paper will conclude with a brief reflection upon my
journey thus far as an educator.

LOOKING FORWARD

Initially, it is my intention to complete the Master of Education program at

National University. This should be accomplished no later than the end of

September 2016. Upon completion of this goal, the next benchmark that I would
seek in my professional career as an educator shall be to meet the Nevada Educator
Performance Framework evaluation with a minimum score of 3.0. This will be the
first obstacle in my professional plan. I have struggled with meeting the NEPF
standards for the 2015-16 school year and have sought out several different
resources in order to resolve this issue.

After meeting the first benchmark, it is my intention to continue building

upon my abilities by attending the 2017 AVID Summer Institute. AVIDs mission is
to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and
success in a global society (AVID.org, 2016). By attending this conference, I believe
that I would be able to gain invaluable strategies and further build the necessary
skills for improving my abilities as an educator. After attending this conference, I
would seek to successfully complete the PRAXIS Principles of Learning and
Teaching exam (PLT exam). This is a necessary step in my plan as it is also a
requirement established by the Nevada Department of Education.

During the summer of 2018, I will seek to successfully complete the Parental

Engagement and Family Involvement course at National University. Again, while

this course is a requirement established by the NVDOE, it would also be a very
beneficial course to complete. Research suggests that students that have families

which are involved with school activities, or are involved with the education
processes and are in communication with teachers, are more likely to succeed
academically and have less behavior issues in the classroom (Marzano, 2007).

In 2019, assuming that all other goals have been met, it would be my

intention to collect subject endorsements for history and music. I greatly enjoy
these two subjects and believe that it would benefit my students to have a teacher
that enjoys what he teaches. It would also be my goal to attend the iNACOL Blended
and Online Learning Symposium that year. After having accomplished all of the
above-mentioned goals, I would finally attempt to become and national board
certified teacher.

These goals have been constructed and designed with the utmost

earnestness and good intention. However, I must be practical and seek to

accomplish the primary goals that I have set for myself first. It is of utmost
importance that I establish myself as an effective teacher in Clark County. While
having a five year plan is essential toward building and strengthening my career, I
must first build and strengthen myself as a teacher. Having come this far in my
teaching program has brought me very near to this goal, but there are still a few
obstacles that I must overcome. Primarily, I must successfully implement the skills
that I have learned about in my coursework in order to pass my probation period as
a teacher. However, this should not be very difficult as I believe that as long as I
continue to learn, build, practice and develop myself as an educator, through time, I
will be able to maintain an effective practice.
