Dear parents and guardians:

Welcome to a new school year at
Summer Street Public School! I
would like to take this opportunity
to increase your understanding of
how planning and assessment
work together, as well as outlining
how you will be kept informed
about your childs progress.

Assessment
Three Principles:
The practices and procedures of
my assessments will

be fair, transparent, and

equitable for all students

support all students and

their needs

provide ongoing
descriptive feedback

Three Types:
Your children will be assessed in
three different ways to help
improve and report on student
learning.
Assessment for Learning: will
reveal where the learners are in
their learning, where they need to
go, and how best to get there
Assessment as Learning: will
foster the development of student
self-assessment to identify areas of
strength and need
Assessment of Learning: evaluates
student learning which results in
the statements and grades
reported

Keeping You Informed

Planning for all units of study will

begin with the end in mind! The
sequence of planning assessments
and instructional strategies will
follow this process:

To enrich students learning

experiences and form strong
partnerships with parents, it is
essential that regular
communication between parents
and teachers is established. Here
are the following ways in which I
will inform you of your childs
progress:

1) What are the big ideas set out

in the curriculum?
2) What evidence will demonstrate
understanding of the big ideas?

Assessments of Learning

3) What are the knowledge and

skills my students need in order to
demonstrate understanding of the
big ideas?

We want to
avoid this
