CROTALUS HORRIDUS
Leading symptoms

and lightning. They are very sympathetic. They can probably do without company. Croth. is not very aggressive. They are generally submitted to a strong person. [Mangialavori]
OR: Aversion to family members.

A combination of the two is that they feel they must help, but actually do not want to. In
that case, the family is seen as a duty they can't avoid. The sense of persecution then
issues from the idea that they are obliged to be social and maintain family contact.

"With Lachesis the loquacity is so rapid that if any one in the room commences to tell
something, the patient will take it up and finish the story, though he has never heard about
it. No one is permitted to finish a story in the presence of a Lachesis patient. Crotalus
does that too, but he will take it up and mumble, and jumble and stumble over his
words ... a low passive state like intoxication; in Lachesis it is wild excitement." [Tyler]

trying to escape, which is a feature of Crot-h. behaviour." [Blackie]
Dreams of dead people during [septic] throat inflammations.
M Irritability.
"Crotalus patients are mentally very snappish and irritable. They are so ugly in their
temperament that they greatly resemble Nux-v.; only in Nux-v. the same degraded state of
vitality as in Crotalus is wanting. They get almost furious at the slightest annoyance."
[Choudhuri]
Yet less aggressive than Lachesis.

coloured." [Jahr]

and Naja. I find Crotalus magnificent when they complain of the feeling as though
something were going to burst under the sternum, particularly if they say, 'It feels so full

his own resources, either deliberately, as he repels every attempt of sympathy and

love, sympathy and communion with others are longed for; yet an inner command, as it
were, forbids their acceptance [emotional, hysterical, full of tears, craves sympathy,
hidden grief, crying in secrecy, etc.] and urges him on to find the source of strength

Staphysagria
Shri N.S. P., aged 30 years, consulted me on 10th July 1959 for the following:
10 years back he had red patches on body and he consulted a doctor who diagnosed it
wrongly as leprosy. Later on he was examined in the leprosy hospital and the possibility
of the disease was excluded. He was hypersexual but was getting quick ejaculation. His
wife had an aversion for sex, so she went away to her parents, and later committed
suicide. This gave him a shock and he also felt ashamed. Later on he developed a
syphilitic ulcer which was treated with allopathic medicines.
Now his body remains cold; he gets tingling in extremities. Feels numbness and
weakness in left leg. Feels as if bitten by mosquitoes and bugs. Gets burning, stitching,
stinging, etc., in the penis which spreads all over the body. Has great sexual desire but has
to suppress it. Gets throbbing in different places, here and there. Is sensitive to both heat
and cold. The skin of soles is thickened and gets cracked. Is very irritable and abusive;
fights with and insults his superiors. Cannot bear insults. Is fearsome; fears he may be
knocked down by a cycle. Gets startled by noises. Feels lonely. Has poor memory.
Shivers during micturition and stool.
His case was repertorized in Boger's Synoptic Key as follows:
Here and there (p. 38) + Male organs (p. 84) = Aur., Graph., Lyc., Rhust-t, Staph.,
Sulph., Thu.
+ Anger (i.e. Quarrelsome) (p. 49) = Aur., Lyc., Staph., Sulph.
Considering that there was sexual excitement with suppressed sex desire, h/o grief,
quarrelsomeness, oversensitiveness, etc., I selected Staph. out of these remedies, and
gave Staph. 1M, 3 doses in one day and placebo.
16.09.59 : Reported that his condition was much better for 2 months. Most of his
complaints subsided completely and remained that way. But for the last fortnight or so,

he feels the recurrence of symptoms. Staph. 10M, 3 doses thrice in one day was given,
followed by placebo.
The patient reported some time later that he was feeling completely well.

MAN, 59 YEARS OLD
This case is one of the most difficult, not difficult, but important cases I had. PCP is
one of the most difficult diseases. You have to be very sure of your remedy, because
there is only a slow amelioration. Second, usually these people have had a lot of
allopathic remedies. They have had Cortisone and other medicines, also this man,
before they come to your consultation with swollen joints all over their body - the
knees, the ankles, the fingers and so on. If you give such a patient the wrong remedy,
he will suffer and suffer for years. If you give the right remedy, they will suffer
much more but for a limited period of about one year. So, you are in a difficult
situation.
If those people are working, they have to work to get money, it is not possible for
them to hold on to your treatment and there you are loosing your patients.
But first of all, you have to be sure of the prescription of your remedy, and when
you are sure, you can expect a total cure, when the people are not too old. But also in
elder people of 65 years old I have seen PCP-cases, who have become very well. That
was another remedy, Tuberculinum.
But this man is totally cured. Everything started about 1982.
A: In 1982 you came here with PCP. You already had complaints with the joints for
quite a long time and you got Cortisone regularly.
P: Yes, already since two years.
Do you observe what he does the whole time (he licks his lips)? You will see it often.
A: Then you came with ischias and for the acute ischias I gave you Rhus
toxicodendron M and it has improved spectacularly.
P: It has improved very well within a few days. I had it on the left side behind my
hips and the pains were very strong. Then, I got the remedy, the next day it was
much worse and afterwards I could walk and two days later I could go upstairs
again.
A: Then you believed in Homoeopathy.
P: Yes, when it cured so quickly.
A: You said to yourself that this thing had to work, because 1982 was a period in
which everybody laughed at the globuli. I started in 1979 with Homoeopathy, but at
that time everybody was very sceptic and critic. These times are passed now.
P: In fact, that was the result of the remedy that I got from you for the ischias. You
told me: "Absolutely no other remedies!" I followed your advice. When I took the

remedy for the ischias, all the other complaints returned, from which I have suffered
for two years, but which have been suppressed by Cortisone and painkilling
remedies. So, when the ischias had disappeared, the arthritis returned to a certain
amount. I got one problem after the other.
A: Your acute problem disappeared and your chronic returned.
P: It appeared very strongly.
He has a certain way of talking like: "I am sure what I am telling you."
If you hear Lycopodium talking, it is something else. You feel a kind of uncertainty;
but here, he is straight, he is sure.
When you ask him something, he says that all the complaints have returned,
because he took the remedy. He knew it, I explained it before, but you will see it
later in the consultation, that he starts talking, talking, talking and makes big
speeches: "This is the theory, and that is because of this or that." You will see it.
Then something else: when you scratch with a remedy at the top of an iceberg, then
the iceberg itself appears, and that is the danger for Homoeopathy. When you do not
put the second step right, you are lost. How often do we see when we have given a
remedy - I remember two cases. She came with sadness and things like that and got
Natrum muriaticum. Afterwards one eye suddenly became red, was swollen, it was
very red and infected, very painful and the pain was extending to the back. Which
remedy is this? Complementary to Natrum muriaticum? Which remedy did we
give? Apis. And Apis did something. Afterwards, other complaints appeared, again
other complaints, again the eye, again complaints here and there. You start asking
yourself, whether it might be a tumor or a glaucoma, because of the dilation of the
pupil. You think about it and maybe you give Prunus spinosa, because the pain is
extending to the back. And it goes on this way, until you make the right step and
recognize that it is Tuberculinum. Then we gave Tuberculinum and everything
became all right.
But everything started, because you gave Natrum muriaticum. Yes, it was the right
remedy, because she had a grief and things like that, and only because she has had
Natrum muriaticum she has the energy to produce Apis symptoms, a clear Apis
picture, but these symptoms were only a part of the whole.
By giving a remedy you give energy. New symptoms are developed and they ask to
be cured totally. You have to give the right remedy that covers all the symptoms. Do
not forget that "all the symptoms" does not only mean "all the symptoms at a
certain moment", but means "all the symptoms of one year ago, or 6 months ago, or
3 months ago", because this changeable state is typical for Tuberculinum. You may
not only take all the symptoms which are there during one month, but you also have
to take the symptoms which have been there a few months ago or a year ago. "The
totality of the symptoms" means also "the totality within several years."
When you take the symptoms of only one moment, today you will give Apis for the
eye, tomorrow another remedy for the knee, maybe Pulsatilla. When it is first the
right knee and then the left: Lycopodium. After Lycopodium Pulsatilla, because she
cried a little bit at the consultation, and after Pulsatilla another complementary
remedy, maybe Silicea, because she is so chilly and the nails break easily and so on.
We do so, because we do not see the whole picture of the case.

Now, in this case he got Rhus toxicodendron because of the left-sided ischias, that
was clearly Rhus toxicodendron. It was a beautiful reaction.
Up to that moment he was still taking Cortisone and then he believed that
Homoeopathy really acts: "My God, this little tablet really does something, because
after one day I could walk again." Then, the big story comes. The rheumatism
which has been suppressed with Cortisone for many years appeared more strongly
than before. Then it is up to you to give the right remedy.
In this case you will see which remedy he needs only on the mental picture.
A: Then I said to stop the Cortisone and that was of course an indication to cure
you completely at last.
P: Yes.
A: You got arthritic complaints in all your joints. How did it start? How did it
develop?
P: Yes, in all the joints. First of all, it began with thick feet; while driving a car,
when standing for a long time, when the ankles are burdened too much. That's how
it started and then I got it in my hands. I got thick hands. The rings on my fingers
were pressing very much. Swollen joints, thick knotty fingers. Then I got thick joints
of the hands, elbows, the joints of the shoulders didn't function anymore and thick
joints of the knees. It went from downwards to upwards and at the end from the
hands back...
The only thing I can say, I hardly have had complaints in my hip; a little, only a
little, but for the rest I have had complaints in all my joints.
A: So, it was difficult for you to stand. That's how it started?
P: Yes, yes. I had pain in all my joints. Then it extended to my knees, and from my
fingertips to the shoulders.
Which remedy do we think of when it starts in the ankle and if we think it is an
ascending rheumatism? Ledum. Does everyone know the rubric for Ledum? Look
at "extremities, pain, foot, extending upward" (p. 1079, General p. 896): Dirca
palustris, Drosera, Ferrum iodatum, Ledum as capital remedy. Ledum is a very
important remedy in gout, mostly in the big toe. When the toe is thick, red, swollen,
and is very painful, they have to put their foot in cold water, it improves. And what
do they do when they lie in bed? They put their feet out of the covers or put a
cardboard box above their feet which are covered up, so that the covers can not
touch the feet, because they are so sensitive to touch.
Natrum muriaticum is very important, when it has been preceded by a deep grief.
In Natrum muriaticum you almost find always a very deep, emotional grief.
Nitricum acidum, Nux vomica, Plumbum, Silicea and Sulphur. What does
Plumbum do when he has pain in his foot? He has also pain at night and rubs his
foot constantly. Rubbing ameliorates in Plumbum.
Nitricum acidum has a peculiar kind of pain, a stitching pain, a splinter pain.
A: You could only walk with difficulty.
P: I had a period, in which I hardly could walk. It became worse. I had to lie in bed.
One month it was so bad that I needed a strong person at home who helped me to go
to the toilet.
I couldn't put on my socks and clothes; I had difficulties in eating because of my
hands, I didn't have feeling anymore and I couldn't hold the cutlery. The joints of

my elbow were so swollen and painful, that I couldn't put on my clothes myself. I
couldn't wash myself or comb my hair. Then I have lain in bed, because there was
no other possibility.
I had to repeat the remedy. I have given him Rhus toxicodendron only once, then
his constitutional remedy, I had to repeat it.
In PCP it is very difficult to recognize, when you have to repeat. At the moment
there is a big discussion about repeating the remedy in the homoeopathic world. In
our center we have seen that you can not do damage when you repeat the remedy,
even when it is a beginning relapse, if the patient still needs the same remedy. It is
another question when the patient develops to another remedy. Then you have an
aggravation of the symptoms, they become better, but the original symptoms are as
bad as before. It can be for example, that someone develops from Calcarea to
Lycopodium, you repeat Calcarea and there is an aggravation, but no amelioration.
Or a patient who has been cured with Sepia and comes in a situation of grief. If you
repeat Sepia, all the old symptoms appear again, disappear again, but the
symptoms, which have been developed because of the grief, are still there. Then you
have to give Ignatia.
In this case I repeated the remedy a few times, maybe ten times in two years. It is no
problem to repeat the remedy, but there is no reason to repeat when the patient is
better. Then you can wait, wait and wait and give him Sac-lac., one year, two years
Sac-lac.
P: At the beginning I was really depressed, whether it would become all right. There
was no amelioration, it became always worse; also on account of the confinement to
bed and its disadvantageous consequences for my work and so on. I had to arrange
things in bed. I really had periods where I only saw black before my eyes. Fellowlodgers and friends have helped me and said: "Then take your normal medicines
again." You cured me from my ischias and I said: "When I say A, I also say B," and
now I have to go on with this. No matter how it looks, I have to go on. And
fortunately, I have persisted.
Do you observe the way he behaves? He is decently dressed, wears a tie, he is very
polite and often licks his lips. Where can we find this in the Repertory? "Mouth,
motion of the tongue, lapping, to and fro" (p. 407; General p. 345): Cuprum,
Hyoscyamus, Lachesis and Sulphur.
He moves his tongue shortly to and fro, like a snake. Lachesis is also in the rubric
and another, also very talkative and jealous remedy, which we often change with
Lachesis, namely Hyoscyamus. Then there is also Cuprum which is a remedy in
epilepsy and cramps. What does it mean that he always licks his lips with his
tongue? That he takes a kind of position. The way he sits there, he plays theatre,
very polite, very serious: "I am a very important man." It is very important to
observe the behaviour and the gesticulation of the patient. I assure you that I
prescribe this remedy in 80% only on account of my feelings and some key-notes.
You also have to do it this way, if you do not do so, you miss the remedy in 50% of
the cases. It is a remedy that has to be prescribed most of all the other remedies, but
you miss it, one after the other. It happened to me once.
A: With the help of the characteristics of pain it was impossible to find the remedy.
It was hurting the whole time. When you moved,...

P: Always.
A: Especially in motion. But the pains didn't particularly indicate a homoeopathic
remedy. You had a particular character. You are a little bit a philosopher?
P: Yes, you can call it this way. I can brood on something, but still follow the way I
have taken first.
A: You are also the best in your profession?
P: Yes.
A: I think you are "a carrossier".
P: Yes, that is a French word, I am a coach-work man.
A: Yes, that is the right word.
P: A little too long.
That is very interesting. I say to him that he is "a carrossier" and he corrects me
and says the right word for his profession. He corrects me, that is remarkable.
Besides, he behaves this way the whole time (like a cock with a swollen breast).
A: I know that there is no better coach-work man in the whole neighbour. Other
people told me that you work very accurately.
P: Yes.
This remedy is sure, that he knows it and he is sure that he is the best. He thinks of
himself: "I am the best and what you tell me, I don't believe, because I know it
better."
How can we describe his way? How can we find this in the Repertory? He is
haughty, but it is a refined way of haughtiness (p. 51; General p. 41).
Besides you can see, that he is playing a kind of theatre. This kind of playing theatre
already shows me the remedy; even in depressions and grief they act this way. You
notice that the grief does not come from deep. "Oh, my God, doctor, I lost my
husband and now my son wants to go in the monastery. Oh, I am suffering so much,
doctor!" But you see that it does not come from the heart, but rather from the head.
You also often see that they use clichs.
Alright, in "haughtiness" we see three remedies: Lycopodium, Platinum and
Sulphur. Platinum comes in, wears a hat and the tie is decently: "Doctor, how are
you? I see, you are very well." "Yes, I am very well, but..." "Yes, yes, you work too
much, I think, you work too much. You are tired. Lately, you look bad. Well, may I
take a seat?" "Yes, sit down" - that is Platinum. They come in and overwhelm you
with their being. They do not tell you their problem, they come in and ask how you
are - "you look ill, doctor", to whom they come with their problems. Another man
came in and called me with my first name. Then he said: "You know, I am an
engineer" "Ah, you are an engineer, what kind of engineer?" "Brewery engineer."
But someone else told me that he was just an ordinary man, who learned how to
brew beer. There are no engineers at the breweries, but he called himself an
engineer. These people lie and exaggerate. This patient does not do this, he does it in
a more refined way.
A: Indeed. In your job you are the best.
P: I don't want to say it of myself, but I assume it.
A: But you also want to be the best.

P: I want to be the best in everything I have in mind to do. I have done so many
things in my life. I also know all kinds of sports. I tried in everything I started to be
one of the best or the best. Whether it is in the coach-work, or in the leather branch
or in the machinery. I know both jobs. So car manufacturer. I am responsible for a
lot of tasks: How does this look? How is it manufactured? How should this be or
that? At the moment I am in an Oldtimer-Club, where they always rely on my
knowledge, because they know me personally, and say: "Choose one for me."
Because they know that I am one of the qualified persons. Whatever I started or
learned in life, I have always tried to belong to the best.
A: And the result is that you are the best in your job, as I experienced it. Maybe
there is somewhere a better, but I don't know any in the neighbourhood.
That is exactly what Vithoulkas says about this remedy: "They want to be the
best."
He also says: "When I start with something, I want to end it properly." But he only
works when he likes to work, when he is in a good condition. When he has enough
money, he stops working, he is driving with the car and drinking beer in a pub, and
talking, talking and talking with other garagists. He is only living for himself, he is
making his own life. That is why I say that this remedy is an egoistic remedy, but not
an avarice remedy. The difference between egoistic and avarice is not simple, but
someone is avarice when someone wants more than he needs - like which remedy?
Arsenicum. Arsenicum is the most important avarice remedy. But this remedy is
egoistic, he only does what he wants to do. And he likes to sit somewhere and to snap
his fingers: "Bring me a cup of coffee!", or "Bring my slippers" - really lazy and
egoistic.
A: You are characterized: you have to go to this man with a car, but he only works
when he wants to work.
P: Yes.
A: ...when the muse are there. Some poets can only make poems when they have
inspiration.
P: Yes, yes.
A: The artists can only create when the muses are there. Apparently, it is the same
with you.
P: Yes, exactly.
A: Describe it.
What I do is the following: "...you know everything and you are a good man and
you have a good knowledge and you are the best and so on", to get him out of his
shell and to show, how he reacts. And he: "Yes, really, I am the best and I know
exactly where to knock with the hammer."
P: Previously, I said that I have done several things in my life and I always wanted
to be one of the best. Regularly, I get very difficult tasks. I prefer not to accomplish
a normal, little task, I leave it for others. I want the most difficult, the impossible
task, but that requires inspiration, or a study of the object.
Do you hear how he expresses himself? "The study of an object" - no garagist will
use such words. They say: "That is a starter and that is a..." They call it by name.
But he says: "The study of the object." These are clichs.

P: Then, I have a certain plan in my head, it has to be made this or that way. I often
fight hours for one millimeter, because when I repair something I think it concerns
human lives. I have an enormous responsibility in my job, so on the automobile
level. When something is wry for one millimeter or even half a millimeter, I work for
hours to put it right.
He says that he has a big responsibility, but you feel that this responsibility does not
come from the heart, because then he would work, work and work, but he only
works when he likes to work.
He is indifferent towards the welfare of others, he only cares about his own good
feeling, his own theorizing, his own world. He does not really care about other
people at all, in the depth, as you see in Phosphorus, Causticum, Pulsatilla or even
Arsenicum or Baryta carbonica. He can be anxious about others, but the reason for
this anxiety is himself: when my wife dies in a car accident, who will prepare my
meals? In the depth he is indifferent to the welfare of others. "Indifference to the
welfare of others" (p. 55; General p. 44).
Second, these people say they have suffered very much, because their wife or their
father died. "You have suffered?" "Oh yes, I suffered a lot, I really suffered a lot."
They express it in this way. Someone else, for example, Ignatia would only sigh
deeply, or Natrum muriaticum would sit there quietly, seriously and closed: "Yes,
doctor, but I can not talk about it."
But this person, he plays theatre, you feel it, when he sits in front of you. Therefore,
you often prescribe a wrong remedy, a grief remedy, because everything started
after a grief.
But the causation on the emotional level with this remedy is embarrassment. When
you humiliate these people, they can suffer.
P: Sometimes I don't succeed. Then I just don't have the right inspiration. From my
experience I switch to something else, I go into the garden or to another garagist and
we have a little chat. After half an hour, or an hour I go back and knock on the head.
A: You see it from a rational point of view, but in fact you are a person who does
what he wants.
P: I prefer so, yes.
A: No, no, everybody wants to do it this way, but you really do so.
P: Yes, yes.
A: In fact you are a maniac in your profession. We know that. You are entirely
wrapped up in your work, but at a certain moment you say, alright...
You don't care much when people say: "The car has to be ready then or then." It
doesn't interest you at all.
P: No, not at all. But when I am in condition, I might be working day and night at
the car. I can also work very late, because in the evening it is quiet, there is not so
much distraction. When I'm busy with my work, I have to concentrate for 100%.
A: They have to leave you in peace?
P: They have to leave me in peace and then I can accomplish the most difficult
tasks, but beside I must think as little as possible. And when there is distraction, also
from outside, then I have a little problems.
A: Because you keep thinking of it. When you are talking with others about politics
and so on...

P: To say it exactly, I think about next week.

A: Yes, yes, but I want to say, about every thing they talk with you, you are talking
and don't like to work anymore, then you go into another direction.
P: I try to go into another direction. Honestly, in previous years I have made a habit
of it. At a certain moment I might have some problems, I can brood on it, but it
doesn't give a solution. When I take another direction, do something else, talk about
another issue and afterwards return to the first subject, I found a solution.
A: Yes, yes. You are also rather a critic person?
P: Yes. Very critic. Every screw has to be in the right place. When I have to examine
such an Oldtimer - and they like it, also in Brussels, but they also examine it exactly.
One screw not in the right place, two, three millimeter wrong... They say: "Try the
car, what do you think?"
If you go to this man with a car, which has been repaired by another garagist, he
would surely say that it has not been done right. He is very, very critic.
These people come from another doctor or specialist and start talking behind his
back; they are very censorious.
Where can we find this? "Censorious" (p. 10), two capital remedies: Sulphur and
Arsenicum. For Arsenicum it is not easy good enough. When Arsenicum buys
something it has to be completely all right; when there is only a small spot, he will
not take it anymore. For Arsenicum everything has to be 100% all right. Besides, he
must think about the price before, because surely it will be too expensive. He will
turn it 20 times and look very carefully before he buys.
He is also very critic towards other people, it is never good enough, because he is
the best.
P: You can judge the car like everyone would do, or as an expert. Then, I have to
bring critic things into prominence. I search for things about which you don't care
at first. A car can be very beautiful for me, but in general there is always something
wrong. If there wouldn't be anything wrong, we would have the perfection.
A: You don't always do what other people say?
P: No.
A: Can you strike a person a blow?
P: I could previously. I can put up with a great deal, I mean, they can tap on my
toes, as long as they don't tap on my big toe, because when someone taps on my big
toe, I tap back. I can fight with someone. I know, and afterwards I am ashamed.
Whether in public or not, it doesn't interest me. Once said and over. It doesn't last
half an hour with me.
A: All right. There are also periods that you don't like to work.
P: Yes, there are. When there are too many problems, I am not at ease. Then there
are difficult objects and I don't have inspiration and I don't know how I should
solve it. Then, two things are fighting: that I am rather precisely and demand
responsibility of myself. When there is a certain object which is rather difficult,
when I have to adjust the coach-work to manufacture rules, it asks capacity, time
and thinking. When I have several problems from outside - that might be several
things - I can't find the right way, to start and because of my responsibility I don't
do it.

Do you see how he is playing theatre? He says that he often has problems, because
the tasks are too difficult, because I asked him whether there are times in his life
that he does not work at all. "Yes, I don't have the right spirit and too many
problems" and so on. No, it is because he is just too lazy. He only works when he has
the muse for it. Do you know what the muse is? It is the inspiration from the cosmos.
When it comes, he feels well and works, but when he does not feel well he takes his
car, drives to another garagist and drinks a beer with him and talks, talks, and talks,
and theorizes with him.
Later in the consultation you will see how he says: "I have the intention to build a
car for my grandson, a little car, with everything on it." You see, he makes plans.
"But I don't have the time to do all this, because I have to do this and that", so only
theorising and making plans.
P: Then I would make mistakes which I regret afterwards. In my life I have
repaired thousand difficult cases.
Do you see how he is lying: thousand difficult cases - one difficult case lasts 6
months, and with thousand difficult cases it means that he lives for 500 years, and
that is impossible.
Do you understand how he lies, how he exaggerates, which theatre he plays?
P: Whether it concerns this or that, even when the car has been under a train, it
doesn't make any difference to me. I only need the manufacture information, then I
can build the car again. I calculate the coach-work and the bearing-power, the heart
of the car, the middle of all the things which have to be correct. And when the car usually it is an expensive make, otherwise it is not worth while - when I have
repaired the car and someone drives that car I have to be sure that this car is 100%
sure. There are certain influences which play a role. I say again: "I have had
hundreds or thousands difficult cases and I haven't got back any.
Do you believe that he really calculates the coach-work and the bearing-power and
all these things? No, he does not count anything at all. The only thing he counts is
his money. He tells us how much he works, that he calculates this and that, but he
does not do it. These people work very hard, mental work, they think and indeed,
for this reason they do not work at all, they are lazy. They think too much, they
speculate too much, they theorize and therefore they do not work. They can sit with
someone in a pub, drinking beer and talking about politics and other things until 3
a.m.
That is a remedy for Northern Ireland. When you go there people with great beards
are sitting there, they are talking and drinking the whole time. They do not have
money, but they drink and have it put on an account.
In this patient you do not see what Kent writes about the remedy. Kent describes it
as a man whom I saw this morning in the underground. He was sitting on the floor
with a great beard, his hair was not washed, a cigarette in his mouth and there was a
bottle of beer behind him, at 9 o'clock in the morning! He did not wear socks and he
was very dirty.
Kent describes the remedy this way, but with this description you will never think
of the remedy when you see this man. He is a refined Sulphur type. He theorizes the
whole time and tells how much he works and how much he knows and that he is the
best, all the elements are there, but they are hidden, you do not see them clearly,

until you listen very carefully and thinks about his behaviour. Then you recognize
the real Sulphur type.
Some Sulphur people do not care about their appearance. You know the rubric
"indifference personal appearance" (p. 55): one capital remedy: Sulphur.
Sulphur has a fine nose, a very good sense of smell, he smells himself. When he goes
to the toilet and afterwards washes himself very profoundly, nevertheless he would
smell his stool. They have a very fine nose and that is the reason why Sulphur
women use so much perfume and make-up. In women with strongly make-up eyes
and who use very much make-up in general, first you have to think of Sulphur. They
smell their own body and to conceal that, because they think that other people will
smell their perspiration, they use all kinds of possible perfumes.
A: It was remarkable: you have been unable to work for a complete year. I had the
opportunity to treat you - I'm very grateful for that - and I have done it to prove
that you can be cured with homoeopathic remedies. I visited at your home several
times, wrote letters for the mutuality, and have remitted your treatment payments. I
didn't care how much it would cost, I knew he would make it. This person is
relatively young and my remedy is correct, so he has to get healthy again.
That was in 1982 and at that time I had to prove myself and Homoeopathy and at
that time he has wrapped me around his finger.
At that time he came and said that he did not have money anymore, that he even
could not pay the heating. He has a large house and a lot of money, but he sat there
at a small fire, his wife also. His wife uses a lot of make-up. You smell her from 2
metres distance when she is coming. She came for flushes of heat and like she is, it is
the same constitutional remedy he needs. Both play the same theatre.
And I, who was only thinking of Homoeopathy at that time, said that I had to cure
this man and I was absolutely sure of my remedy, but he deprived me of the
opportunity to cure him. Because what did he say? He said: "I haven't worked for
almost one year, now I don't have money anymore, I don't even have money to pay
the heating." And what did I do? I begged him not to go to the hospital or to another
doctor and I gave him money so that he could pay the heating and buy something to
eat. Within one year I gave him between 700 and 800 and nobody knew.
Do you see how egoistic this man is? He puts me in a situation where I did not
discover that this was his way of acting to get more money for himself.
After he was cured my technician sent our little car that has had a small accident to
him to repair it. For maybe twenty minutes he worked at the car he desired 50 . He
let me pay. I did not say anything, I have to pay everywhere, but it indicates his
character, his egoism.
And previously he complained: "Doctor, I don't have money", and this and that
and you walk into the trap and then you pay and give him money, because you think
that they have to be cured. It is the same with Lycopodium people. They also wrap
you around your finger, exactly the same as he does.
A: But it was remarkable, and I don't know whether it is a characteristic, that you
are anxious about poverty?
P: Yes.
A: Does it mean a lot to you?

P: In a certain way yes. I come of a good family. They also had an independent
profession. There are quite a lot of independents in my family, but more businesses.
It is typical for my family. Therefore I also choose an independent profession. In a
way ... yes... you live in a certain style which you are used to, and then fall back to
poverty... Then I try to survive with all kinds of means, to make sure that nobody
will notice it. There are so many little tricks. Even when you can afford you less, it
must not mean that you are worth less or that you must dress yourself worse.
A: You don't do that?
P: No.
A: You like to be well-dressed, I thought.
P: Yes, I also like people who look decently. So, nothing with punk and so on. I like
decent people.
A: You also like to drive a nice car?
P: Yes, my whole life long. A car that might be seen. It might be exaggerated, but
not an old car, then I prefer none, or a bicycle or by foot.
A: You can discuss for hours, also when you come here?
P: Yes, hours and hours. Discuss and talk about certain things. Once I held a lecture
about the art of waiting an oldtimer in the culture centre. They asked me: "Can you
talk about that issue for three hours, do you have enough material for that?" So the
whole project... I started to talk about that at 8 o'clock in the evening. I explained
certain things and at half past 10 they were still asking questions. I continued,
although they all looked at their watch. It was after half past eleven. It was a
splendid evening. No one left before I finished. I could go on for hours about one
issue. Maybe a little too long, but...
A: Do you have certain fears? Things, about which you worry? When I was at your
home I had the impression that you were a little worried about your wife and
children.
P: Yes, for persons about whom I care. It has nothing to do with my own family. It
also might be strangers, a good friend, an acquaintance and so on, a person whom I
like. Yes, at that moment I can be very depressive. When something happens to
people whom I know well and who know me well, whom you sympathize with, it
strikes me.
A: Is it a certain anxiety that something might happen?
P: No, I don't think so.
A: When your wife or one of your children is ill, I think I noticed that you are
worried about them?
P: Well, anxious, I don't know... I want to help in a way.
A: Does it mean there is a kind of connection with the person? That you are overconcerned? Or worried?
P: I don't worry. Internally, I am worried, and then it reaches a certain point. But
externally, I don't show it. When I have certain worries or pains, it remains
internally. I show it other people as less as possible, also not my wife. She does not
have to know that I feel bad.
A: Wait, we are deviating.
For which symptom did I ask? "Anxiety about others". In the meantime, everyone
knows that it is Sulphur and Sulphur often has a strong anxiety about others, that

we also see in Arsenicum, Cocculus, Phosphorus and Baryta carbonica. Sulphur also
often has it, but I could not get it clearly out of him.
A: You have two sons. If one son...
P: One son and two daughters.
A: When there are healthy problems, do you think: "Maybe it is this, or it will
develop to that direction, and then this or that." Do you think about that in this
way?
P: No, I don't think so. It remains inside...
A: And with your grandson?
P: Then I am concerned. When there is something wrong with him, I want to know
it instantly. I don't know why.
A: But then you want to know it immediately?
P: I want to know it. When he is better I am relieved.
A: It is at the same time...
P: Somehow... what do you mean with "anxiety"? What is the difference between
"anxiety" and "concern"? And much love for the person whom you like?
A: When your wife is away with the car?
P: Yes, then I also have it.
A: What do you have then?
P: A certain anxiety feeling, especially when she says she will be back at a certain
hour and when she isn't back.
A: Then you start to fantasy??
P: Yes, then I start to fantasy: just in case. And then the next moment: Man, what
are you thinking about? Then I try to push the thought aside. She is driving the car
for years, she is a good driver. No, then I think: Will something have happened?
That is exactly what Vithoulkas says about the anxiety about others. When the child
is away from home and should be back at 10.00 p.m. and when it is 10.00 p.m. and
the child is not there yet, Sulphur imagines that this or that has happened. He begins
to theorize anxiously.
Here, we see that when his wife has gone with the car and comes back too late, he is
anxious.
Also Phosphorus is in the rubric and you often mix it with Sulphur, because you
think that he is so sympathetic.
But he is in no way sympathetic, he is egoistic - "egotism" (p. 39). In the rubric you
see Sulphur, but the capital remedy is Platinum.
He only lives for himself, he only does what he wants to do. These are people who
live all alone in the mountains or in the wood, only for themselves, they sit there
with lots of books and study, study and think - maybe Einstein was Sulphur.
These are also the monks who are sitting there and they have enough with
themselves. They do not need other people, because they think, that they are the best
and have the best theory.
Why is Arsenicum anxious about others? The essence of Arsenicum is the security,
they need security, that is the central theme of Arsenicum on all levels.
Then there is another important remedy that we often mix with Lycopodium. There
are many people who have studied and are a teacher now and you know the remedy

for teachers is Lycopodium. But when the self-confidence is diminishing and the
anxiety about children and wife increases, then it is Baryta carbonica.
Normally, it is a consequence of exhaustion after too much study. They have to
study of their parents, and then the indecision starts, not being able to decide. "Will
I become a teacher or will I work at the bank?"
Besides, you also find the anticipation fear, like in Lycopodium.
Usually, they are bald, you even see this in young people. Baryta carbonica, these
are very intelligent people, mathematicians, but they do not have self-confidence. At
night they lie in bed and are anxious and you think of Arsenicum: and you think,
they are avarice, because they say they need so much and so much money, because
they have four children. But it is Baryta carbonica. They become anxious because of
all possible trivialities: they do not have enough money, they are not able to teach;
they doubt at themselves. Or when they want to buy a radio they can not decide
which radio they want to buy. They doubt, doubt and doubt, and then the anxiety,
that is Baryta carbonica.
You can mix up Baryta carbonica and Arsenicum, because often the difference is
not very big. They look like Lycopodium, but they suffer a little bit more and have a
larger irresolution. That is Baryta carbonica.
What do you have to ask to be sure it is Baryta carbonica? Whether they have had
thick tonsils in their childhood, whether they have had tonsillitis and whether the
tonsils have been taken away. I do not know whether you push the symptoms
inward by taking the tonsils away, in the direction of lack of self-confidence and the
irresolution. In most adults who have had Baryta carbonica I have seen that they
have their tonsils taken away in their childhood. I do not know if there is a relation,
but anyhow, Baryta carbonica is the most important remedy in swollen, thick,
chronical swollen tonsils.
A: That's it. Did it ever happen to you that you imagine that something would have
happened?
P: That might have happened.
A: Do you see it before your eyes?
P: No, no.
A: You are a person who likes a beer?
P: In some measure.
A: It doesn't matter how much or little, but about the desire, the thirst.
P: No, I can't say.
A: Don't you like to drink a beer?
P: No, then the circumstances have to be in accordance. I prefer a whisky or things
like that. I prefer something little and strong.
A: Something strong.
When you go out eating you can observe quite a lot. In Greece I went out eating
with someone and his wife was complaining about acne. I ordered fish, he also and
his wife meat. When she started to eat she took mustard on her meat, quite a lot of
mustard and then it was clear that she needed Hepar; Hepar is the remedy for acne.
In Celle I went out eating with someone who wanted to have a a remedy prescribed
for him. We were eating asparagus and with asparagus there is always melted
butter. There was a small dish with melted butter, but that was not enough for him,

he wanted another one. Then, they brought the beer and he drank it in one draught.
I knew which remedy he needed. This remedy drinks beer in one draught and they
can drink two, three beers after each other. It is not like Phosphorus who drink so
quickly because they are dry. I don't know why they do it, but they do it. And they
eat fat, fat meat and highly seasoned food. They have dark red lips and a plethoric
appearance, then you know the remedy. You do not need to talk much with them,
the observation is sufficient.
P: I prefer something strong. But there must also be a background. Then I also
think in advance, what I have to do the next hours. When I am in a company, invited
or so, and I have to drive home with the car, I drink very little; then I drink nothing.
Or I say: "Until that hour so and so much." Then nobody can trust upon me. I have
my own style. Two, three, four until that hour and then I have to be sure, that I can
eat something.
A: Why?
P: Because the alcohol you have in your body will be neutralized.
A: Are you hungry then?
P: No.
A: Can you bear hunger?
P: Yes, very well. I can eat nothing for days.
A: You don't notice anything?
P: No.
I don't believe him. He says, that he do not need food for days, but I am sure that he
has an emptiness in his stomach at 11.00. And I am sure that he will faint from
hunger or gets headache from hunger when he does not eat for one day. And this
feeling of emptiness is absolutely there, there is no need to discuss it further.
A: So, you prefer whisky.
P: Yes, to beer.
A: And brandy?
P: No, I drink brandy when I have a cold or so. Before I go to bed I drink a good
brandy. It works better than whisky. Then you can go in bed and perspire...
A: Do you perspire much at night?
P: Then, and the next day my cold is loose.
A: You never have headache?
P: No.
A: Can you lie in bed as long as you want?
P: Yes, but normally it is different. When I have to wake up at 6.00 o'clock I am
there at 6.00 o'clock.
A: At what time do you usually get up?
P: Usually at half past 8, 9 o'clock, but I don't go to bed before 1.00, 2.00 o'clock.
A: Even when you go to bed at 4 o'clock?
P: Yes.
A: Then, you don't lie in bed until noon?
P: No, no. I might lie down in the afternoon, when I don't have anything to do.
A: But not stay in bed until noon?
P: No, I can't.
A: Why not?

P: In the morning I am awake at a certain hour. Then I can turn around a little, but
I can't sleep anymore.
A: Then, you have to get up.
P: I have to get up.
A: You have never lain longer in bed?
P: No, that was seldom.
A: You can't?
P: I can until 9.00, 10.00 o'clock. Between 9.00 and 10.00 I get up and do the
necessary things. I might lie down in the afternoon at 1.00, 2.00 o'clock for a few
hours.
A: But you have to get up at a certain hour?
P: Yes.
A: When you stay longer in bed, you...
P: No, it has no sense, because I think about this or that I have to do, about my
taxes and so on. It has absolutely no sense.
What was I looking for with sleep? For which rubric? You know the weekendheadache, that is 90% Sulphur headache. And why? Because in the weekend they
stay longer in bed and Sulphur gets headache from prolonged sleep. They feel very
bad, when they usually get up at 8.00 o'clock and in the weekend they sleep until
10.00 o'clock. "Long sleep agg." (p. 1402; General p. 1156), that is one of the most
important key-notes of Sulphur, this weekend-headache.
In the rubric "long sleep agg." are two remedies capital: Lachesis and Sulphur,
Calcarea is only two capital.
A: Alright. You just told me that you liked something strong. Does this also concern
your meals?
P: Yes, I like a little mustard on my meals. There might also be pepper on it. A little
highly seasoned, I like that. Insipid, no! Always and everywhere I want salt on my
meals - even when I am on a visit, as they told me. Yes, I like salt.
A: A little hearty?
P: Yes, insipid meals are nothing for me.
The strongest desire of this remedy is highly seasoned food, then fat, but they can
also have an aversion to fat. It is not in the rubric "mustard". A combination of fat
and highly seasoned food indicates this remedy very strongly. Normally, they have
an aversion of fish. It is not in the rubric "desire fish", but nevertheless they can
have it.
Which remedy has also desire fat and highly seasoned food, but is very chilly? That
is Hepar sulphuris, and with Hepar you have to ask whether they like mustard.
Hepar can not sleep if one arm or hand comes out of the covers. You always have to
ask for that and then you can be sure that it is Hepar. They are always covered up
until the nose tip and they can not put one finger out of the covers. They perspire
under the covers, but they can not put one finger out of the covers. In acute Hepar
diseases you know the sneezing from uncovering and the general aggravation by
uncovering.

A: And you don't like fat?

P: The liking is at the moment second-rate. The cholesterol in my blood is too high,
that's why I may not eat it. Now and then, I like it very much. Previously, I have
eaten it with a spoon, it couldn't be fat enough.
A: And the fat rim of the meat?
P: Everything, it couldn't be fat enough. But I never liked fat meat, the rim of fat.
Well-baked, the meat has to be well-baked. But the juice or what you call it, couldn't
be fat enough. I don't like it diluted.
A: And sour?
P: Less. When I am in the mood I like it. For a long time I didn't like it. Sometimes
a collared herring or a sour herring, but that is only for a change.
A: Repeatedly?
P: No.
A: Do you drink with small draughts or long draught?
P: No, no.
A: And when you are thirsty?
P: No, never, also when I am thirsty. When I am really thirsty and I have a glass of
beer or so, it seldom happens. Especially in summer, when it is warm, then I drink it
in two or three draughts. I will never drink it at one draught.
Be careful! I asked him whether he drinks in small draughts or drinks his glass at
once and he says: "I never drink my glass at once, never!" and then he starts to
theorize: "But in summer, when it is warm..." Be careful, this remedy wraps you
around your finger, they play theatre.
I remember that one of my female colleagues from the Centre begged me to see a
patient who came for a depression. She already gave her all kinds of remedies,
Ignatia and all kinds of grief remedies, but nothing helped. Now, she came on a
Sunday and told me her story. I sat there and thought: "My God. That is not
Natrum muriaticum, that is not Ignatia...", and then suddenly she put her head on
the shoulder of her husband who was sitting next to her. I had the feeling that it was
not real, that it was only theatre. I asked her, why she put her head on his shoulder.
Her husband immediately said: "That is every time when she sleeps too long, every
Sunday she wakes up with headache." Then the remedy was clear - Sulphur 10M
and two days later everything was over. You feel that the suffering, the depression is
not really deep, it has something theatrical.
A: On which side do you sleep?
P: That is different. I wake up regularly at night.
A: No, no, I mean to fall asleep.
P: To fall asleep. Then I have to say 70% on the right side, 20% on the left side and
10% on the back.
A: To fall asleep?
P: Yes, that is different.

Even when he tells you this about 10% or 30% or 70%, it is theatre, these are
clichs.
A: You said, you often wake up at night?
P: Yes.
A: Is it regularly?
P: Yes. I rather have a lot of problems with that.
A: How often?
P: Three to four times.
Do not forget: "Frequent waking after midnight", Sulphur is capital, the catnap.
They wake up, fall asleep again, wake up and sleep again after midnight - "sleep,
frequent, midnight, after" (p. 1256; General p. 1036).
Remark: "But he always goes to bed after midnight."
A: Yes, but do not take this as a symptom. You have to take it, because he often
wakes up after midnight. You must not theorize. You have to take it the way he says.
It is the same, whether he goes to bed at 10.00 o'clock or at 1.00 o'clock, if he often
wakes up after midnight, you have to take this as a symptom.
A: Do you also dream?
P: No, only when I am ill, while perspiring. Then I am wet through, and I have
fever. They say: "You said something last night."
A: While sleeping?
P: Yes, while sleeping. About something, but I can't remember. Otherwise I never
dream.
A: Do you have nightmares?
P: No, I don't know.
A: Have you ever been in the mountains?
P: Yes.
A: And how do you feel there?
P: I suppose, like every other person. I wouldn't do anything else.
A: Do you like to go into the mountains?
P: No, no problem. I prefer adventure. I would like to do the 1.000 km of
Switzerland, but my wife is a little too anxious. She has fear of height. That is the
problem.
A: To drive with the car to Switzerland?
P: Of course. I would like to do it once. I have already missed many youth-dreams.
He is a dreamer. He wants to go to Switzerland high in the mountains. "When I was
young, I dreamt of it" and you see, he is still a dreamer and makes plans.
Normally, Sulphur has fear and vertigo on high places, that is the key-note. Do not
ask it immediately, try to ask it from behind and ask whether they love mountains
and things like that. Another important key-note is, when they say, that they can not
sleep on the back, because then they have nightmares. "Nightmares while sleeping
on the back" is also one of the important key-notes of Sulphur. Look at "sleep,

dreams, nightmare, lying on the back" (p. 1242; General p. 1025). That is a very
important key-note. Often they say: "I wake up in the morning and when I fall
asleep again, I lie on my back and wake up in a nightmare."
A: When you walk over a bridge and water is running underneath and you look
downwards... no problem?
P: No, I could even jump.
A: You are never dizzy or so?
Another rubric is "walking over the bridge, looking to running water" (p. 106).
That is especially Sulphur. When they are looking from the bridge to the running
water, they get vertigo.
P: On that level, no. Walk over the ridge of a roof, to change the T. V antenna or to
change the position, to climb into the highest tree so that the branches sway to and
fro, that is no problem. Walk on a high bridge at the edge of an abyss. I could sit on
the railing. There might be a depth of 50, or 100 m, I don't care.
A: Is there something you disgust?
P: Yes, I do.
A: How do you mean?
P: When I go eating somewhere in a restaurant, hotel or so, then I am inclined to
clean my cutlery with my serviette. That might be noble. I do it under the table,
because that is a little bit comic.
Which rubric is this in Kent? "Disgust" (p. 37).
Sulphur has a very fine nose, when he sees or smells something in his plate, for
example, a hair, he does not eat it. Sulphur disgusts very easily. When he, for
example, goes home drunken and sees someone vomiting, immediately he begins to
vomit. He is so easily disgust. He smells it from a few metres distance and begins
immediately to vomit. This disgust is a very important sign for Sulphur.
P: You can ask my wife. I am now about 40 years married - when did we marry?
1950? 37 years. As long as we are married, I have never used a cup or a glass she
used before. It is crazy, but it is so; her fork, knife, that is her cutlery. And when I
don't have cutlery I won't use hers. Why? I don't know. Then I take clean cutlery. I
do not say it is disgust for each other. I don't know in which category it belongs. I
absolutely don't disgust her, otherwise I wouldn't have hold it out so long. The same
with my grandchildren and so on, with someone else. It is impossible. I will never
pull at the cigarette of someone else. That's impossible, even when I know him very
well.
A: Can you bear the sun?
P: Yes, but I can not lie in it. I begrudge the time. I have so many things, for
example, a sunbench, I have never lain on it yet.
"Begrudge the time", all proverbs, he has time enough.

P: To lie half an hour on the sunbench, I think it is a waist of time. There is so much
to do. I would like to accomplish so many things in my life. I know it myself, that it
is impossible to do it. I have many projects of which I dreamt as a boy, but which
have been delayed, and afterwards because of certain circumstances I had to give
them up.
A: You make a lot of plans in your life?
P: Yes, I have made very much plans. When I want to go somewhere, I make
accurate plans.
A: I mean, in the sense of: I must do the 1.000 km of Switzerland.
P: I must do so... For a long time I had the idea, or better the dream...
A: You are really an idealist.
P: Yes, I dream of building a car for myself. But in Belgium you don't get a license
for that. That's definitely and therefore I can't. I have bought cars for that purpose,
to demolish them and to build a new coach-work - according to my own ideas. Do
you understand?
A: Yes, yes.
P: At the moment I have built a real car for my grandson - you should see it
yourself. It is only two meters, with everything on it. I have also made plans to build
a boat. I could so, but I don't have time for it. A boat for four persons, in which you
can sleep. Because my wife doesn't want to go in the sea, doesn't like water in
general, and can not swim, you have to decide for this or that.
A: Are you easily chilly?
P: No, never. It happens seldom. I can bear the warmth worse. I perspire easily.
A: Is the water in your bath cold, warm or luke?
P: Luke. I don't like the warmth well, but I neither like the cold.
A: It must have the exact temperature for you.
P: Yes.
That is very important. Everyone thinks that Sulphur is warm-blooded. That is
right. Sulphur is warm-blooded, but at least 30% of the Sulphur people are chilly in
general. Do not forget that. We have many, many Sulphur cases where the people
are chilly, and they often think that this can not be Sulphur, because he is so chilly.
But do not go away from Sulphur, because he is chilly.
Second, Sulphur can not bear very hot or very cold water. Often, they do not like to
wash themselves, they are afraid of water. They put their toe in the water - "iihh,
that is too cold', then they put it again in the water - "iihh, that is too warm". It
must have the right temperature.
A: As a child, did you ever have eczema?
P: No.
A: Itching?
P: Never.
Sulphur is a psoric remedy. When you ask and you insist they tell you they had
eczema as a child. That is an affirmation to prescribe Sulphur.

A: And at the feet?

P: I have a spot at my feet, but it only exists since a few years.
A: Since when?
P: Since three years.
A: So that appeared after the treatment.
P: Yes, it is so scaly, especially with warm weather, when I wear closed shoes. First,
there are vesicles that break open.
A: We have treated you. You couldn't work anymore, lift up your arm. You walked
like a monkey, the arms away from the body.
He has really walked like a monkey. It was here and there swollen, the knee, the
feet, he could not climb stairs. All his joints were swollen and inflamed. Not acute
inflamed like Belladonna, not so red, but swollen and slight red, but not hot. It was
terrible. He could not turn in bed, other people had to turn him.
A: How much percent have you improved in the meantime?
P: 90%. I can not say 100%. There are certain things which I absolutely can't do
anymore.
A: You couldn't lift up your arms anymore, how is it now? Please stand up.
At that time it was impossible, he just could not do it.
P: Well, I can ...
A: So, that is beautiful. Also lift them up sideways? That's good. I notice a few
knots.
P: Yes, a few on my hands. But this changes from day to day.
A: Previous it was completely swollen, thick. The joints of the hands as well. Here,
we notice a little swelling, a soft swelling. It is not a hard swelling. And it is different
from day to day?
P: Yes, it can be different, but it depends on what kind of work I have done.
A: This hand is better, isn't it?
P: That is better.
A: Because there were very thick knots.
P: There were very thick knots, so that my fingers were spread. I had to take off my
rings. And it differs from day to day, according to the work I have done. With a very
heavy hammer or when I cut wood with an axe, then I know that I will have thick
hands at the end of the day and that they hurt.
A: Then you have challenged it.
P: I started at zero. These were times that I was hopeless. I wasn't sure whether I
would make it or not. Then, slowly I came out of the depth. After one year it was
60% better. But when I saw that it became better, I had the courage to persevere.
He was only cured after one year of very much suffering. He had a very severe
aggravation, so that he had to stay in bed. It was because of the Cortisone he took
previously.

I give you a good advice: never accept persons who used Cortisone when you work
alone. You will suffer very, very much. Send people with Cortisone away. There are
so many other people who have never taken Cortisone and where you have much
faster results.
It is the same with asthma. It is very, very dangerous. When they have taken
Cortisone and you stop it, they can get a deadly aggravation. So, do not take them.
The reason why he had to stay in bed so long was the Cortisone. In Homoeopathy it
is the problem that we do not have beds for the patients. The hospitals of the
allopathic medicine are hotels. The patients can stay there a long time, because it is
paid by the assurance, in Homoeopathy it is different. I do not think that he would
have such a long aggravation if he did not have Cortisone. Indeed, it was for half a
year that he could not walk at all and then it improved slowly. And now he is doing
well since a few years. Now, we are 1988 and I saw him last week. He is definitely
cured, there is no discussion about that. Since then he never had a relapse, never.
Question: "... (about the height of the potency)?" (not understandable)
A: I started with Sulphur M and went up to CM. I have given him at least 10 or 12
times Sulphur, each time a higher potency. Every time when I thought that he had a
relapse I repeated Sulphur. But I am sure that it would not be necessary. You do not
have to give it every time, it was because of fear, it might be better for him to give
him once more Sulphur. One Sulphur and may be you can repeat Sulphur after a
real relapse, that would have been sufficient, but in chronic rheumatic diseases,
where it is very bad, it is difficult to know whether the patient has a relapse or not.
That is why I repeated the remedy a few times, every three months or so. Maybe it
was not necessary, but I have never given another remedy, only Sulphur.
I am sure that you can repeat the remedy without any harm or problems as long as
it is the right remedy and the patient needs it. When he develops from one remedy to
another, there is an aggravation and at the end you return to the starting-point. You
can repeat an indicated remedy and there is no problem.
I have given this man a few times Sulphur up to CM. Yes, M, 10M, 50M and then
CM, but every time only one tablet.
Question: "...about aggravation?"
A: Yes, that is what I said it is difficult to recognize.
First, they take Cortisone, you stop it and then they come into a very bad situation.
The feet, the knee, the finger and other joints swell and they have very severe pains.
You have to go through this aggravation, but it is an aggravation of a few months.
Then it is difficult to differentiate, whether it is better, or whether there are relapses.
And then in the meantime I gave him another dose of Sulphur. But now, he is better
since a few years, he has not have any Sulphur, unless he relapses. One week ago he
had a bad ischias and I repeated Sulphur; but as long as there are no problems, he
does not get a remedy.
Normally, you can repeat the remedy in a relapse, but often it is difficult to judge,
because then he is bad in general.
Question: "When can you repeat?"

A: Yes, in other situations you may not repeat the remedy, unless there is a real
relapse. I agree, we also say so. But often it is difficult to know whether it is a relapse
or not. It is better to wait and see, whether it is a real relapse. And when you become
afraid in a relapse and it becomes worse and you want to give the remedy in time,
you will not have problems, if the remedy is indicated; if it is not indicated, you will
get problems.
Question: "When do you repeat? When he is bad for one day or several days or for
how long?"
A: No, only when you have the feeling he is going downward, but it is very difficult
in chronic progressive polyarthritis. The only criterion I usually take is the sleep. As
long as they sleep well I do not touch the remedy; but when they get pain at night, I
repeat the remedy. This is for me the most interesting criterion in PCP to repeat a
remedy.
Question: "What about cases who had Cortisone in repeated cases? Is it advisable
to give them homoeopathic remedies in Cortisone-free periods?"
A: No. If Cortisone suppresses the disease, it means that this man is not so strong,
because you can suppress his disease. Then you have to stop the Cortisone and the
old symptoms appear again with the danger of bleedings and things like that.
You say that you can treat the patients in the Cortisone-free period, but if the
Cortisone has suppressed the symptoms previously, your remedy will do nothing,
nothing at all. In Homoeopathy you give a remedy for symptoms which are there; if
you take a remedy that suppresses the symptoms, your remedy will do nothing,
because the symptoms are not there.
When the disease is suppressed you can do nothing with your remedy. It is another
thing when there appear symptoms because of the suppression.
Question: "What about painkillers?"
A: If they take the pain away, they are suppressive and then you have to stop those
painkillers. If your homoeopathic remedy is correct the patient can stop those
painkillers; if your remedy is wrong, he can not stop them. We have to be flexible. I
don't know if you where at the first seminar in Augsburg. The theme of that seminar
was "flexibility" and "reflexibility". This means that we have to be flexible to have
reflexes - that is the reason for this kind of teaching - so that immediately like a
reflex the remedy becomes clear, but that you remain flexible. If there is a Rhus
toxicodendron-pain, you have to give Rhus toxicodendron and then comes the
Sulphur state which have been suppressed by the Cortisone. By giving Rhus
toxicodendron you take the ischias-pain away and you give energy to push the
chronic disease outward and then he asks the next remedy.
We have to be flexible.
There are people saying that a person needs his whole life the same remedy, but
that is not right. I will give you other examples. If someone needs Sulphur for his
chronic disease, and one day he will get an influenza he will need Baptisia. When he
does not get it, he can die of an acute influenza. Or he will get an encephalitis when
he has been treated with Cortisone. He will get in the neurology, becomes

unconscious for three months and then he will die - only because you did not give
him Baptisia. Or when he would have been all right with Sulphur and he would
have had an accident and we would have seen him with a snoring respiration and
open eyes, he would have needed Opium. Without Opium he would have died. Or if
he would have had a whiplash and he would have been lying there with extended
head and with extremities turned inward. Do you know this kind of state, this kind
of convulsions? That is Hypericum, for a base-brain-accident you need Hypericum.
This means that we have to give the right remedy at the right moment, and later
you may return to your constitutional remedy, why not? It is possible.
Question: "Could you stop all allopathic remedies? In every case? With every
patient?
A: We stop all the allopathic remedies in every case, unless maybe with old,
arteriosclerotic patients who have no complaints with antihypertensive remedies
and who have a very high potency, they can continue taking those antihypertensive
remedies. Even with most patients we saw that they felt better after we have stopped
the antihypertonic remedies, even when they have a hypertension of 18 or 20 kpa.
It is something different with a substitute therapy, for example, Insulin. But in 80 or
90 % of the cases you should stop all the medicines.
Question: "Why no Q potency?"
A: They say that Q potencies are mild in action and I have seen very strong
aggravations from Q potencies. And I have also seen very strong aggravations after
C potencies. But with very high C potencies I have no aggravation, but immediate
cures. Therefore, I do not know whether Q potencies really work so mild. We only
give very high C potencies.
Question: "You have stopped all the rheumatic medicines..." (not understandable)
A: Yes, you should stop all the antirheumatic medicines, because if your remedy is
correct you give him energy that he could stop them - but your remedy has to be
right, that is the big question. But even if your remedy is correct and you stop the
medicines you can have problems. Personally, I am afraid. Cortisone is the only
medicine I am really afraid of, because I have seen big bleedings in the skin after I
stop the Cortisone. I had to give Carbo vegetabilis and things like that. At the end
the patient was cured. It is not because allopaths give Cortisone, that homoeopaths
have to go to jail. The damage caused by the allopaths has not to be blamed to the
homoeopaths. Therefore it is better to keep your hands of, if you are not sure.
