Module Description:

This module introduces the learner to Electronic laboratory and Mechatronic workshop practices. There is a
strong emphasis on all safety aspects of working with electronic and light metal tools, components and
equipment.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to
1. Demonstrate a broad range of knowledge in an Electronics and Mechatronics laboratory environment
2. Identify, select and use tools appropriate to different Electronic circuit assembly and light metal tasks
3. Apply proper safety procedures to their work

Module Content & Assessment
Indicative Content
Safety
Safety in the Electronic and Mechatronic workshop. Safety precautions when using machine tools. Health and safety issues, an
understanding of ESD and precautions against ESD.
Soldering
Explanation of soldering and its uses in the electronics industry. How to use a soldering and care of the soldering iron. Preparation of work
and soldering techniques. De-soldering using vacuum tools and braided wire. Seamed soldering. Commercial soldering including flow
soldering and surface mount techniques. Identification of components with an emphasis on the physical representation of components in
data sheets. Preparation of components for assembly, correct use of bending tools. Lead forming. Correct component mounting.
Electronic Assembly
Preparation of PCBs from prepared artworks (both SMT and Through-Hole). The correct insertion and extraction of components.
Prototyping techniques including vero-board and wire-wrapping. Wiring techniques.
Basic Metal Work
Basic metal work skills to allow the student to prepare a front panel or project enclosure. Marking out an aluminium sheet, use of punches
and dies. Correct use of tools for drilling, tapping, riveting and bending. Correct use of files.
Project
The project will consist of an electronic application that will bring together the metal work, assembly and soldering skills learned throughout
the semester. The theory behind each stage of the project will be given in the 1-hour weekly lecture. The theory will be delivered in a
general form so that students may understand the basic principles behind the project. Marks will be allocated on the quality of work
produced and on overall aesthetic appearance.
