Digital Television Seminar
By: Engr. Bonby Perez Manalo
Personal Reaction:
National Telecommunications Commission issued a circular memorandum that
mandates the local broadcasting company must terminate their analog services and
must start digital by Dec. 31 2015.Unluckily due to delay of the release of the
implementing rules and regulations for digital television broadcast, the target date
was moved to 2020. In my opinion, adaptation of digital television in the Philippines
is not that necessary. Since that Philippines is a third world country, not all of the
people can afford to buy a television that will benefit from DTV and the black box to
receive digital television signals which cost a lot for a typical Filipino people.
Some of the local channels are already shifting to High Definition of resolution of
720p since that the 1080p requires 10MHz of bandwidth compared to the 6 MHz
allocated for Philippine Terrestrial Television. The transmitter of the digital television
should not also be near the transmitter of the analog television since that it need
high power and the digital television has low power. With this condition, the digital
signals can be interfered by the analog signal.
The digital television uses Ultra High Frequency (UHF) for its propagation. Since the
older analog frequency propagates in (VHF), there will come a time if the country
fully shifted to digital television, the frequency allocation of the analog television
will be vacated.
