IBCP Community and Service

Guidelines

IBCP Community and Service

What is Community and Service?

"Community and service is based on the principle of service learning. It provides students with
opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge in real life situations. Students work with
community members to undertake service
activities that satisfy identified needs; the
emphasis is on developing local knowledge, civic
responsibility, social aptitude, and personal
growth," (www.ibo.org/IBCP).
Community and Service is one fourth of the IBCP
Core (Approaches to Learning, Language
Development, Community and Service, and
Reflective Project) and is intended to help
students develop personally and professionally
through meaningful experiences in their
communities. Through Community and Service,
students have the chance to utilize their
knowledge and skills in real-life situations. All
students identify a need, address that need
through service activities, and reflect on their
experiences.

We must emphasize that Community and Service is NOT simply volunteer work.
Although volunteer work is an extremely worthwhile and valuable experience, Community and
Service learning is geared toward using experiences in the community to help students develop
additional knowledge and skills related to their career pathway. According to the National Youth
Leadership Council, service learning is based around standards of practice in the following areas:
Meaningful Services, Link to Curriculum, Reflection, Diversity, Youth Voice, Partnerships, Progress
Monitoring, and Duration and Intensity. Please see below for more details regarding each
standard of practice, (www.nylc.org).

IBCP Community and Service

In order to complete the Community and Service component of the IBCP at Windsor
Forest High School, students are expected to:
Identify a need in the community (we recommend that your project be related to your
career pathway)
Set goals for service learning
Make a detailed plan for service learning activities and have the plan approved by the
Community and Service coordinators
Set up initial meetings with community contacts
Plan and manage your own service learning plan
Work with the community to achieve predetermined goals
Reflect on the experience through their Weebly student blog (or coordinator-approved
alternative)
Log hours weekly through the WFHS IBCP website (http://www.TinyURL.com/IBCPLogForm).
See below for additional details on how to log hours and how to access the Weebly student
blogging platform.
The Community and Service coordinators and teacher-mentors will do the following to
help all students complete the Community and Service component of IBCP:
Work with community and business contacts to develop a network of service learning
contacts and partnerships
Provide students with information about service learning
Monitor the progress of students
Provide feedback to students
Help students achieve their desired goals

How to Complete the Community and Service Requirement:

IBCP Community and Service

All students in IBCP must complete at least 50 hours for their Community and Service
experience, including planning, doing, and reflecting. Students will utilize the MYP Design Cycle
to develop a Community and Service Plan. All students will keep a log of hours and reflect on
their experience through blog entries on their Weebly student blog (or coordinator-approved
alternative).
PLAN:
Identify a community need
Find a community organization that works in that need area
Work with your teacher-mentor to formulate a workable plan (include the IBCP
Coordinators, too!)
Draw up a detailed Community and Service plan that includes a schedule and specific
things you will be doing. You MUST submit this plan to your teacher-mentor and IBCP
Coordinators
DO:
Implement your plan
Be flexible, adapt your plan
Document and reflect on your experience using the Hours Log (see below) and Weebly
Blog (see below).
Check in with your teacher-mentor periodically and present documentation
REFLECT:
Post ideas, questions, comments, and reflections on your Weebly blog. Reflection
questions can be found below or on the IBCP section of Mr. Exleys site
(http://mrexley.weebly.com/IBCP.html).

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
Logging Hours
All IBCP students should log hours WEEKLY. To log hours, visit the Mr. Exleys wite and click the
log form link or go to http://www.TinyURL.com/IBCPLogForm. Periodically, the IBCP Coordinators
will review all hours submitted and will distribute progress reports to all students.

Reflection Blog:
The IBCP Coordinators help students set up Weebly accounts for each IBCP student. Reflection
questions can be found below or on the IBCP section of Mr. Exleys site
(http://mrexley.weebly.com/IBCP.html). If you have any questions, please ask the IBCP
Coordinators or your Approaches to Learning teacher.

Community and Service Assessment Criteria

IBCP students will be assessed in the following four areas of Learning Outcomes: Knowledge
Development, Personal Development, Social Development, and Civic Development. You will be
assessed according to the rubric below. The Community and Service component of IBCP is

internally assessed by WFHS. Your assessment will be based on the completion and quality of
your Community and Service (C&S) plan, the logging of C&S hours, and your reflections.

Community and Service Plan

Each IBCP student must complete the following plan for each organization with which he or she
plans to work. For example, if a student would like to work with two organizations, there must be
