Module 1

Introduction to Electrical Engineering: Essence of electricity, Conductors, semi


conductors and insulators Electric field; electric current, potential and potent
ial difference, electromotive force. Introduction to DC circuits, active and pas
sive two terminal elements, ohms law, voltage current relations for resistor, in
ductor, capacitor, Kirchhoff s laws, mesh analysis, concept of power and energy. M
agnetic Circuits. Force on a current carrying conductor placed in a magnetic fie
ld, Faradays laws of electromagnetic induction, Lenz s law, Fleming s rules and its
applications. Self and mutual inductance. Problems. (10 HOURS)

Module 2
Alternating Quantities : Principle of ac voltages , waveforms and basic definiti
ons, concept of root mean square and average values of alternating currents and
voltage, form factor and peak factor, phasor representation of alternating quant
ities, analysis of ac circuits with single basic network element, single phase s
eries circuits, single phase parallel circuits, single phase series parallel cir
cuits, power in ac circuits. Necessity and advantages of 3 phase circuits, star
and delta connection, star delta transformation, power in balanced three phase c
ircuits. Problems (10 HOURS)

Module 3
Basic Instruments : Introduction, classification of instruments, operating princ
iples, essential features of measuring instruments, Digital ammeter, voltmeter,
two-wattmeter method for the measurement of power, Earthing-types, two way & t
hree way control of lamps, systems and methods of wiring, discussion on basic pr
otective devices like MCB s and Fuses. (10 HOURS)

Module 4
Principle, construction and operation of DC machines. Types, emf equation of gen
erator, armature reaction, commutation, Interpoles,. DC motor working principle,
back emf and its importance. Torque equation. Problems on emf equation and effi
ciency. Characteristics of dc machines, 3 point starter Principle, construction
and operation of synchronous machines. Types, emf equation. (10 HOURS)

Module 5
Transformers definition, need and classification. Construction, Working principl
es and phasor diagrams of Single-phase Transformer, Emf equation, losses, Equiva
lent circuit, Regulation and efficiency, problems on emf equation. Induction mot
ors classification and types, concept of Rotating magnetic field. Slip and its s
ignificance. Necessity of starter, Types of starters, Problems on slip calculati
on (10 HOURS)
