CourseDescription
Thiscoursereinforcesmathematicalskillstaughtinthe7thgradewithadditional
advancedcomputationincludinganemphasisonAlgebraicconcepts.Studentsstudy
fractions,decimals,percents,positiveandnegativeintegers,powers,radicalsandrational
numbers.Theybecomemoreproficientinusingratios,proportionsandsolvingalgebraic
equations.Studentswilldevelopandexpandproblemsolvingskills(creativelyand
analytically)inordertosolvewordproblems.Studentscontinuetopracticeusingmath
skillstosolvewordproblemsandtothinkcreativelyandanalytically.Theywillgraph
linearequationsandsolveproblemsinvolvingrighttriangles.Thestudentswillfind
linearandanglemeasurementsinsimplegeometricfigures.Theywillalsocalculate
surfaceareaandvolume.

GradingPoliciesandAssignments
Homework(30%ofoverallgrade):
Studentswillhavedailyassignmentsandareexpectedtoshowtheirwork.The
workneedstobeshownsotheteachercanreproducetheresultsstepbystep.1pointwill
beawardedforeachcorrectworkandanswer.pointwillbeawardedforagoodeffort
onaproblembutamistakemadeinthework.0pointsawardedfornoattemptofthe
problemorananswergivenwithnoworkorexplanation.Homeworkisassigneddaily
andistobeturnedinthefollowingday.Ifhomeworkislate,10%ofthepointswillbe
deductedfromthefinalscoreand1%perdayafterthat.Allassignmentsaretobe
completedandworkshownorexplanationsgiven.
Quizzes/Tests(70%ofoverallgrade):
Quizzeswillbeannouncedbutaretobeexpectedhalfwaythroughthechapter
withpointsawardedasinassignments.Thequizzesusuallyhave10questions.For
missed/retakequizzesandteststheymaybetakenbeforeschoolorduringlunch.The
studentmustmakearrangementswiththeteacher.Theretakeofaquizmustbedone
beforethechaptertestisgivenandaretakeofatestmustbedonebeforethenexttestis
given.Onlyoneretakeisallowedperquizandtest.Itisrecommendedbeforearetake
thatthestudenthaveastudysessionwiththeteacherorprovetotheteacherthatthe
studentisbetterpreparedtotaketheretake.
AttendancePolicy
Studentsareexpectedtoattendeveryclassandbepreparedtoparticipatefullyinallclass
work.Participationwouldincludebutisnotlimitedtohavinghomeworkcompleted,
askingandansweringquestions,doingproblemsinclass,listening,etc.Ifastudentis
absent,thepersonwillmisstheopportunitytolearnthedailymaterial.Ifyouhave
questionsaboutmissedworkIamavailableafterschoolorattheCedarRapidssite
beforeschool.Cometalktomeandwecansetupatimetomeet.
FoodandDrink
Themathroomhasnewercarpetsopleasenofoodintheroom.Also,onlywaterina
closedbottleisneeded.
CellPhones
Cellphonesarenottobeusedduringclassunlessinstructedtobytheteacher.Theyareto
beleftinyourbookbag(outofsightoutofmind).Iftheteacherdeemsitisnecessary
forastudenttousethecellphoneduringclass,shewillgivepermission.Thiswouldbea
veryrareoccasion.Perhapsoneinstancewouldbetoletastudent,whoisabsent,know
whatwedidinclass.

Keephandsawayfromthewindowarea,teachersdesk,suppliesetc.
Bringneededsupplies:textbook,notebook,calculator,pencils,andlooseleafpaper.
Sharpenpencilsbeforeclassorduringstudytime.
Ifyoubreakarule,awarningwillbegiven.Ifyoucontinuetobreaktherule/s,thena
detentionwillbeservedduringlunchorafterschoolforagivenamountoftime.The
morerulesyoubreakthelongerthedetentionwillbe.Ifyouforgettocomeinafter
school,thenyouneedtocomeinbeforeschoolthenextday.Otherwise,youwillservea
doubletimedetentionthefollowingdayafterschool.
