A swords design depends on its intended function, the cultural context from which the weapon
arises and the tools, materials, working methods and proclivities of its maker. Considering all
swords are required to perform the same basic functions, cut, thrust, parry and block, it seems
surprising at first that thay should be so varied in design, both throughout time and across
cultures.
