Introduction
Water management is the management of water resources under set
policies and regulations defined by government agencies. Water which
was once an abundant natural resource, is now becoming a valuable
commodity due to the droughts and overuse. Water has to be used in right
amount in order to sustain water for the future generation. Understanding,
measuring and assessing the amount of usage and then analysing for
recognising the shortage of water occurring in the world. The usage
should be defined in a way that application of water in various activities
should not result in the wastage of water. Economic, environmental and
social considerations play a vital role in the increasing scarcity of water on
the earth. Careful and effective usage of water management will form an
important part of these considerations. We also aim to find out a solution
that the safety and quality of the water should be maintained because it
will consumed in by humans, in agriculture and by industries. The
management practices should ensure that the water should be preserved
under sustainable conditions.
Developing an effective water management strategies can be hindered by
two factors in an organisation. Firstly, water is not valued to a price
because of which it is not reflected to its full values. As a result many
organisations are not factoring the potential cost implication association
with the wastage into business decisions. Secondly, businesses rely on
water and often takes it availability for granted and assuming necessary
water supplies will be available for future whereas the reality is that water
is limited on the earth. Demand is increasing and quality is declining due
to the need for more food and energy, increased economic development
and others factors.

Scope of project
We will be covering the water management system of IIM Shillong along
with our analysis and results for the approach that we should follow in the
institute to come up with better sustainable process of water preservation
and conservation. The analysis would include in-depth analysis of water
supply system of the institute, amount of water consumed by the
participants and in consumed in the other activities that occur in the
institute and the methods that they can incorporate in the present system
to reduce the wastage.
Vision:
Responsibly manage and conserve water, to ensure the
environmental, economic and social health of the society
To recognize the importance of living within the capacity of the
natural environment as a means of ensuring the sustainability
Principles:

Water must be managed sustainably

Water is the vital content of the environment
Water plays an essential role in a prosperous economy and balanced
economic development
Water must be managed using an integrated approach with other
techniques
Water must be managed and conserved in a fair and efficient
manner

Objective
We will follow a holistic approach towards the conservation of water using
water management. As part of the strategic directions we need to follow a
specific course of action plan which will include the following objects:
A summary of the scope and objective of the issues considered
Analysis of the problem and water supply framework of the institute
Description of the management model used to analyse the scenario
Data Analysis of the water usage in the various activities of the
institute
Detail descriptions of the recommendation and strategies to address
the issues

Methodology
We receive water from Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department,
Meghalaya. The water distribution system at PHE consists of supply of
ground water. Some major water supply schemes where slow sand filters
and rapid gravity filters are used
for supplying drinking water are:
Slow Sand Filters

Umkhem W.S.S
Dalu W.S.S
BAghmara W.S.S
Chibonga W.S.S

Rapid Gravity Filters

Greater Shil!ong Water Supply Scheme (G.S.W.S.S.) Phase-I, Capacity-7.5

Tura Phase-II W.S.S, Capacity-3.6 MGD
Jowai W.S.S., Capacity-1.50 MGD
Mawlai W.S.S., Capacity-0.75 MGD
Simsanggiri W.S.S., Capacity-O.75 MGD
Baghmara Civil Sub Divn. Complex W.S.

Water is supplied to the college from the G.S.W.S.S. The valve for which is
located near the auditorium. Water from the valve is transferred to all the
wings. There are two valves, one for NB/EG and the other for D, E and

reserve tanks. Six reserve tanks are located near the badminton court.
Water in these reserve tank is from emergency issues. There are 2 motor
houses near to it. Near 1 motor house, there are 2 valves: one for NB &
other for EG. Near other motor house, there are 3 valves: one for B,
second for guest room & other for D, E wing.
There are 2 plumbers who are responsible for opening and closing
the valves of the safety tanks. There operational timing is from 7am
to 9am & 12pm to 3 pm daily.

2. Mr. Cal Birth- 9774565894
There are 2 engineers who look into infrastructure related problems.
1. Mr. Sunshine( Executive Engineer)- 8014975887
2. Mr. Sunland( Junior Engineer)- 9862502869
How we are going to approach the problem:
Water supply mapping:
Layout for the supply map is attached -

Issues Identified:
Washroom Issues Immediate attention is required for leakages.
Water has also started dampening the walls of some rooms and will
result in additional costs.
Overhead tank related Issues To find out the timings and amount
of water supply. To find out in how much time does it take for the

tank to get completely full. This needs to be done since only when
water starts overflowing we get to know that the tanks are full and it
is a reactive measure rather than being proactive.
Laundry and Mess related Issues An audit to be done regarding
how much water is consumed and the ways to reduce it in laundry.
Type of detergents and washing powders used also affects the water
consumed directly to a great extent.
New ideas to conserve water
Recycling the waste water a plant can be set up to recycle the
water within the campus
Rain water harvesting water settled on the roofs needs to be
collected and can used for various purposes such as it can be used
for plants and trees.
Rest of the water can be diverged to a particular source and can be
collected.
Increase usage of shower Bathing from shower consumes 3 times
less water as compared to filling a bucket and using it for bathing.
Reduction in size of flush tanks Size of a flush tank in
approximately 20 litres and this can be reduced to 6 litres and
height of the storage tank is high enough and would prove quite
effective.
Many people flush garbage in the toilets and this not only increases
the number of times one has to flush but also creates problems in
disposing and treating the waste.
Motion sensors Many a times we forget to turn the tap off and it
drains the whole water in the tank. Installing motion sensors can be
costly initially but will be very beneficial in saving water in the long
run.
Many people have a habit to keep the tap open while they brush,
shave, etc. This habit has to be demotivated.
Creating a sense of responsibility Since water is not very costly,
we tend to misuse it. A sense of responsibility should be inculcated
among the participants so that they intentionally try to save water.
