EXECTIVE SUMMARY
The Green in Resurgence project focuses mainly on the aspects of conserving and
improving the water quality in lakes and river ways around us. The concept of the project is to use
Effective Microorganisms, which is one of the Green Technologies, in the form of mudballs to
effectively purify the quality of the natural water resources by the method of bioremediation which
involves Effective Microorganisms to help curb the problem without causing additional
environmental impacts to the environment. The water resources around us have become polluted
due to the waste materials which have been disposed into them.
Effective Microorganisms are microorganisms which help to facilitate the breakdown of
organic matter and other insoluble sources of nutrients in the water which otherwise would cause
pollution to the water ways. Besides that, EM also helps to convert nitrogen from air to ammonia
to be used as fertilizers by plants eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers. These factors help
to promote the growth of natural plants and organisms in the water which rejuvenate the ecosystem.

INTRODUCTION
The river is a large stream of water. The river rises generally from a mountain or lake in a tableland.
At first several very narrow streams of water join together and form one larger stream. This stream
gradually widens in its course. On its way, it is joined by other smaller rivers. They are called its
tributaries. At last the river falls into a sea, lake or another river. The mouth of the river becomes
very wide. A river generally receives its water by the melting of snow on mountains. Sometimes
it is fed by rain. The river is of great use to us. It helps us in many ways. It flows through many
places. It makes them fertile. Prosperous cities are all situated on the banks of rivers. Ancient
civilizations flourished in some river valleys. The river is of great help to farmers. In some
countries, there are many rivers. Crops grow there in plenty. So famine is very rare there. Irrigation
is possible easily where there is a river. Irrigation helps agriculture. Rivers help us in another way.
Some rivers have strong currents when they flow down from a high place. These currents are used
by men in turning the wheels of mills or in generating electricity. Our National Government has
established many power stations in the river project areas. Zacharias et al. (2005) emphasized that
sustainable water management which incorporates both socio-economic and environmental
perspectives is a difficult but essential task in order to prevent potential environmental
deterioration. Here electricity is generated at a very cheap cost by using the waterpower of those
rivers. In spite of a relatively positive environmental record, Malaysia faces problems of
deforestation, pollution of inland and marine waters, soil and coastal erosion, overfishing and coral
reef destruction, along with air pollution, water pollution and the problem of waste
disposal.Malaysia has enjoyed one of the least polluted urban environments in Asia. However,
with the massive industrial development of recent years, and an increase in urbanisation and

vehicle use, air and water pollution are of growing concern. Solid waste from industries channel
towards the river and this cause river pollution.

Water pollution still poses a serious threat in certain parts of Malaysia. Studies show that the major
contributors to water pollution are agriculture, agro-based industries such as the processing of palm
oil and rubber, food and beverage processing plants, textile and leather tanneries, and electronic
hardware factories, many of which discharge effluents directly into rivers. Municipal sewage
dumped into rivers is also a major contributor to water pollution. In 1995 only 41.7% of Malaysian
rivers were classified as clean, that is safe for use by humans. There has been a steady
improvement since. In 2006, the number of rivers in the cleanest category had doubled from
2005. Only seven of Malaysias 146 river basins were categorized as polluted, down from 15 the
year before. One of the promising ways for improving Z. Zakaria et.al. / Effective Microorganisms
(EM) Technology for Sustainable Water Resources and Management water quality of rivers and
lakes, is the effective microorganism (EM) technology which has been much appreciated
comparative to other conventional methods because of its ecofriendly nature, and requires less
inputs, cost and capital.

The concept of EM was developed by Professor Dr. Teruo Higa, University of Ryukyus,
Okinawa, Japan in 1980. There are three types of microorganisms which are categorized into
decomposing or degenerative, opportunistic or neutral and constructive or regenerative. EM
belongs to the regenerative category whereby they can prevent decomposition in any type of
substances and thus maintain the health of both living organisms and the environment (PSDC,
2009). The basic purpose of EM is the restoration of healthy ecosystem in both soil and water by
using mixed cultures of beneficial and naturally-occurring microorganism. Therefore, the EM has
great potential in creating an environment most suitable for the existence, propagation, and
prosperity of life (Higa & Parr, 1994). It has also been emphasized that the sustainable water supply
should include non-excessive use of surface water, non depletive groundwater abstraction,
efficient re-use of treated wastewater, etc. (Downs et al., 2000; Shiklomanov, 2000; Vrsmarty
et al., 2000). The EM technology has a great potential for restoring water quality by increasing
freshwater supply to meet the demand of various sectors.

The 'Green in Resurgence' project follows the same concept as above which make use of the
'good microorganisms' in digesting the waste in the river banks. The function of EM is the
conversion of a degraded ecosystem full of harmful microbes to one that is productive and contains
useful microorganisms. In this project we made mud balls using soils and mix it with EM .The
function of mud balls in the river is to eliminate the odor that causes by chemical substances that
flowing in the river. Besides stopping the growth of algae and to break down of sludge. Through
EM technology , we can safe the nature from polluting in a minimal cost and also keeping the river
safe from chemical. This gives better environment for the aquatic animals .

From this project ,it gives an overview of how serious river pollution and drastic action should be
takes to reduce the pollution before it become worse .Humans are the main reason for this pollution
to occur. From this project, the students of SMK Menglembu are aware of the river pollution and
they will be more caring towards the nature and understand that destructions are made by humans.
However, people are aware of this river pollution but they thinks that the government should be
responsible of it and the same goes to student of SMK Menglembu .Many of them are not aware
of the positive changes towards river by using EM chemicals. The major river pollution is caused
by throwing solid waste, plastics and all the household waste into river. It creates very unbalanced
environment in the river. Moreover, industrial waste are also the main reason why toxic substances
are in the river.

Furthermore, even though some do know how to treat it, but the treatment cost is more to a concern
for them. Hence, this project not only exposes the students in SMK Menglembu but also the
organizing committee that such a simple and effective way of river pollution reduction does exist.
By just mixing the EM with molasses and red earth soil and making it into a mudball which then
will be thrown into the river for cleansing purpose. All the materials can be obtained easily and at
a lower cost. This bring benefits to all of us, either students or the committee members because
this is an off-class knowledge and they can experience themselves instead of just listening how it
is done. Apart from that, this project allows us to know the importance of teamwork. Every
department has to perform specific task assigned in order to ensure a smooth flow of conduct.
Early exposure of this kind of project is beneficial for us because no matter any job disciplinary,
teamwork is an essential quality that one must possess so that any project can be carried out
successfully.

OBJECTIVES
The project focuses on getting the students involved in the creation and dispersion of mudballs
into waterways around Perak and would also educate them on the science behind how mudballs
are able to work effectively. The specific objectives of this community service project are as
follows:

To encourage students to take part in activities to conserve the environment,

To inculcate the sense of responsibility towards the need to conserve the environment,

To stimulate the students to think critically to contribute constructive ideas for the
betterment of present technology.

Departmental Objectives:

To ensure everything goes smoothly on the day of the event.

Provide a master of ceremony on the day of the event.

Organize games and conduct the activities as planned

The High Committees & Public Relations Department has the responsibility and

obligation to supervise all the activities and responsibilities within the department and in the other
departments to go according to the schedule that is bellow mentioned. Moreover, it is the
departments responsibility to keep in constant contact with the Supervisor and the School where
the activity will be conducted, to give them periodic updates about all the activities that are been
conducted in order to achieve our goal.
In order to help promote environmental awareness among the younger generation and to
encourage them to take preventive measures to protect the environment, this Green in
Resurgence project would be a great avenue.

OUTCOME OF PROJECT
The effective micro-organism (EM) mudball project that was conducted had brought
many benefits to the people who took part in it as well as the environment. This project was
essential in cleaning the Kinta riverfront as the water flowing there had been polluted by the flow
upriver. We as residents of Perak Darul Ridzuan, need to take care of its rivers as it is part of our
responsibilities.
When asked about the effective micro-organism mudball project, not many people have
actually seen or heard of this project before. The rivers are so polluted yet there is no way to
clean up the rivers efficiently. This project had helped us to understand the roles of
microorganisms in cleaning the rivers and that there is an efficient way of cleaning our rivers.
This knowledge that we obtain from this project can be further used in other developments like
for example, the treatment of soil pollution or even air pollution. Since the making of the
mudball was participated by secondary school children, it would be easier for them to understand
the concept of micro-organisms as they would be studying biology. They would also have a basic
understanding of chemical reactions in chemistry that can help later on in college when they are
exposed to subjects like wastewater engineering or microbiology. This knowledge that they have
gained from the project will also be spread to their parents and indirectly more and more people
are coming to know of this project.

This project was also like a bonding session between the students of Universiti Teknologi
Petronas and SMK Menglembu. We got to know the students of SMK Menglembu in a way that

not a simple seminar would normally do. We joined hand in hand in making the mudballs as we
guided them through the steps of making those mudballs. We had lots of fun with them
especially during the games and activity session. All of the games that were conducted that day
involved teamwork as it is the most important attribute in nowadays society. Also, games such as
landmines and color bomb were new to them so they took an instant liking to those games
and we hope that they continue these games in the future as they become facilitators just like us.
When we reached the riverfront there was a competition between the facilitators and the students
on who could throw the mudball the furthest and both the facilitators and the students had a good
time there.

Furthermore, we learned about what it was like to be involved in a charity project. We

learned the steps involved in coming up with the project, proposing the project to our supervisor,
preparing for the event and carrying out the event on the specified day. This project was very
challenging to us as there were many obstacles we have had to face during the preparation and
the event day. Some of the problems we faced were the uncertainty on the number of students
joining the event. Estimation cannot be done as materials will be wasted if there is too little
students and materials will not be enough if there is too many. Since my group is in charge of
games and activities, our solution was to create many low budget games so that even if the
number of students exceed our expectation we can still split them into many groups to take part
in various games with the budget kept in control. One of the problems we faced on the day of the
event was the time allocation. Based on the main event schedule, we were allocated only about
30 minutes for games and about 1 hour for EM explanation on slides but on that day the EM
explanation finished 30 minutes earlier and the games department had to take care of the extra 30

minutes with entertainment. So, through this we have become more quick-witted and creative
due to thinking of games on the top of our heads. Needless to say, this project had brought a lot
of benefits that will help to strengthen us for our future endeavors.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the Green in Resurgence community project is a social service for the
good of society and also the environment where the conservation of environment by using
Effective Microorganism Technology is used and it is also being a platform where we will be
creating awareness among youth today especially students, towards the harmony relationship
between humans and the environment we dwell in. Other than that, by conducting this project, it
will be an important measure towards saving environment especially rivers that is being our source
of domestic water. Furthermore, Effective Microorganism (EM) technology, as it is environmental
friendly which improve quality of water in a cost effective way is a good way to start with it. With
that, this Green in Resurgence project aimed to instil the awareness and responsibility among
the various group of society especially young students so that they can become a better citizen and
play their important part into protecting and preserving the environment before passing them on
to the next generation.

We have by conducting the community service, achieved the targeted objectives where
wholly we were focusing the project towards getting the students involved personally in the
creation and dispersion of mud balls into waterways around Perak and would also educate them
on the science behind how mud balls are able to work effectively. Throughout the project we were
also successfully abled to fulfil all the specific objectives that we aimed to achieve from the start
to the finishing of the program. The objectives achieved were:

To encourage students to take part in activities to conserve the environment,

To inculcate the sense of responsibility towards the need to conserve the environment,

To stimulate the students to think critically to contribute constructive ideas for the
betterment of present technology.
Apart from that, we as the Games & Activities Department had our fair share of our job

scope to make the event successful. We successfully planned the detailed event flow of activities
that takes place on the day of the event and we were also in-charged of ice-breaking sessions with
the students. Also, our department members hosted the introduction and closing ceremony of the
event in a smooth and cheerful manner. Overall, we did a satisfying job in supervising, facilitating
and controlling the flow of the activities.

Apart from that, it is evident that the event turned out to be a successful one that we together
as team felt that we had reached the outcome that we had expected to gain from it. We as a team
when recapped our progress through the journey of implementing Green Resurgence, we
managed somehow to help promote environmental awareness among the younger generation and
to encourage them to take preventive measures to protect the environment. We feel immensely
happy that the community service has brought up a significant change and outcome to the students,
society and also to our own team. Throughout the project, the outcome was so widely beneficial
that the group members developed a sense of social responsibility and of community service, hence
it developed the sense of need to give back to the community what we have been taught throughout
our years in the University. Not only that but by having school students involved in the project,
we have learned that the best way of shaping a society is by shaping the children, because they are
capable of understanding easier and also they are the future to of a nation. Hence, indirectly, we
have not only helped to build a better and preserved green environment but also helped to nurture
the future of the nation through the noble and responsible way that they would one day become a
good addition to the future society.
Last but not least, the community service had played a crucial part in the participants
most aspects of life including of the environment. The approach of improving the water quality by
mud balls is fresh and innovative but is believed will be practiced more and broader in future.

RECOMMENDATION FOR IMPROVEMENT

Although this event turned out to be successful, several measures can be taken into consideration
to improve the performance of the event. Some of those measure include:
1. Pre-event meeting and post-event meeting: All group members must have one final
meeting before the event to highlight each others roles in the event and the flow of the
event from start until finish. Once the event has concluded, all group members should
meet again to share their opinions on the event performance and to discuss any problems
faced during the event. This is a crucial point because even if one member is not present
during the briefing, it could disrupt the whole event flow and cause confusion among
other group members. The details of every members roles discussed must be very
specific and not have any changes because last minute changes can reduce the
effectiveness of the program.
2. More fun games and activities: Since the participants of the event are mainly students,
they find it difficult to bond with the facilitators as some of them are shy and nervous. In
order to eliminate this barrier of awkwardness, the facilitators should find a way to
become friendly towards the students. Introducing games and fun activities is an effective
way to bond with them. However, not all games can be suited with secondary school
students. The only way a game can be interesting to a person is if it is age-suited. It is
difficult for a group of 30 year old men to have fun playing musical chairs and at the
same time it is difficult for a group of 3 year olds to have fun playing treasure hunt.
Therefore, it is necessary for the games and activities department to prepare games that
are more age-suited so that everyone taking part in it can have a good time.
3. Research and Development: Event planning nowadays has become very basic with little
preparation only. In order for an event to be meaningful, the organizers should come up
with a new idea or concept that nobody has seen before. With this said, every event
should have at least one element that makes it a surprise that helps people remember it for
a long time as well as the message interpreted by it. This element can exist in many ways
like for example the way the presenter presents his topic or the way the facilitator
interacts with the students. This is especially important for students from secondary

school because these students go through a lot of seminars as they are sitting for Sijil
Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). If your event does not stand out and motivate the students,
then it becomes just another boring seminar for them.
4. Collaboration with the related Ministry: As we know not all community service
programs are associated with natural environments. It is to be noted as the community
service is conducted out in the public with the involvement of school children, it not only
important to have the support of the school community but also encouragement from the
government part. Our program, Green Resurgence is mostly about the good aspects to
be done to the environment especially rivers by using the Effective Microorganism
technology that originated from the Japanese. By the help of the ministry, they help to
ease the process of selecting the proper rivers and the proper school to be chosen to go
with the community program. It is because the Ministry of Environment has the
information and the required means to see which river is more polluted and which region
has the most people or the community with the least awareness regarding the cleanness of
the river.
5. Propagation through social media: For most of the events conducted, it is important to
let the society know about the effort that we are putting into, so that we could gain more
outreach. Instead of using the social media for some unbeneficial purposes, we could use
them to send out the relevant information to the participant and the society related to let
them know that there is such a program going to run in their neighborhood. Other than
that, it would also add up value to the main objective of the community service by
making the other community realize about issue that is going on and start to take up the
program as an example. In other words, the program will outreach to various parts of the
world and make the program a famous way to counter the issue of uncleanliness of rivers
around us. The use of social media also can give us new alternatives and means to
improvise our method of implementing the program.
