KITCHEN RANGE HOODS

1. CFM required is length x width (in feet) x velocity
as per above table.
(Depth of hood does not enter into calculations)
2. Hood should extend approximately 12 inches
beyond front and sides of range. Depth should
be two feet or more to accommodate bursts of
smoke.
3. Duct velocity can be 500 to 2000 FPM.
4. Two smaller ventilators are recommended in
place of one for more flexible operation and also
to provide ventilation should one fan fail.
Recommended ventilators for kitchen range
hoods are radial blade and backward curve
blowers.
5. U.L. classification YZHW and NFPA 96 provide
more detail.

Although fan noise is a function of a multitude of factors

the principal sources are (a) air turbulence (b) mechanical
and (c) vibration. Generally the quietest fan is also the most
mechanically efficient. Because a given fan location characteristics dictate audible noise, fan dBA cannot be guaranteed. However, relative noise levels of fans can be suitable
for considering one fan versus another.
The SONE number used in this catalog is a mathematically derived loudness (sound pressure) value as heard by
the human ear 5 feet from the inlet of the noise source in free
air (no ducts). Under these conditions, 10 SONES is twice as
loud as 5 SONES; or 20 SONES is 1/2 as loud as 40
SONES. Thus, SONE NUMBERS can be used as guides for
fan selection.
Where noise is a critical factor a more detailed, scientific analysis of the noise source and its surroundings would be
desirable. However, lined ducts, especially near the fan, provide ample sound attenuation for most clean air situations.
Also, to double the loudness (SONES) of a given fan, 13
more of the same fan must be added.

Central Fan Co. uses motors that comply with EPACT (see page 10)
Follow all local electrical and safety codes, as well as the National
Electrical Code (NEC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act
(OSHA).
TYPE OF MOTOR USUALLY REQUIRED

The great majority of small motors (12 HP & smaller) are 115 volts
single phase.
NEMA MOTOR FRAME DIMENSIONS-INCHES
Sizes of 34 to 112 are fairly divided between 208/230 volts single

phase and 208 to 550 volts 3 phase.
Sizes of 2 HP and larger are generally three phase as they are less
expensive and less troublesome than single phase motors.

INPUT POWER SAVING (RPM CONTROL)

A significant reduction in energy consumption is realized when centrifugal fan
speeds are reduced only slightly. In applications where maximum demand volume
is not constant (VAV Systems), RPM control with inverters (variable frequency)
could result in considerable reduction in power consumption. (Fan power demand
varies with RPM3)
Analysis of each fan application will determine the suitability of various volume
control methods (Dampers, inlet vanes & inverters). Inverters available special order.

The Energy Policy Act (EPAct) took effect October 24, 1997. This law mandates efficiency standards for general purpose, three phase, 2,4 and 6 pole
AC motors from 1 to 200 horsepower manufactured for sale in the U.S. Many motors such as explosion proof, two speed, TEFC, single phase and others, are excluded. Central Fan will provide motors that comply with the mandate when applicable.

Residential Attic Fans

IMPORTANT FEATURES
Fan size selected should be capable of changing the entire volume of a

home in approximately two minutes. (Do not include the attic space unless
used for living .)
Slow speed belt driven for quietness

Ball bearing fan & motor-permanently lubricated
Compact construction with no unnecessary weight
An average size home will require a 30 inch fan.

Operation with a time switch is recommended. Turn fan on for hours desired
and forget it. Fan shuts off automatically.
Two types to choose from

Single phase-115 Volts ODP
Time switch installs in single gang switch box. Two speed operation affords
additional flexibility. Two speed & timer switches in double gang box.
Atlas Wall Fans

Recommended for their quietness of operation. For attic window or wall installation in
homes with reasonably air tight attics. Two smaller fans may be used if space is not available for one large fan.
Fan installs against wall opening on the inside and the shutters on the outside. Shutters
close automatically when the fan stops, keeping rain, wind and insects out.
Ceiling opening may be used as an access to the attic if ceiling shutters are placed on
the attic floor unfastened.

A cost effective way to ensure adequate combustion air for

maximum performance of heating appliances. The IN-FORCER
can be ducted up to 100 ft. allowing isolated mechanical rooms to
be supplied with outdoor combustion air. Optional control panel
allows interlock with up to 4 additional appliances.
Where the IN-FORCER supplies combustion and dilution air
each appliance must be electrically interlocked and supplied at the
rate of 50 CFM per 100,000 Btu/hr.

effectively closing against backdraft controlled by state-of-the-art electronics to
ensure quiet and reliable actuation whatever

A new system of mounting for Window

Roof models which accommodates varying
mounting thicknesses. Wall models have telescopic liners for all types of walls and a neat
decorative trim.
For
cleaning, T-series units can be completely dismantled in minutes without the

need for special tools and all the non-electrical components can be washed thoroughly
in warm soapy water.

For general ventilation where duct systems are required. Compact, easy to mount and quiet in operation, these
blowers are designed to deliver large volumes of air economically. Ideal for wash rooms, boiler rooms, restaurants, and

Coatings Summary: (Central Fan will apply the following coatings.)

PVC-Sprayed, air dryed, multilayer coatings have good-to-excellent resistance to most acids, alkalies and marine exposures. Coatings are flexible,
fairly durable, and good to 150F. The most commonly used protective coating. Unsuitable in most vapor phase organic solvents.
Eisenheiss-Synthetic polyester resin which is sprayed, air dryed in multilayer coatings providing tough impermeable coatings good to 150F.
Chemical resistance similar to PVC except notably a slightly better performance when exposed to tricholorethylene, benzene, carbon tet., or gasoline. Does not perform well in hydrogen peroxide.
Heresite-A sprayed phenolic resin coating which provides good resistance to most common solvents, organic and inorganic acids. Not
recommended for caustics, alkalies, and oxidizing agents. Good to 120F. Affords fair resistance to methyl ethyl ketone, methylene chloride,
trichlorethylene.
Epoxy-One of the most durable all-purpose coatings which withstands reasonable abrasion and most chemicals.
Baked epoxy-(Factory applied by Peerless on all blowers) effectively protects carbon steel surfaces from normal atmospheric conditions. Is attacked
by acids, alkalies, and certain solvents. Can provide effective undercoating. CENTRAL FAN DOES NOT APPLY BAKED EPOXY COATINGS.
NOTE: BECAUSE OF THE INHERENT FRAGILITY OF ALL COATINGS, NO EXPLICIT WARRANTY OF SERVICEABILITY CAN BE MADE.
BLOWERS: Rigid PVC has good all-around corrosion resistance and is usually the economic material of choice. However, PVC becomes brittle at sub-zero temperatures and loses its strength above 150F. Thus, steel reinforcement is used in PVC blower wheels. Do not use FRP above 250F, or PVDF above 180F.
All are spark resistant (electric insulator). Graphite impregnation into FRP can make it conductive to control static electricity. UV radiation (direct sun) will
destroy polypropylene. Although slightly more in initial cost, FRP blowers prove to be more economical where the environment is severe and maximum durability is desired. Polyvinylidene (PVDF) will withstand inorganic acids and bases, organic acids, alcohols, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated solvents and halogens (except fluorine).

Isolators for Vibration and Noise Control

The most effective vibration and noise control is obtained when the isolator deflects up to its maximum limitwithout exceeding that maximum deflection.
For proper selection:
1. Equipment weight - greater deflection (up to max.) provides maximum isolation
2. Equipment RPM - lower than 1200RPM use springs for maximum isolation (Higher RPMs use rubber regardless of substructure)

SIDE INTAKE
CONSERVES ENERGY IN MAKE-UP AIR SYSTEMS
Can be located on roof directly over kitchen exhaust hoods, reducing
cost of electrical hook-up, expensive insulated interior ducts and fittings.
May also reduce the number of roof penetrations required.
FEATURES
Easy on site addition of duct extension* to meet code requirements
for supply and exhaust separation
Permanent filters serviceable from exterior of unit.
Blower equipped with ball bearings with an operating temperature
range of -65 to +250F.
Latched top cover provides easy access to blower, motor and
drives.
Weather resistant finish of enamel paint on galvanized steel.

Permanent aluminum mesh filters mounted in intake hood (except
Model SIS-20)
SIS-20 has large drawer type filter section with screened inlet (not illustrated).
Large filter surface areas for efficient filtering (Intake velocities

Lau Double Inlet Blowers

FORWARD CURVE - DOUBLE WIDTH WHEELS - BELT DRIVE
Low cost double inlet blowers with double width wheels for those applications not requiring duct to the inlet end.
Their compact design and quietness of operation make these blowers popular for residential and commercial
heating and air conditioning.
Belt driven for flexible choice of speeds and air outputs, with standard motors that are easy and economical to
replace if necessary.
CLOCKWISE OR CCW ROTATION - (facing motor shaft). Bottom horizontal discharge unless otherwise specified. Discharge position can be easily changed.
Long life bronze bearings - Oversized belt drive - True running balanced wheels. Furnished with soft rubber
vibration bushings. Use ball bearings for 3/4 HP or greater motor.
