Bandung,
capital
of
West

,
is
a
great
place
to
visit
any
?me
of
the
year
as
its
not
only
renowned
for
its
picturesque
open
vista,
but
the
town
also
oers
many
aNrac?ons
well
worth
a
visit.
Surrounded
by
green
fer?le
mountains,
Bandung
today
is
Indonesias
center
for
learning
and
crea?vity.
Here
is
the
well-known
Ins?tute
Technology
Bandung
(ITB)
established
since
1920,
the
university
that
has
produced
many
of
Indonesias
top
scien?sts
from
engineers,
geologists
to
leaders
in
business
management.
Today
Bandung
is
one
of
Indonesias
most
pres?gious
university
towns.
Bandung
is
also
the
center
of
Indonesias
burgeoning
ICT
technology,
at
the
same
?me
it
is
a
center
of
arts
and
ar?sts.
Every
weekend
and
long
holidays
the
city
is
lled
with
young
people
from
Jakarta
who
ock
to
Bandung
to
enjoy
its
youthful
crea?ve
atmosphere
in
music,
pain?ng,
fashion,
and
the
culinary
arts.
Bandung
has
a
rich
heritage
of
buildings
in
exemplary
art
deco
architecture.
They
include
the
beau?ful
Villa

-
now
housing
the

the
Dutch
colonial
elite
went
to
shop,
and
the
Savoy-Homann
and
Preanger
hotels,
where
they
would
hold
grand
balls.
In
those
colonial
heydays
in
the
early
20th
century,
Bandung
became
known
as
Paris
van
Java,
or
the
Paris
of
Java,
where
Dutch
planters
and
ladies
paraded
and
aunted
their
wealth
and
beauty
along
the
boulevards
and
Bragaweg,
then
the
Champs
Elysees
of
the
East.
Today,
Bandung
is
remembered
in
history
interna?onally
as
the
venue
of
the
First
Asian-
African
Conference
held
in
1955
which
brought
together
for
the
rst
?me,
leaders
of
29
Asian
and
African
countries,
who
jointly
declared
to
ght
colonialism
for
na?onal
independence.
ANending
the
Conference
were
noted
na?onal
leaders,
among
whom,
Jawaharlal
Nehru
and

Indira
Gandhi
of
India,
Chao

of
China,
Gamal
Abdel
Nasser
of
Egypt,
Prince
Norodom
Sihanouk
of
Cambodia
and
Indonesias
own
President
Soekarno.
The
Asian-African
Conference
became
the
precursor
of
the
Non-Aligned
Movement.
Now
Bandung
is
ready
to
once
again
ensures
that
the
spirit
and

of
the

remain

Arrival in Jakarta
Most
interna?onal
travelers
arrive
via
the
Soekarno-HaNa
Interna?onal
Airport
about
15miles
(25km)
west
of
the
city.
The
majority
of
interna?onal
ights
to
Indonesia
come
through
this
airport,
which
makes
genng
to
Jakarta
fairly
easy.
Some
of
the
larger
airlines
represented
are
China
Airlines,
China
Southern
Airlines,
Cathay
Pacic,
Singapore

Malaysia

KLM
Royal

Emirates,

ag
carrier
also
connects
Jakarta
to
interna?onal
des?na?ons
in
Australia,
Far
East,
Asia,
and
the
Middle

To
get
to
Indonesia
from
Western
Europe
or

it
will
probably
be
necessary
to
transfer
at
one
of
the
larger

ci?es
in
Asia
or
the
Middle
East
such
as
Hong
Kong,
Kuala
Lumpur,
Singapore,
Dubai,
Doha,
or
Abu

The
rise
of
budget
airlines
has
seen
a
sharp
fall
in
the
cost
of
services
to
Jakarta
from
places
like
Singapore,
Kuala

and
Bangkok
so
more
and
more
budget
travellers
are
arriving
into
the

by

the

routes.
