Inviting the World to be Baptized

As you are all aware, this last week the Spain Barcelona Mission had an "Invite the
World" week in which we set a goal for every companionship in the mission to invite 15
people to be baptized. The missionaries in El Faro are so committed and so
dedicated to the work of teaching repentance and baptizing converts that any time
you give them a challenge, they not only accept the challenge but embrace it and
exceed it. That was the case with the challenge of finding 8 news per week last
April/May when we found 907 "news" in one week--far exceeding the previous high of
650. Once again El Faro's true colors shown with a baptismal invitation extended to
1340 children of our Heavenly Father in one week, far exceeding the goal of inviting
1275. I was thrilled as I read your letters describing your experience. Many of you
expressed your feelings that as a result of the challenge, it actually became easier to
extend baptismal challenges and many of you became bolder and less inhibited in
extending the invitation to many people on the first encounter. The scriptures are full
of inspiring stories of great missionaries like Peter, Paul, Ammon, Amulek, Dan Jones,
Wilford Woodruff who boldly extended baptismal challenges on a first encounter.
Peter's experience is very illustrative on the Day of Pentecost when he extended a
baptismal challenge which resulted in over 3,000 baptisms.
According to Preach My Gospel, one way of fulfilling our desires to bring salvation
to the souls of our spirit brothers and sisters is to cry repentance and boldly invite
people to exercise faith unto repentance, to be baptized by water and the Spirit and
to endure faithfully to the end. Commitment is a crucial part of repentance. It is the
act of obligating our investigators to a course of action and then diligently following
through on that decision. When people are genuinely committed, they have real
intent, meaning that they full intend to do what they have committed to do.
We recently reviewed the results of our mission survey and in some area we were
outstanding but in other areas we need some more work. In response to the question,
"How often do I invite investigators to be baptized no later than the second lesson?",

as a mission only 29% said "Always", while 41% said "Almost always", and 22% said "Often."
As a mission I know we can do better than 29% who "Always" challenge our investigators
to be baptized no later than the 2nd lesson. Based on your letters, I read a number of
cases in which a bold invitation to be baptized resulted in a surprise answer of "yes" or
"yes, I do want to find out that it is true and will be baptized if I do." The elect of our
Heavenly Father will respond if the baptismal challenge is offered with sweet boldness
associated with great love, respect, and the presence of the Spirit.
It is my hope and prayer that every single one of us will be bolder in extending
baptismal challenges no later than the 2nd lesson. I believe the Lord will bless us richly if
we do so. "Luis, segur el ejemplo de Jesucristo al ser bautizado por alguien que
posee la autoridad del sacerdocio de Dios? Si, el dia 20 de agosto......"
Con appreciacion por un desafio fuerte de invitar para ser bautizado,
Presidente Dayton

Character

Character is the inward motivation to do what is right according to the highest

standards of behavior in every situation and no matter the cost. It consists of the stable
and distinctive qualities built into an individuals life which determine his or her responses
regardless of the circumstances. Character is based on universal standards that are time
tested and recognized as being right.
Character is the wise response to the pressure of a difficult situation and what we do
when we think that no one is watching. At Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona
good character is emphasized. The Seniors who orient the incoming students wear tshirts that read, How do you live your life when nobody is watching? On the back of
the T-Shirt it reads,
I pledge to
I pledge to
I pledge to
I pledge to

be academically honest
be responsible
be respectful
be trustworthy

In the mission field we have the opportunity to build our character by working on
qualities such as faith, compassion, patience, diligence, etc. When we base our daily
decisions on good character we experience practical and lasting rewards. I love this
quote by Martin Luther King, The time is always right to do what is right.
President David O. McKay said, There has been but one perfect character in the
world Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Redeemer of the WorldHis wisdom was so

broad and deep that it comprehended the ways of men and the purposes of God.
Every act that is recorded of his short, though eventful life, was one of benevolence that
comprehends charity and love. His self-control, whether exemplified in his power over his
appetites and passions or his dignity and poise when before his persecutors, was perfect
it was divine.
The Savior extended this invitation, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.
(Matt. 4:19) The invitation to follow Christ is an invitation to follow his example and
become like him. We are grateful for your good character and well continue to pray for
you as you strive to become more like the Savior.
With much love,
Hermana Dayton

manage to get the font full,
print (one or two) programs,
and coordinate the fact that
there were 2 whole baptismal
