Genetics Unit

Standard: MS-LS3-1: Develop and use a model to describe why

structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may
affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects
to the structure and function of the organism.
Learning Target: I can explain mutations and their effects
I would use these cubes after we had taken notes and completed a
whole group lab. I would want students to complete at least 3 and I
would let them choose to work with a partner or individually.
Cube 1 (lower level):
1. Create a punnett square with Bb x BB and describe the possible
outcomes. (With scaffolding)
2. Use your cornell notes to create a quizlet set over the vocabulary
3. Go to http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/molecules/transcribe
and complete the simulation.
4. Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-f8AfEvsCQ
and make your own cartoon about the process of making proteins.
5. Go to https://www.fossweb.com/delegate/ssi-wdf-ucmwebContent/Contribution
%20Folders/FOSS/multimedia_ms_1E/PopulationsandEcosystems/simul
ations/stebbins1.html and complete the simulation. Which colors of
walking stick variations would be beneficial and which would be
harmful?
6. Read Chapter 1 of Your Genes, Your Choice. Do you feel that Martin
should seek the treatment? Make pros and cons list to help him decide.
http://ehrweb.aaas.org/ehr/books/yourgenes.pdf ( I would have this
printed for them)

Cube 2 (higher level):

1. Create a punnett square with Bb x BB and describe the possible
outcomes.
2. Use your cornell notes to create a quizlet set over the vocabulary
3. Go to http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/molecules/transcribe
and complete the simulation.
4. Create a cartoon about the process of making proteins
5 Research a harmful genetic mutation and what causes it. Write a
paragraph of your findings.
6. Read Chapter 1 of Your Genes, Your Choice. Do you feel that
Martin should seek the treatment? Write an argument for why you feel
he should or should not receive treatment.
