CourseOverview:WelcometoEnglishII.Iamsoexcitedtohaveeachofyouinmyclass,and
lookforwardtotheyearahead.ThisyearwewillbuildupontheEnglishskillsthatyouhave
learnedthusfarinyourhighschoolcareer.Thisyearstudentswilldevelopreading
comprehensionskills,compositionfluency,higherorderthinkingskills,aswellasoraland
writtenanalysisofavarietyoftexts.Thesetextswillspanoverseveraltimeperiods,genres,and
cultures.Studentsshouldbepreparedtocompleteapproximatelytwohoursofhomeworkeach
week.

Comingtoclasspreparedmeansmakingsurethatyouhavereadanymaterialthatwas
assignedpreviouslysothatyouwillbeabletoparticipateindiscussion.

WhileIfullysupportfreedomofspeech,justunderstandthattheclassroomisnotthe

TheEnglishClassroomcansometimesgetabitheatedduringdiscussions,somakesure
thatyouunderstandeveryoneisentitledtotheirownopinions.Inadditionmakesurethat

youarerespectfulwhenexpressingyouropinion.Thinkaboutwhatyousaybeforeyou
sayit.
4. Ipromisetocometoeachclassexcitedtoteachandwithapositiveattitude.Itisthen
yourresponsibilitytomakesureIstayinapositiveattitudethroughclassparticipation,
completionofwork,andrespectfulbehavior.
5. Youareallowedtoleavetheclassroom2timeseachquarterwithoutreceivingatardy,
anytimeyouleavetheclassroomafteryour2freebieswillresultinatardy.

LateWorkPolicy:
Allworkmustbeturnedinonthedaythatitisduetoreceivefullcredit.Anyworkthatislate
willreceivea20%deductioninpoints.Alllateworkmustbesubmittednolaterthan2weeks
priortotheendofthequarter.

MakeupWork:
1. Studentswillhave1dayforeverydaytheyareabsenttomakeuptheirwork.
2. Allassignmentsthatyouhavemissedwilluploadedtotheclassroom.
3. Youcanaskforinstructionsforyourmakeupworkbeforeclass,afterclass,before
school,afterschool,orduringmyplanperiod.Iwillnotgiveinstructiontoassignments
missedduringtheregularclasstime.

MandatoryStudyHall:
Studentsthatcompletelessthan50%ofthehomeworkassignedwillbegivenaMandatory
StudyHallthatmustbeservedthatday.Allworkisduebythebeginningofthehourtoavoida
MandatoryStudyHall.BecausethisisanEnglishcourse,asignificantportionofthehomework
istoreadthematerialassigned.Theonlywaytogaugeifyouhavecompletedthishomeworkis
foryoutopassaquizgiveninclass.Ifyouscoreunderapassinggrade(6/10)onaquiz,you
willbegivenaMandatoryStudyHalltocompletethereadingassignment.Afteryouservethe
Mandatoryyoumayretakeadifferentquizoverthesamereadingselectionforlatecredit(20%
deduction.)

Grading:

1. EachweekstudentswillbegivenanArticleoftheWeek.Thisassignmentisworth
10pts.andaddsupquickly,soitisaneasywaytoimproveyourgrade,butifnot
completeditcandragyourgradedownveryquickly.
2. Allpapersandtestswillbeworth50pts.
3. Allclassprojectswillbe30pts.
4. Gatewaybookswillbeworth25pts./quarter.
5. 4+1Revisionwillbe5pts./week.
6. Sharingfreewrites5pts./week
7. AdditionalassignmentswillbegivenasFormativeAssessments,butwillnotexceed20%
oftotalgrade.

AcademicDishonestyandPlagiarism
Academicdishonestyincludescheating,fabricatingorfalsifyinginformationorsources,
impropercollaboration,submittingthesamepaperfordifferentclasseswithoutpermission,and
plagiarism.Plagiarismoccurswhenwritersdeliberatelyorunintentionallyuseanotherperson's
language,ideas,ormaterialsandpresentthemastheirownwithoutproperlyacknowledgingand
citingthesource.
*IfastudentiscaughtbeingAcademicallyDishonesthe/shewillbegivenanalternative
assignmentthatcanonlyscore70%ofthetotalpointspossiblefortheoriginalassignment.
