ELECTRO-HYDRAU LIC CO NTROL FLU I D SPECI FICATION

1 General
This specification ind icates the req u i rements for new, u nused , fire-resista nt hyd raulic fluid
for Electro-Hyd ra u l i c Control ( E HC) systems i n steam & gas tu rb i nes. I n add ition it
identifies the im porta nt fl u id properties in operatio n ; their l i m its i n use an d the m ethods by

wh ich they should be tested . Fi nall y it l ists the suppl iers of prod u cts cu rrently approved
against th is issue of the specification an d recom mends su itable del ivery terms.

2 New Fluid Req u i rements

2. 1 ) Composition :
The basestock for the flu id shall be 1 00% triaryl p hosphate (also known as a 'natural'
p hosp h ate ester). It m ay co nta i n small amounts of stabil isers, antifoams etc. Viscosity
index i m p rovers shall not be used as these can be removed by the con d itioning med i u m .

2.2) Technical S pecification

3.2) Fluid D e l ivery and Storage

The hyd raulic flu i d is suppl ied and shi p ped i n seal ed steel d rums of 55 U S gallons F"'208
l iter] capacity or 46 I mperial gallons (-2 1 0 l itres) su itably l ined (e.g. by Synthezi ne) to
avoid co nta m i n ati o n . U po n recei pt they should be handled with sufficient care to avoid
d ropping or d entin g the barrels to prevent rupture of the l i n i n g . Storage shall be i nsid e in
a dry location rel atively free of d ust and d i rt. E nsure that each d ru m is tightly sealed . The
top of each d ru m shall be covered with a seat cover o r s i m ilar. Before uncapping the
d ru m s to add flu i d to the hyd raulic power u n it reservoi r, thoroughly clean the d ru m tops
a nd caps with a suitable solvent (non-ch lori nated) to p revent introduci ng contam i nation
into the hyd ra u l i c system . The length o f o n-site storage sho u ld be m i n i m ized as much as
possible (a m axi m u m peri od of one year is suggested } .
New hydraulic flu i d s h a l l be pum ped i nto the e h c fluid reservoi r from d ru ms after passing
through a pol is h i n g fi lter (5 m icron (beta=1 000)). However, before using the transfer
p u mp and its fi ltration syste m , they should be tho roughly flushed with the ehc fl uid to
avoid conta m i n ation from resid ues and m i neral o i l . The flush o i l should be d isposed of i n
accordance with applica ble regu latio ns. Reseal a n d store em pty d rums for future use i n
the event the contro l flui d reservoi r needs d rai n i n g .
It is reco m m ended that o n ly ful l d rums b e used o r , i f the d ru m has been resealed a n d then
left for m onths before use, that the fl u id i n such a d ru m be checked before use.
