(14) Retarder
(15) Transmission oil pump
(16) Modulating valves (Electronic clutch pressure control)
(17) Scavenge screen
(18) Sump
The transmission is controlled, cooled and lubricated by oil that is supplied from the sump (18) of the
planetary transmission by transmission oil pump (15) .
Oil is taken from the sump of the planetary transmission by the transmission oil pump and oil is fed
via transmission oil filter (6) to the following components:
Torque Converter Lockup Clutch Valve (2)
Retarder Hydraulic Control Valve (5)
Retarder (14)
Transmission Oil Cooler (9)
Modulating Valves (Electronic Clutch Pressure Control) (16)
Transmission Lubrication (11)
Test points for oil pressure and an oil temperature sensor are incorporated in the hydraulic system.
Control of the planetary transmission is achieved by electronically activated modulating valves (16)
that allow oil to fill the various clutches in the planetary transmission.
Torque converter (4) allows the power to be transmitted smoothly from the engine to the planetary
transmission. The torque converter allows the speeds of the engine and the transmission to be matched
smoothly. Once the speeds are matched, the modulating valve for the torque converter lockup clutch
(2) engages clutch (3) in the torque converter. The torque converter provides direct drive from the
engine to the planetary transmission.
Oil is fed to the torque converter and the oil transmits the drive from the engine to the planetary
transmission. Oil that comes from the torque converter goes via check valve (10) to retarder hydraulic
control valve (5) . The oil then goes from the retarder hydraulic control valve to the oil cooler. The oil
returns to the retarder hydraulic control valve and the oil is sent to the transmission as lubricant (11) .
If retarder operation is selected, the oil from the torque converter outlet is sent to the retarder (14) by
the retarder hydraulic control valve. The oil then goes to the oil cooler and forward as lubricant for the
transmission.

A second hydraulic circuit provides control and lubrication for the transfer gears and the interaxle
differential. This circuit also controls the axle differentials.
Gear pump (24) , which is a dual gear pump, delivers oil from tank (28) through filter (23) to solenoid
and relief valve (20) . The tank is located on the front left side of the tractor. The gear pump is located
on top of the transmission.
During normal operation, diverter valve (20d) directs the oil flow into the transfer gear case, which
lubricates the transfer gears. Gear pump (24) continuously scavenges the lubricating oil from the
transfer gear case. The oil is returned to the tank through oil cooler (26) .
When the operator selects the interaxle differential lock, solenoid valve (20b) is energized and the
solenoid valve directs oil to clutch (19a) of the interaxle differential. The resultant pressure engages
the clutch which neutralizes the differential effect between the front and rear outputs. At the same

time, diverter valve (20d) is moved by a pressure differential across the spool and this blocks the oil
flow from the gear pump into the transfer gear case. Oil is now made available to solenoid valve (20a)
which controls the axle differential locks.
Note: The layout of solenoid valves (20a) and (20b) ensures that the interaxle differential must be
engaged before the axle differentials can be engaged.
When the operator selects the axle differential locks, solenoid valve (20a) is energized and the
solenoid valve directs oil to axle differentials (21) , (22) , and (25) . The resultant pressure engages
clutches (21a) , (22a) , and (25a) and this causes the differential effect between the wheels to be
neutralized. Relief valve (20c) relieves any excess system pressure into the transfer gear case.
When the operator unselects the differential locks, the solenoid valves are de-energized and solenoid
valves direct oil from the clutches into the transfer gear case as additional lubrication. At the same
time, diverter valve (20d) shifts and the diverter valve allows oil from the gear pump to lubricate the
transfer gears.
