SPEAKING SAMPLE PART 3 'MOBILE PHONE'

- Is it a good or a bad thing to have a mobile phone? Why?
I don't think it's a case of whether it's good or bad - it's part of life for people now - that's how we
communicate and do business. People search for information and shop online using their mobiles,
they do banking and communicate for work and many other things also. It's a really important
thing, just like having a car, it would be difficult to do many things without it.
- What can you do with a mobile phone?
Well, like I said before, you can search for information on the internet, you can pay bills and do
banking, you can shop and buy things online and obviously you can email, text and call people
you know. Many phones allow you to listen to music, watch videos, navigate and use other apps
depending on what you're interested in. I have about 50 different apps loaded on my phone so I
can videochat, learn English, translate, and do other activities.
- Do old and young people use mobile phones in the same way?
Generally, no, I think older people tend to still call someone when they want to talk. Younger
people prefer to send texts. I'm not sure if older people use as many apps or functions of their
mobile phones as young people do, or take as many pictures. Older people still see a mobile
phone as basicaly a way to communicate with another person. Younger people use it as part of
living, as an everyday tool to enable them to do things.
- What can be done to avoid children becoming inattentive in class?
Because of mobile phones? The school should have a policy for mobile phones in the classroom.
Students shouldn't be permitted to have their phones on when they are in lessons, but be allowed
to use them between classes and in breaktime. Or at least schools should require that mobile
phones are muted while students are in class so nobody gets distracted by them ringinig.
Describe an interesting conversation you had with someone you didnt know. You should say
- who the person was
- where the conversation took place
- what you talked about
- and explain why you found the conversation interesting.
Im going to talk about an interesting conversation that I had a couple of weeks ago in a music
shop. I was walking along one of the main shopping streets in the city centre, when a large
window displaying all sorts of musical instruments caught my eye. Out of curiosity, I decided to
go in and have a look around.
The person I ended up speaking to was a shop assistant on the second floor, in the area of the
shop dedicated to acoustic guitars. I hadnt intended to speak to anyone, but the assistant

approached me in a friendly way and asked whether I had any questions.

I explained to the assistant that I hadnt played the guitar for years, but that I wondered what the
differences were between the various acoustic guitars on show. He talked to me about the
different makes and models, whether they were factory or handmade, the woods and varnishes
used, the variation in sound quality, and of course the price range.
I found the conversation fascinating because the shop assistant was so knowledgeable. It was
obvious that he had a passion for the guitar, and he didnt mind talking to me even though I had
made it clear that I didnt intend to buy anything. He even picked up and played three or four of
the instruments to demonstrate the differences in their sound.

1. Do you like cooking? Why / why not?
Sometimes. I like preparing a special meal for family or friends who visit, but everyday cooking
is a bit boring; its something that has to be done, but its not really fun.
2. Who did the cooking in your family when you were a child?
My mother almost always did the cooking when I was young. I dont think she trusted my father
to make a nice meal.
3. Do you think that its important to know how to cook well?
Im not sure whether its important to cook well, but I do think that everyone should know the
basics. It definitely isnt healthy to rely on pre-prepared meals or fast food.
4. Do you think that children should be taught cookery at school?
Yes, thats probably a good idea. If all children knew how to cook a few basic, healthy meals,
that would surely be a good thing.

3. Do you think children should be encouraged to do more sport?

- I say yes, they probably do. Because, you know, today many children only know to go to
school every day like a robot or just watch TV for several hours without physical activities. This
might make them become couch-potatoes with a couple of potential risks, which have bad
impact on their health. Therefore, sports are the best approach helping them stay healthy.

- Do you think it is important for everyone to have a role model?
Yes, I believe that it is very beneficial for us to have role models who we can look at and learn
from them. The main reason is that it helps people to live more purposefully. I think during each
period of life people would tend to have different role models, depending on their interest and
what they aim to achieve. In my case, when I was small I admired my older brother very much.
But when I grew up a little more, I looked at successful businessmen and wished that I could
achieve great successes like them.
- What effects do you think famous people can have on the society?
This group of people can have great impacts on the community, and their influences could be
positive as well as negative. People in general, especially young people like teenagers often
follow what their idols do. It is good that there are more and more celebrities getting involved in
voluntary work. Certainly they can encourage and motivate other people to do the same. On the
contrary, there are singers and actors and actresses who lead a very poor lifestyle, and their
fans may adapt this bad lifestyle.
[SPEAKING SAMPLES] TASK 3 SOMETHING EXPENSIVE YOU OWN
Bi ni task 3 th phi nh ny n mem ^^
- What is your opinion about having expensive things?
Well, it depends on the nature of the things that people possess. I personally think that owning
things with high price is reasonable as long as they are truly useful. As for me and many other
students, a personal computer is very helpful, so even though we have to work and save money
for it I still believe that it is a beneficial investment. By contrast, if people just buy expensive
stuff for showing off then it is a waste of money, which could be used for better purposes.
- Which other purposes this money can be used for?
There are several ways of spending money, which can help develop the society as a whole.
Firstly, we can use this money to bring about better education. As you may know, in my home
country Vietnam, there is still a lack of schools with good quality in remote regions, and a lot of
children living there are still illiterate. Money can be used for building up education centers in
moutainous areas. Another example is to spend money on supporting poor people who have
diseases. They cannot afford high hospitality fees, and thus may suffer from untreated sickness.
- Do you agree that young people should earn money for their own things?
In general, I completely support this opinion due to some reasons. The first reason is that when
people, especially teenagers, have to work for things they want to buy then they will understand

how difficult it is to earn money. This will teach them to have the right attitude towards moneyrelated issues. Besides, they will have to take responsibility and think carefully before deciding
to buy anything since it is their own money.
SPEAKING SAMPLE TASK 2 MAGAZINE

Describe an interesting magazine. You should say:
how you know about this magazine
where you can buy it
what it contains
and explain why you think this magazine is interesting.
I dont actually read magazines much nowadays I generally get my information from the
internet. But one magazine I do read is The Week.
I found out about this because of my sister and brother-in-law. Theyve been subscribers to it for
quite some time now. The last time I went to visit them I saw it on the table in their kitchen and
just picked it up to read.
Im not exactly certain where you can buy it. I imagine that you can get it from local newsagents
and other shops that sell newspapers and magazines. But when I decided to buy it I just filled out
a coupon inside the magazine that gave me a free offer so I get it delivered to my door with the
post.
I decided to subscribe to it because it saves me time! It contains the best and most interesting
articles from several different newspapers and is neatly divided into different topics. I dont have
to spend time any more browsing different sites on the net. So for instance I can find out about
World News and read articles first published in French or German newspapers.
Why is it interesting? There are lots of reasons but I think what I like most is that you find
articles written from different viewpoints. You never know quite what to expect. Thats slightly
unusual in a magazine.

SPEAKING SAMPLES TASK 3 ENVIRONMENT

Bi mu tuyt vi v idea ln dng t cho topic Environment n cc mem
- What do you think your country's environment will be like in the future (e.g., 20 or 50 years in
the future)?
- In the long term future I don't think it will be much different from how it is at the moment.
There will probably be a little less open space because the population is growing and they will
need to build more housing, but that will probably be the biggest change. Hopefully there will be
less pollution, but it's not something that you can really see here in the air or feel, it's something

scientists measure. If you asked my parents what the envionment was like 20 or 30 years ago
here, they would probably describe it as very similar to now, but with less houses.
- Do older people in your country have the same attitudes towards the environment as young
people?
- Personally I think they care for it a lot more than most young people, they understand the need
for recycling and they've heard all the arguments about global warming and climate change. The
reality is that older people were more in touch with nature than younger peope are now. While
climate change and all the clean energy policies seem to be a current trend, older people had less
impact on the enviornment because they basically consumed less and they didn't have the
'disposable culture' that we have today.
- What are some ways that the government could use to help educate people about the
environment?
- The government already use many different ways such as TV, newspapers and magazines to
tell people about problems regarding the environment and also to introduce new energy policies
and envionmental initiatives.
Advertising, whether it's on TV or the internet makes people aware of changes that are
happeneing. It coud be the latest community environmental program or the release of the latest
model electric car or hybrid vehicle.
I suppose all the media channels are effective. Using schools certainly seems to have produced a
generation which is more aware of enviornmental impact regarding many things such as industry
and consumerism.

- What do you think about making friends on Facebook?
- Its fun! Its normal nowadays to have a lot of friends on Facebook and other social media. Its
more interesting than just having friends where you live. But its different, obviously, because
you dont see them or go places with them, but its still fun.
- Does a list of 500 friends make sense to you?
- Well, the term friend is just a name given by Facebook, obviously not everybody who likes
your page or comments on something you said is a friend in the traditional sense of the word. I
suppose if you thought about all the people you ever had contat with in your life, from school,
college, work and other social activities, if you kept a note of their name then you would have
more than 500 by now so I dont think its that strange that people have thousands of friends
on Facebook or Twitter. Maybe it would be more accurate to call them contacts, but it doesnt
really matter.

- Does Facebook change the meaning of friendship?

- No, not really. I still hang out with my friends and we go out at the weekends and do stuff
together. Friends on Facebook are different in the past some people used to write letters to
people in other countries like penpals I guess you could think of facebook as smething
similar but its obviously much more advanced and you can do much more than just write to
people.
- What is a true friendship in your opinion?
- Its having a relationship with another person and you have something in common. Maybe you
went to the same school or youre interested in the same things. You share time and experiences
together and that makes for a bond. Long term friendship usually means there is also trust and
confidence between the two people and they are willing to help each other if necessary. But I
suppose that everyone has their own definition of friendship and what it means to them.
Describe a photograph that you remember.
You should say:
when it was taken
who took it
what is in the photograph
and explain why you remember this photograph
Sample:
Im going to tell you about a photograph of me and my sister. Its quite unusual in that Im not
very photogenic and its one of the few photos of me where I like the way I look.
I cant remember the exact date the photo was taken but it was quite some time ago now. It was
when we were on a big family holiday in the Lake District perhaps 10 years ago. We dont
often now go on holidays as a family together and that was almost the last time the whole family
was there.
I guess that Paul my brother-in-law was the one behind the camera. I say that because hes
brilliant at photography and any good photos we have are normally ones that hes taken. Hes got
a great eye for it and of course he has all the right gear special lenses and so on.
Its quite a simple photo. Its just my sister and myself in a boat on a lake you can see the lake
and shore in the background. But the idea is that its just the two of us together looking happy.
Part of the reason it looks great I suppose is that its in black and white and that gives it a
timeless quality. The other thing is that he caught us unawares and neither of us was looking
directly at the camera so its not exactly a portrait.
I remember because it brings back great memories of a memorable holiday and as I said before I
look good in it!

SPEAKING SAMPLES TASK 3 EATING HABITS

- Why do you think people go to restaurants when they want to celebrate something?
- I guess everyone has their own reasons, but probably because its not something they do every
day, so it seems more special, especially if its an important occasion. The other big benefit is
that nobody has to do the cooking or clearing up afterwards so everyone can simply enjoy the
celebration or event whichever it is. Nobody has to do anything. Its always nice to be waited on,
so I think thats why most people prefer it.
- Which are more popular in your country: fast food restaurants or traditional restaurants?
- Theyre both popular, but in different ways and for different reasons. I think fast food
restaurants are popular for grabbing a quick bite or snack, as they are fast and you can usually
find one nearby. Traditional restaurants are more popular for special occasions or going out for
lunch or dinner at the weekend when people have more time to sit and enjoy the food and the
ambience or atmosphere of the place. They usually cost more too, so maybe people dont go as
often, but theyre still popular. I dont think anyone would consider gong to a fast food place for
a special occasion unless it was a kids birthday party or something similar, in which case it
makes a lot of sense, as some of these places cater specially for such events.
- Why do you think that is?
- Why are they both popular? I think its because they both have good and bad things about them
they both cater for different needs and situations, and they both do what they do well, I suppose
it depends what you are looking for when you want to eat.
- Some people say that food in an expensive restaurant is always better than food in a cheap
restaurant would you agree?
-In my experience its not that simple. Ive has some amazingly good food in cheap restaurants
and some disgustingly bad food in a supposedly classy and expensive place. I think thats why
'word of mouth' advertising is so important in the restaurant business. You simply cant
guarantee that a place that looks expensive and charges a lot of money will indeed offer a better
dining experience than a cheaper restaurant with fewer frills. The service can be just the same
and the quality of food the same too it might only be the surroundings that are more upmarket
in reality.

Im going to talk to you about my friend Annabelle. Shes the best cook I know and shes made
lots of great meals for me. I know that every time I go around to her place to eat that Ill be given
something wonderful.
Annabelle isnt a professional chef or anything like that- although I do think that she could easily
make a living as a cook. In fact shes a lawyer and has a full-time job that means she can only
ever cook in her spare time.
I first got to know Annie when we were at college together. We were both first year students and
didnt know anyone else and we became close because we lived next door to each other in the
accommodation block. Even back then she was a terrific cook and she would invite me over to
her room on a regular basis. Neither of us had much money but while I survived on a diet of
marmite sandwiches, she would make soups and stews the sort of really practical food that
lasts for a while and can be re-heated and costs very little to make because the ingredients are so
cheap.
What kind of food does she cook? Well, shes got a little more adventurous since out student
days and she now has a huge variety of dishes. Shes quite experimental and so you can never
quite tell what kind kind of food will be served up when you go around. It could be traditional
French cuisine, a Spanish paella or even a curry.

Im going to describe the first time I visited Englands capital city, London, on a school trip

The positive experience wasnt confined to one particular place in London. As far as I remember,
I enjoyed the whole trip, from the coach journey to the visits to various tourist attractions. We
got off the coach near the Houses of Parliament, and so one of my first memories was seeing the
famous Big Ben clock tower. We also visited the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and
Trafalgar Square.
As I said earlier, it was a school trip, and I think there were around thirty of us, including two
teachers. I was with a group of close friends, which made the experience more enjoyable.
What really struck me about London was that it was historic but modern and thriving at the same

Describe some interesting news that you have recently read about or heard about
You should say:
what the story was
who was involved in the story
where you read or heard about this story
and explain why this news story was interesting to you.
Sample:
Okay, Im going to tell you the story or a story I read in a newspaper recently - it wasnt front
page news it didnt hit the headlines or anything like that but it was one of those almost human
interest stories that I find fascinating.
It was about a group of men led by a fifty year old who decided that they would row from
Canada I think it was to the Magnetic North Pole and that was a distance of about 450 miles.
What was so interesting about the story was the idea of rowing to the North Pole which is
supposed to covered by ice and the reason this group of people decided to do it was to highlight
the fact that climate change had impacted the polar cap and to they wanted to draw
everybodys attention to the seriousness of this issue.
And another reason I found it fascinating was well it was just a very adventurous story. The
idea of sort of rowing through ice floes and I suppose I have a personal interest here because
when I was at university I used to row myself and I know how difficult it is just to row on a river
but on the ocean, trying to navigate through all those ice floes thats really quite something

Describe a beautiful garden that you like. You should say
- where it is
- what you can see there
- what people do there
and explain why you like it.
Today I'd like to describe my home garden, which I think is a beautiful one and which I like very
much. The garden is part of my home's backyard, and my house is LOCATED IN THE
SUBURBS, about a 1-hour drive from the city of San Francisco. There is a big tree right in the
middle of my garden, which is SURROUNDED BY a hot tub, a small water fountain,
SEVERAL BUSHES, a section for vegetables, and DIFFERENT KINDS OF FLOWERS.
This garden was actually ONE OF THE REASONS why my wife and I chose to buy our house
because it had been BEAUTIFULLY MAINTAINED by the previous owners GARDENER
AND LANDSCAPER. Its been only 1 year since we bought the house and now we are taking
care of the garden ourselves. Even though we are not EXPERTS IN gardening, we still try our
best to plant things that we like, such as roses and tulips, and we even grow our own tomatoes.
Whenever family and friends come to visit us, we invite them to have a relaxing time in our hot
tub, and ENJOY THE VIEW. So IN OTHER WORDS, our garden has also become a kind of
resort! It DEFINITELY REQUIRES LOTS OF HARD WORK to PROPERLY MAINTAIN the
garden, but it gives us a GREAT SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT to decorate it the way we
like.
All in all, the garden is one of the BEST FEATURES of my home and it is a place where I can
relax after a long day of work or during the weekends.

what it was about
why you think it was an interesting advertisement.
I'm going to talk about an advertisement for Coca-Cola, which is one of the BIGGEST BRANDS
in the world. I've seen Coke advertised everywhere, on posters and TV commercials.
The advert shows a picture of Santa Claus smiling and holding a bottle of Coke. I think THE
AIM IS TO TARGET CHILDREN and ASSOCIATE (LINK/CONNECT) THE BRAND WITH
Christmas time.
The advert is interesting because the company is DELIBERATELY TRYING TO INFLUENCE
AND ATTRACT children. The marketers are trying to CAPTURE YOUNG CUSTOMERS.
They are presenting the drink as something special, a gift for Christmas. However, Coca-Cola is
not necessarily a healthy drink for children; it contains a lot of sugar. Maybe this kind of

- In your country, what possessions show a higher status or position in society?
- In my country, people who are WEALTHY TEND TO buy big houses and cars. Certain makes
of car such as Mercedes or Ferrari are STATUS SYMBOLS. They let other people know that
you are important or powerful. People who want to GIVE THIS IMPRESSION often WEAR
EXPENSIVE DESIGNER CLOTHES, or WATCHES BY BRANDS like Rolex.
- Do you think we place too much importance on possessions?
- PROBABLY, YES. Some people are OBSESSED WITH showing off their new mobile phone
or wearing the LATEST FASHIONS. I think it's a problem for teenagers because there's a lot of
PEER PRESSURE to follow fashion or buy the LATEST GADGET that their friends have got.
- Do you think things were different 50 years ago?
- Yes, maybe people were LESS MATERIALISTIC. I think they bought things that LASTED

Maybe brands and advertising weren't as POWERFUL as they are now.

[IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLE] TAKS 3 INTERNET

Mt ch quen thuc nhng cc cu hi c bin i hi kh mt t, gi gn vo ch
mua sm trn Internet
- Do you think people take notice of advertisements on the internet?
- Despite the fact that there are many adverts on the internet these days, I think actually many
people tend to ignore them, or at least that is my experience. People usually go onto the internet
to find something specific that they are looking for, which may be a product, or to read about
something, so they will ignore what is not relevant to that. But of course there is no doubt that
some people take notice of them. Advertising on the internet is a practice most companies take
part in now, and they have to pay quite substantial sums to advertise on highly ranked sites. Of
course they would not do this if it were not attracting customers for them.
- How do you think it will change people's buying habits in the future?
- Buying from the internet is becoming more and more popular. For example, weve seen many
book shops close down because people can buy online at cheaper prices from sites such as
Amazon. It makes life much easier if products can be delivered direct to our door, especially
with our busy modern lifestyles. We dont have wait for long hours in the supermarket. I think
this will only increase in the future as more people feel safe to buy online and online shops make
it easier to purchase this way. Also, I think our lives are only going to become busier, so more
people will choose to shop this way.
- Are there any disadvantages to shopping on the internet?
- There certainly are some. Firstly, buying clothes can be a problem. When you go into a shop
you can check what you are buying fits you and suits you, but it is obviously not possible to do
this online. Shopping does not become less hassle if you have to send something back in the post.
Another problem is the security. We have to give out our bank details to people we dont know.
There have been several recent reports in the press about sites that have had their security
breached and credit card details have been stolen. So far this is fairly uncommon, but it is a risk
none the same. Another disadvantage is to society as it could destroy local shops and businesses
if people are not going out to shop in their local town

My favorite teacher ever is Mr. C, not only because of his teaching methods but also of his
influence on my life. He was my math teacher when I was in grade 11 of high school. Before
having classes with him, Math had been a nightmare for me, made me confused all the time
when I got stuck with numbers and especially with geometry problems. When Mr. C had first
class with us, our classmates and me were so impressed. He was looking very charming at his
middle 40s, in a blue shirt and a dark blue tie. But what outstands from him was white glasses
that suited him and his friendly smile. After the first class, we were very happy because with him,
Math became so comprehensible. He was so strict but supportive and trustworthy. When he gave
us homework, it must have done before classes; otherwise, we would get in trouble: detentions,
or having a talk with our principle. However, he always gave us a hand when we had problems
of understanding new concepts in Math or even listening to then giving us advices on personal

teacher). At the point of choosing the university I would register for the entrance exams, I was
struggling. I didn't know what job I want to do, what would fit me most. I was worried and
couldn't sleep for nights. I was noticed by him and he seemed to see my abilities and potential, so
he spent 2 hours talking with me about jobs that were considered high paid at that time, and jobs
that I would love to do. Finally, I decided to choose journalism as my future career. Without his

gives me advices whenever I need as we've still been in contact. Now, I think of him as a family
member, a teacher and a great friend.

1. What is the relationship between leisure and the economy?
Well, people SPEND A LOT OF MONEY ON ALL SORTS OF LEISURE ACTIVITIES
nowadays, so I think leisure is a very important part of the economy of most countries. Leisure
could be anything that people do in their free time, such as eating out, going to the cinema,
watching a football match, or staying in a hotel. Millions of people are employed in these areas.
2. How does the economy benefit from people's leisure activities?
The LEISURE INDUSTRY MAKES A HUGE CONTRIBUTION TO THE ECONOMY. As I
said before, it KEEPS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN EMPLOYMENT, and all of these employees
pay their taxes and have money to spend on other goods and services. At the same time, most
people SPEND SOME OF THEIR EARNINGS ON LEISURE ACTIVITIES, and this money
therefore goes back into the economy.
3. Do men and women enjoy the same type of leisure activities?
Yes and no. I think both men and women enjoy things like eating in restaurants or going to the
cinema, but I'm sure there are other activities that are MORE POPULAR WITH ONE GENDER.
For example, I think more men than women go to football matches

[SPEAKING SAMPLE] Part 3: EMOTIONS

Hi mem,
- Do you think its good to show your emotions when youre angry?
- I think it DEPENDS ON THE SITUATION and HOW YOU SHOW YOUR EMOTIONS. I
find that if Im angry with a friend or someone in my family, its best to tell them what the
problem is and TRY TO EXPRESS how I feel. However, I dont think IT HELPS TO ARGUE
with people when youre angry; its better to CONTROL THE ANGER and EXPLAIN
WHATS WRONG.
- In your opinion, do women show their emotions more than men?
- The STEREOTYPICAL VIEW is that women are more emotional, and in my experience
THERE IS SOME TRUTH IN THIS; my mother, for example, tends to show her feelings much
MORE READILY than my father. However, Im sure that THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS TO
THE STEREOTYPE.
- Why do you think men tend to show their emotions less than women?
- Maybe its because of THE WAY WE ARE BROUGHT UP. I think that boys are OFTEN
TAUGHT FROM AN EARLY AGE not to cry. Also, boys are aware that their friends might see
it AS A SIGN OF WEAKNESS if they show their feelings. Perhaps girls are brought up to be
MORE SENSITIVE TO THEIR FRIENDS' FEELINGS.
SPEAKING SAMPLES] TASK 1 "NUMBERS"
1) Do you have a favourite number or a number that is special to you?
Yes, my favourite number is... because it's the day I was born on, and it's my lucky number.
2) Do any numbers have special importance in your country?
Yes, certain ages are special. For example, your 18th birthday is important because it's when you
are considered to become an adult.
3) Are you good at remembering numbers? Why / why not?
No, I'm not very good at remembering numbers. I don't think it's necessary to learn them by heart;
I just save them on my phone.
4) What numbers do people often have to memorise?
The most important number to remember on a daily basis is the pin number for your bank card.
Without this you can't pay for anything or get cash out.
SPEAKING SAMPLES PART 1 'TIME'
1. Are you good at managing your time?
Actually I'd say I'm not too good! I don't really have a system in place to organize things. I know
some people have an electronic organizer or use some device to plan what they are doing but I
don't do that. But I always make sure I am on time for appointments and things like that, and I
meet deadlines and get things done.
2. How do you manage your time?
As I said, I don't have any specific system in place to manage my time. For example, if I am at
work and I have a lot of cases, I just go through them each day and decide which I need to tackle
first. At work we do have an online diary which I guess I use, so in that sense I do manage my
time to an extent.
3. When is it most important for you to manage your time?
I think it is probably when you are at work. When out of work, it's not really going to affect
Tng hp by Heo admin page LUYN NGHE TING ANH

things too much, or at least only yourself, if you are late to meet friends or for an appointment, or
if you are getting things done in your house. But at work, it will cause problems if you don't
manage your time effectively because you could miss deadlines or miss appointments. You could
lose your job. So at work is when it is most important to manage your time
SPEAKING SAMPLE PART 3 'FESTIVALS'
1. Do you have festivals in your country?
Yes, we do, we have many in our culture and as there are various ethnic groups within Vietnam
there are some celebrations which are universal and others which only certain groups of people
celebrate.
2. Tell me about a local celebration in your town.
OK, there are a few, but apart from the big ones like Tet which is celebrated throughout the
country, I can tell you about the Co Loa Festival which is a special parade which passes through
several different locations throughout Hanoi and as part of the parade there are some interesting
things to see such as wrestling and cockfighting. The parade normally happens in February each
year. It is based on the legend about An Duong King who came from Au Lac and he had a magic
crossbow. The legend says that a Golden Tortoise, presented An Duong Vuong with a very
powerful magic crossbow that could kill many enemy soldiers with only one shot. But the kings
daughter told the secret of the magic crossbow to her husband - he was the rebel leader's son the legend says that when her father realized he had been betrayed by his own daughter, he killed
her and then killed himself.
3. What is the relevance of international festivals or celebrations to the worlds community?
When it's international I think it's very important because it allows us to learn more and
understand more about different countries and their cultures. It's always interesting to read about
these things but to actually see examples at festivals or international events is much better - and
sometimes you can meet and talk to the participants. It is a good thing for international relations
and that is imortant as many people are becoming more mobile and ned to be aware of different
aspects of life in various parts of the world.
SPEAKING SAMPLE PART 1 'WEATHER'
1. Lets talk about the weather. What is the weather like in your country?
Its generally warm all year round, between 18C and 32C, and there are two distinct periods or
seasons, a dry one and then the rainy season. The rainy season only lasts for about three months
so its quite short, most of the year its dry with just some occasional light showers.
2. What weather do you like more, hot or cold? Why?
Hot, definitely. I dont like cold weather, I think its horrible. I think hot, or warm, weather is
much better, everything is easier, you can wear fewer clothes, you dont have to heat your house
or apartment and its much nicer to spend time outside.
3. Do you think you can live in extreme hot or extreme cold conditions? Why?
Personally, I wouldnt really want to live in either of the extremes, but some people do. There are
people who live in very cold places and others who live in incredibly hot climates. I suppose they
are used to it so they never really think about it much. I prefer when the climate is comfortable
rather than extremely hot or cold. I guess the people who do live in locations where the climate is
extreme do so because thats where they were born and its normal for them.

how long it took you to save enough money to buy it

why you wanted to buy this thing
how you got (or, earned) the money
and explain how you felt when (or, after) you bought it.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Ill tell you about my first car. I bought it when I was 17 years old so it was very special for me
because it changed my life. I became more independent and went to all kinds of places I
wouldnt have gone without it.
I had decided to buy a car about six months before I actually bought it. I wanted to have a car
because where I was studying was quite far away and getting the bus everyday was a bit of a
hassle.
At that time, I was also working part-time in a local restaurant at nights and sometimes we used
to finish working quite late and getting a bus home was a problem. Quite often one of the other
workers had to give me a lift or I had to take a taxi, which was expensive. So I basically wanted
to be more independent and not have to worry about using public transport anymore.
Obviously, I couldnt afford a new car, but I started to save as much money each week as I could.
I even took on an extra part-time job at the weekends which helped me to save even more money
faster. I stopped going out so much and was very careful with the money I spent on other things
while I was saving. After about six months, I realized I had enough to think about buying a
second hand or used car. I spent some time looking through the local paper to see what was
available and went to a couple of local car dealers with a friend to look at some cars for sale.
In the end, I finally bought a used car from a man who lived quite close to me. It was an old car,
but it was in good condition and he had looked after it well. He had been the only owner of the
car since it was new, so that made me feel confident that it would be a good buy.
Not surprisingly, I was very excited after buying it and spent all my spare time driving around
visiting places or taking my friends out for trips. It was great to be able to go anywhere, anytime
without having to worry about buses or taxis again. I kept that car for around two years and it
never gave me any problems. Eventually, I decided to exchange it for a newer and better model
one.
I had saved up some more money, but Ill never forget my first car it was a really important
change in my life.
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 2- SKILLS]
Talk about a skill you have learned to do very well (eg. cooking or driving), please say:
- What skill did you acquire?
- How did you acquire that skill?
- How is it important for you?
and if you want to learn more about this skill.
SAMPLE ANSWER
When I was a little girl I used to love dancing to music so my mother took me to dance classes. I
loved them and learned lots of different styles of dancing. I started when I was about 7 or 8 years
old and practiced all through the time I attended school. I even entered some competitions but I
never won them, there were always girls better than me.
Competing wasn't really important for me though, I just loved dancing and the rhythm and the
movements and stretching helped me keep fit. I didn't really appreciate it when I was younger
but I think I lerned a lot of self-discipline from my dance classes when I was a little girl. I also

learned that if you keep practicing then even something which seemed impossible can become
easy or at least easier, so I guess I learned perseverance also.
My teacher was an ex-ballet dancer trained in classical dance in France, but she also taught us
more modern dancing too so I grew up appreciating many different types of dancing. Even now I
still love to dance and find it very comforting ... almost therapeutic you might say ... it helps me
relax.
I'm not sure if I would learn or study more about dancing now, I'm more interested in drama and
acting, but I will always be very grateful to my mother for giving me the chance to learn and take
dance classes and to my dance teacher for giving me such a special gift that I can still enjoy now.
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 2 - A JOURNEY]
Describe a journey [e.g. by car, plane, boat] that you remember well. You should say:
where you went
how you travelled
why you went on the journey
and explain why you remember this journey well.
SAMPLE ANSWER
I'd like to tell you about a trip I took with three friends of mine about a year ago. We were in
Mexico and we decided to hire a car and travel around the country for four weeks. We did some
planning before we set off, but not that much, we wanted it to be like an adventure. We chose
one of the major areas in the North, East, West and South of the country to visit and planned to
visit some other intersting places while traveliing between those four major areas.
We all took turns driving and it was truly a great trip, one that I'm sure we'll all remember for a
long time. Like I said, we didn't really have a plan but we wanted to see as much of the country
as we could in the time we had free.... so we just used to drive for a couple of hours and then stop
in a village or town and take a walk around and see some of the sights, have something to eat and
drink and relax a little. Then we'd continue on to the next place we had marked on our map.
In the evenings we would find a hotel and settle in for the night, go for something to eat, maybe
go to a bar or restaurant and have a look around the place. We met some very interesting people
and also had some good times... we spent one evening dancing with mariachi bands and I can
remember we met a group of foreign students on another evening in a restaurant, they were from
Europe, and we spent a lot of time talking with them.
There are various reasons I will never forget that particular trip. One of them is the sheer size of
the country... it's massive, and each area is different, there's a lot of diversity in terms of the
climate, the enviornment and people and so on. Then there were specific moments that are
unforgettable like driving across the desert which lasted for hours and hours... it was truly
immense and we only saw one other vehicle while we were driving... and spending Christmas in
Cancun was great fun, on the beach having a great time together. Really, so many happy
memories we all have from the time we spent traveling and exploring. The whole experience was
just amazing!
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 3]
1. What do you conside to be the most important factors relating to the place where you
work/study?
Well, as I said, this university has an excellent academic reputation, an international student
body, the staff are very good, and many people who work in the ministry of commerce studied
Tng hp by Heo admin page LUYN NGHE TING ANH

here in the past. As I am studying Economics and would like to work in the ministry in the future,
these were some of the reasons why I chose to study here. It seemed the most logical choice.
2. Should work-at-home jobs be well paid or not? [Why/Why not?]
I think it depends on the job. Nowadays many executives and professionals do some or all of thir
work from home, thanks to technology allowing them to communicate from wherever they are.
But there are also people who do manual work at home, making things to sell at markets. There
is a big difference between the type of work people might be able to do at home, so it's sensible
that what they earn depends on what they do - not where they do it.
3. What is the situation with work-at-home jobs in your country currently?
Honestly, I'm not sure, I know that soome artisans work from home and my father, who is a
corpoarte lawyer, spends maybe half of his time working at home and the rest of the time in
meeting s with clients and in the offices of his company. Apart from that I know that there are
many jobs where people work from home using the internet in some countries but here I'm not
sure... I've never really thought about it or looked into it.
4. What do you think will be the situation regarding work-at-home jobs 10 years from now?
I think that more people will work from home, especially professional people. There are many
advantages, it can save time and travel, allow more people to do more work and there are many
new careers which are based on technology nowadays and these are perfect for people working
from home because they really don't need to go to an office or factory every day to do their work.
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 3 - SHOPPING]
1. What do you think are the advantages of buying things from shops rather than markets?
Well, the obvious one is the shop is a permanent location while the market is not. I guess it
depends on what you're buying though, but for example, would you buy domestic appliances
from a market? Imagine you had a problem with it and never saw the person who sold it to you
again. Shops don't depend on the weather either, I mean if it was raining I definitely wouldn't go
strolling round a market looking for things to buy. With a shop, that's not really a problem. I
suppose you usually get a better selection of goods in a shop as well, because they can carry
more stock.
2. How does advertising influence what people choose to buy? Is this true for everyone?
I think advertising only influences a certain group of people, normally younger people who are
easily influenced. Older people don't seem to find advertising as interesting. They seem to buy
things based on their needs rather than some smart and catchy marketing campaign. The big
brand names are expert at trying to influence young people with their slick advertisements and
publicity and they are always trying to convince us that we need to have the newest and latest of
everything, even if the item we have at the moment is perfectly good. But that's the economy
now isn't it? If we stop consuming, we will have serious economic problems.
3. Do you think that any recent changes in the way people live have affected general shopping
habits? Why is this?
Absolutely, this generation and the internet is changing the game totally. Almost half the
population in this country have a smartphone or other mobile device now and most of them buy
things on the internet. We can already see the decline of business in the high street in many cities.
Lots of small shops have already gone out of business and even some large chain stores that
couldn't compete with online shopping.
Tng hp by Heo admin page LUYN NGHE TING ANH
Source from pages: LUYN SPEAKING IELTS v RELIABLE ENGLISH SCHOOL

It was the same some years ago when we first started to see the development of out-of-town
hypermarkets, and now they are beginning to suffer too thanks to the amount of online shopping.
Let's face it, most people are quire lazy. If you give them options they'll usually choose the one
which means not having to leave the house or get in the car and travel - that's the internet. It's
hard to beat it, and yes, it's changed shopping habits totally
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 1 - TELEPHONING]
1. How often do you make telephone calls? [Why/Why not?]
To be honest, it's not very often, maybe once or twice a month. I usually text people more than
actually call people on the phone. Really, the only person I still call is my grandmother but like I
said, it's only a couple of times a month that we speak.
2. Who do you spend most time talking to on the telephone? [Why?]
My grandmother, we don't talk that often but when I do call her we normally speak for at least
half an hour and more often than not it's longer than that. I used to live close to her, but since I
moved here I can't visit her as often so when I call her I like to hear all her news and she always
asks me about what I've been doing.
3. When do you think youll next make a telephone call? [Why?]
I'll probably call my grandmother in the next couple of days so we can catch up with each other.
I spoke to her early last week but I'd like to call her soon and find out how she is and what she's
been doing. maybe I'll call her on Friday afternoon when I have some free time so we can have a
really long chat.
4. Do you sometimes prefer to send a text message instead of telephoning? [Why/Why not?]
Yes, almost always. Texting is much easier and quicker and people can't listen to your
conversations. As I said before, my grandmother is really the only person I call because she likes
it, but I generally text everyone else... it's so much better, you can choose when you send each
text, you can do things in-between texting and if the other person is busy for a few minutes they
can text back later but the conversation still continues, it's more conveninent than calling.
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 2 - REASONS FOR DAILY TRAVEL]
1. Why do people need to travel every day?
Well, I suppose the main reasons are to go to work, school or university so they can attend their
jobs, classes or whatever they need to do. They may need to simply tavel to their office and then
stay there all day, or maybe they need to travel as part of their work, visiting customers or clients
or fly to another city for an important meeting.
2. What problems can people have when they are on their daily journey to work or school for
example? Why is this?
I suppose one of the most common ones would be traffic jams, which can sometimes be very bad
at peak hours when everybody is trying to travel at the same time. Or maybe they miss the bus or
train because they were a little late - and then have to wait for the next bus or train but arrive late
at work or wherever they needed to go. Then of course they could be involved in a traffic
accident, especially if they're driving, and that can cause a lot of problems for them.
3. Some people say that daily journeys like these will not be so common in the future. Do you
agree or disagree? Why?
That's probably true, I mean more and more people are working from home now or even working
on projects in different countries using technology and so they don't need to physically travel to
an office to do their work. It would certainly make traffic less of a problem in big cities if more
people could do that. Another factor which could reduce the necessity for these daily trips is the
Tng hp by Heo admin page LUYN NGHE TING ANH
Source from pages: LUYN SPEAKING IELTS v RELIABLE ENGLISH SCHOOL

fact that many universities are now offering their courses online so students don't have to travel
to the campus every day... and it's highly probable that more work will be done in the future
without the need for employees to be sitting in a company office.
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 2]
Talk about a place where you stayed away from home. Please say:
Where was this place?
Why did you go there?
How long did you stay there?
How did you feel staying away from home?
I remember a few years ago when I was on vacation from university I went to stay with my
grandmother in Livorno on the coast. I spent two months there, helping her with some work
around the house and also writing my thesis for university.
She has a very old house near the coast and it has an amazing view of the sea. It was completely
different from living in Rome, where I grew up as a child. The air is cleaner and the town is
much smaller and quieter so it was a very nice change of pace to live there for the summer. I had
visited several times before when I was a child but had never stayed more than a day or so and I
had always gone with my parents before this time I went by myself so it was quite different.
It was a really nice time and its also a really good place to live. It was very relaxing and
refreshing to see something different and to meet some of the local people who are quite
different from the people I usually hang out with in Rome. If I wasnt working in the bank and
living in Rome I would maybe like to live in a place like that where life is slower and more
relaxed, somewhere out of the city, but at the moment Im concentrating on my career so the city
has the best opportunities.
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 3 - ADVERTISING]
1. Do you think advertising influences what people buy?
Yes, definitely. If there were no advertising and you went to a shop, then you would just buy
what you wanted based on maybe what others have told you, what the product looks like, or,
depending on the product, what it says on the label. Advertising builds up a brand and people
then trust a certain thing because they have seen it on television or elsewhere. Also, there is so
much advertising around it must influence us. You cant escape it as it is fed to us constantly in
our daily lives not only in magazines, radio and television, but on billboards, on TVs installed
on trains and platforms, even in schools and universities. So yes, advertising influences what we
buy.
2. Do advertisements give correct information, or do they encourage people to buy things that
they may not need?
I think some do and some dont, but its difficult to know which are giving us the correct
information. For example, the skin whitening products I do not believe that these work but we
see them everywhere in Asian countries, and we are encouraged to buy them even though they
are not actually necessary. The adverts, though, tell us they are necessary as they will improve
our lives and we will become more accepted and successful. This then, is an example of
advertising encouraging people to buy something they do not need. I do think there are checks in
most countries these days to make sure that adverts are giving the correct information and not
lying to people, but I think it is still easy for advertisers to exaggerate or to do this without
breaking the regulations.
3. Is advertising really necessary in modern society?
Tng hp by Heo admin page LUYN NGHE TING ANH
Source from pages: LUYN SPEAKING IELTS v RELIABLE ENGLISH SCHOOL

It could be seen to be necessary in terms of the fact that, as I mentioned before, there is so much
choice that we need someone to guide us in what to buy or to give us some extra information
about products. Without this, it would be difficult to know where to start. However, that said,
Im not sure that I would regard it as necessary as overall I think it may do more harm than
good. As we just discussed, advertising encourages people to buy things they possibly do not
need. We live in a consumer society and many people are in debt because we are encouraged to
buy and buy, and Im sure advertising plays a major role in this. Without advertising we could
just do our own research and decide what we really need. So no, I would not say that advertising
in necessary in modern society.

[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 3 - OLD BUILDINGS]

1. Is it important to conserve old buildings? Why?
Personally, I like old buildings and history so for me its a good idea to protect and preserve
them. We can learn a lot about our history from the buildings of the past and its fascinating for
children to see how people used to live many centuries ago. They are a very important part of our
national culture and heritage.
2. Is the history useful for the coming generations? Why?
If people are interested in it, then it can be useful, yes. You can learn how the world was in the
past, which countries had wars with each other and how and why cities developed where they
did and many other interesting things. Without history we wouldnt have any sense of
belonging to a place as people.
Maybe people many years in the future will look back at us in the 21st century and be amazed at
the things we did and how we lived. Theyll probably have more than just buildings to study
theyll be able to see cars, TVs and all the other things which make up life for us at the
moment...so yes it could be useful for them as a way to understand what was happening in the
world.
3. What is the difference between houses built in the past and now?
I suppose the main difference would be the type of materials used to construct them. Old houses
used to be built using stone and they were also bigger than most houses built today. Most of the
houses were built simply as somewhere to provide shelter and a degree of comfort. Nowadays,
houses are built with a lot more planning and technology involved. They are designed to be
energy efficient, use recyclable raw materials or eco-friendly resources and are designed to

optimize space and their impact on the environment as well as provide a comfortable place for
people to live.
4. What are the differences in sizes of houses? Why?
In general, I believe that houses today are smaller than houses which were built centuries ago.
We also tend to build more apartments in cities than houses in the country so the size is quite
different from before. Even large houses nowadays take up less space than a large house
centuries ago.
5. Do you prefer a big or a small house? Why?
I like to have space, but it doesnt need to be an extremely big house. I live in an apartment here
in Melbourne at the moment and its really nice. I share with two other students and we each
have our own room, theres a kitchen and two bathrooms, a living area, a utility room and a
balcony with a nice view. Really, thats big enough for me. I wouldnt want to live in a really big
house, even if I could afford to buy one but I wouldnt want to live in a really small house
either. Like I said, I prefer some space I dont like feeling cramped.
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 3]
1. Are lawyers respected in your country? [Why? / Why not?]
Yes, it's a good profession and they are resonably well paid if they work for a good comapny. I
think they are respected because they have to study and prepare a lot, similar to doctors.
2. In your opinion is it fair that lawyers are paid very well?
Firstly, not all lawyers are paid very well. Like in most countries, lawyers who work in public
service for the government don't earn very big salaries, well, not as much as a lawyer working
for an international company or a tax lawyer for example. Is it fair? I think that if the labor
market decides that a lawyer should earn a lot becasue of the type of work they do or because
they have a lot of responsibility then that is ok. I mean it's like a soccer player or film star - why
do they earn so much money - because the soccer club or the film company decide that they are
worth it or maybe they have skills or knowledge that only a few people possess - which make
them rare.
3. Do you think that being a policeman is a good career choice? What are some of the advantages
or disadvantages of this profession?
It's a good choice if you want to develop a career in the long term. There is a lot of structure and
opportunities within the police. You cal also learn skills that are transferrable to civilian jobs in
the future. I have a cousin who is in the police and he loves it. He says the pay is good and the
benefits and pension after many years of service are better than in many ordinary jobs.
4. Do you agree that all policemen should have guns?
I'm not sure. I think it depends on where they are and what their responsibilities are. For the
police here it's normal, but there are some countries where they don't have all police officers
armed. They have special armed squads for when it's necessary. But some countries have less
armed attacks or violence than others so I think whether or not the police are armed is based on
the local circumstances. I think they should be armed if it's likely they will need to deal with
armed criminals or violent situations. [IELTS SPEAKING - PART 2]

what he/she has done to help people

and explain how you know about this person.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Okay, Id like to tell you about a person I learned about when I watched a documentary on
YouTube. It was about Bob Geldof and the Live Aid concert which helped many people starving
to death in Ethiopia. Ill tell you what I can remember about him and the event.
He was a pop singer in a band in the 1980s in the UK and one night he saw a report on the TV
about a dreadful famine in Ethiopia and he was very moved by the pictures and the report of
hundreds of thousands of people starving and homeless all camped out on a plain in Ethiopia.
He decided to organize a song for charity with some of the big pop stars of that time; I think
some of them were his friends, in order to raise money to send food over there. They wrote and
produced a song with many different popular artists all singing together which helped raise
awareness and a lot of money for charity.
Following the success of that event, he visited Ethiopia personally and saw what was happening
there. He discovered there were many other problems, such as transport, which meant that
although food aid had arrived in the country it couldnt be transported to where the people
needed it most.
When he returned to his own country he talked to lots of people and the prime minister about the
problem and asked why nothing was being done. I think he felt frustrated by the lack of
involvement from some officials and charities to solve the problems.
He came up with the idea to have a live music concert which was called Live Aid to raise more
money to help the people suffering from the famine. It was the largest concert ever done
anywhere in the world at that time. There was a live concert in England, in the UK, and another
one in Philadelphia, in the USA. The two events were linked by satellite and televised all around
the world.
The biggest and most popular artists took part in the event and it was a huge success. The money
which was raised helped to alleviate some of the problems that the people in Ethiopia were
suffering from and changed the way in which a lot of charities worked to solve problems
worldwide.
I think it was the first time that one individual had done something really different from the
normal methods of fundraising for natural disasters which happen around the world.
[IELTS SPEAKING - PART 3 - EDUCATION]
1. What is the difference between the role of a teacher and a parent in the education of children?
Well, primarily, I think parents are more responsible for imparting values and ethics to their
children and teachers at school are given the task of equipping children with academic skills.
You could also say that parents educate more by example, how they do things and react to
things whereas teachers teach children how to do things based on a curriculum designed by
educational experts, its not such a personal experience.
2. What suggestions would you give to teachers to improve education?
I know when I was at school some of the subjects seemed very uninteresting to us as students. I
think maybe teachers need to look at how they relate the subject matter to the real world or the
students experience of the real world. I know they are now using more technology in schools
than before and this is a good thing. In general, students have to see that something is relevant, or
at least interesting, so if teachers can make it obvious why its important to learn something then
maybe students will be more interested.

3. What is the best way to educate children in your opinion?

Children need to be taught real skills, things which will be relevant in their future life. They need
to learn what will be needed by society in the future. Most children seem to learn quicker by
doing things than listening to teachers talking about something. If children can be involved in a
variety of activities that help develop the skills they need then I think they will learn successfully.
4. How can we help children realise their talents?
The first thing is to identify those talents. That is not an easy thing to do in many cases. Its then
a case of making sure that children receive support and the resources to explore and develop their
talent to the fullest. Schools need to be able to give children access to equipment, resources or
facilities that they may not have in the home environment or that their parents cannot provide.
5. Does the government provide enough support to education in your view?
They can always provide more but its not the quantity so much as the quality of support they
provide. It must be relevant and focused on the key areas of education. It must be well planned
and provide the best possible resources and facilities for children to grow and develop their
academic and life skills.
