Responsible behavior is essential, horseplay in the lab will NOT be tolerated.

Wear goggles, lab apron, and closed toed shoes, as assigned, AT ALL TIMES while in the lab.
Think about what you are doing. Plan ahead in order to prevent mistakes and accidents.
Keep your lab area neat. Push all stools (if any) under the tables when youre not sitting on them. Clean up your
work space by wiping down the table and putting away all materials at the end of the lab period.
Notify your teacher of any spills or broken glass immediately. Follow instructions for clean up procedures.
Do not eat or drink anything at the laboratory tables, ever.
Keep your hands away from your mouth and eyes while in the lab and handling materials. Wash your hands with
soap and water after every lab. Wash all chemicals off of your skin with large quantities of running water.
If a chemical gets in your eye, inform your instructor and flush your eyes at the eye-wash station for 20 minutes.
Do not perform any unauthorized experiments. This includes using ONLY the quantities instructed and no more.
Consult your instructor if you have any doubts about the instructions BEFORE you perform something, not after.
In case of fire or accident, inform the instructor at once. Note the location of the fire extinguisher(s), fire blanket,
and safety showers so you can use them if necessary.
Report all injuries to your instructor at once.
Avoid breathing fumes of any kind. To test the smell of a vapor, waft the fumes in the direction of your nose.
Never smell a reaction as it is occurring.
Work in a fume hood if there is a possibility that noxious or poisonous vapors may be produced.
Never work alone in the lab. There must always be at least one other person as well as an instructor present.
Confine long hair and loose clothing in the lab. It is at danger of catching fire or being chemically contaminated.
Do not put any substance into a flame unless instructed to do so and never reach out over an open flame.
Never use broken or chipped glassware. Carry glassware in the vertical position to avoid breakage, and dispose in
the proper broken glassware receptacle when damaged.
Be careful when heating liquids. Hot glass looks the same as cold glass. Use proper handling materials.
Never heat flammable liquids over an open flame.
Always pour acids into water when mixing, otherwise they will splatter violently.
Do not force a rubber stopper onto glass tubing or thermometers. Lubricate the tubing with glycerol or water. Use
paper or cloth towel to protect your hands and grasp the glass close to the stopper.
Dispose of excess liquids by flushing small quantities down the sink with running water. Consult the instructor if
you are unsure if something should be flushed down the sink. Never return chemicals to their original bottle.
Carefully read the experiment and questions in the pre-lab BEFORE coming to the laboratory.
Spatters are common in a general chemistry lab. Test tubes being heated or containing reacting mixtures should
NEVER be pointed at anyone to prevent an accident.
It is not recommended that you wear contact lenses in the laboratory, even with goggles. Contact lenses prevent
rinsing chemical splash from the eye. Vapors in the laboratory dissolve in the liquids covering the eye and
concentrate behind the lenses.
Select one: I wear contacts routinely _____
I do not wear contacts routinely _____
In the space below, indicate any allergy or asthma problems you are aware of. If none, write None.

My parents and I have read the above laboratory safety rules and agree that I will follow each of them.
If I do not, we understand that I will be removed from the lab and may receive a zero for the lab grade.
