Prophecies Of Jesus

Summer Series 2015

Introduction:
As we begin our summer series this week, we will be focusing on
discussing the life, death, and significance of our Savior and the
importance of His teachings. We have heard many stand before an
audience and talk about Jesus Christ calling Him, Our Savior, The
Prince of Peace, Immanuel, The Great Shepard, and The Son Of God.
We have been told of how He lived His life some 2,000 years ago and
have been told that He is still living today. Whether or not you have
believed in His name and believe that Jesus was whom He claimed to
be, for this sermon we are going to focus on just a small number of
passages to help support His claim in Luke 22:66-71. When standing
before the Sanhedrin, near the end of His life, Jesus was asked, Are
you the Son Of God? Jesus then confidently replies, Yes I am. I point
this out because some believe these prophecies made regarding when
our Savior would come, either have not yet been fulfilled or claim that
they are vague and open unto interpretation. It is our goal to see that
these prophecies made were specific and could only be applied to one,
and to understand that Jesus was not just some guy claiming to be our
savior just for attention. For, if that were to be the case, why would He
be so confident and stay true to His claims all throughout His life and
be willing to be crucified? In the scriptures, we have 353 prophecies

about Jesus, discussing the circumstances of his birth and of the

teachings and events that would happen during His life and lastly we
can read prophecies of how he would die and even specific things that
would be said while He was hung on the cross. And we will hopefully
be able to understand that Jesus life was planned out from the very
beginning to the end.

Prophecies of Birth:
In Genesis 3:15 we read of the first prophecy of Jesus coming
down to Earth for our salvation. From the moment that man committed
sin, the plan of salvation was being put into play. It is important to read
this because it shows that Jesus was going to come down to the Earth
from the very moment that man allowed for sin to come into the world,
and God understood that we would need a sacrifice to help wash away
our sins. In Genesis 12:3 we can read about the lineage of Jesus,
when God made the promise to Abraham saying that all Nations will
come from him. Going along with that we can understand that Jesus
would be a descendant of both Isaac and Jacob because they were
sons of Abraham and we can read these prophecies in Genesis 17:19
and Numbers 24:17. Each of these prophecies were fulfilled in
Matthew 1:1-2, which is where we can read of the whole lineage of
Jesus. Later in Genesis 49:10 we read of the tribe from which Jesus
would come from, being the tribe of Judah (Luke 3:33). In Micah 5:2

we can read of the town from which Jesus would be born (Luke 2:1-4).
In Isaiah 7:14 it is prophesied that Jesus would be born of a virgin and
in Matthew 1:18-23 we read of Jesus birth to Mary. Now that we have
studied some prophecies about Jesus birth, I now want to look at just a
few prophecies that discuss events that would take place surrounding
His birth. In Jeremiah 31:15 it was prophesied there would be many
children murdered. And we know from reading Matthew 2:16-18 that
Herod had sent out a decree to kill all of the new born males who were
aged 2 years and younger in the area of Bethlehem because he feared
that Jesus would rise to political power and misunderstood that the
scriptures discuss a spiritual kingdom and not a physical Earthly
kingdom. When this decree was being made, Joseph had a vision from
God warning him to flee and go to Egypt. In Hosea 1:11 it was
prophesied that Jesus would be Called forth from Egypt. (Matthew
2:14-15). The final prophecy I want to look at regarding the events
surrounding the birth of Jesus. We read in Isaiah 40:3-5 of Jesus
having the way prepared. In the New Testament we read of this person
being John, the cousin of Jesus and known as the Baptizer in Matthew
11:13-14.

Prophecies of Teachings
We have just studied a small number of the prophecies that were
made about the birth of our Savior, we will now look at some scriptures

that discuss the teachings of Jesus and the effect He would have on
those who listened to what he said. In Psalms 78:1-2 it was said
Jesus would teach using parables and we know by reading through the
New Testament of the numerous lessons Jesus taught using examples
to prove a lesson that everyone in attendance would be able to
understand. (Matthew 13:34-35). Then the prophet Isaiah prophesied
that the Gentiles would seek him in Isaiah 11:10, and we know that
this was fulfilled by reading John 12:18-21. The prophet Isaiah made
many prophecies regarding Jesus and His teachings and life. In Isaiah
42:1-4,7 we can read of our Savior being Faithful and Patient
(Matthew 12:18-21) that our Savior is Meek and Lowly (Matthew
11:28-30), that the Nations will hear his teachings (John 12:28) and
lastly that blind eyes will be opened (John 9:25-38).
As we read through the New Testament, we sometimes wonder
how could the Jews and Pharisees not believe or follow Jesus. We do
not always consider that this could be almost a scary time for the
people at this time. We read of how the Judgment Day is coming when
Christ will return to the Earth and all the events that will take place. It
is hard for us to understand just what this day will be like and
sometimes to understand that this day could come during OUR
lifetime. We have the mindset that it will happen in the future, or
during someone elses lifetime. I wonder how many of us would
actually recognize the Day or believe that the Judgment Day was

actually happening. For the Jews and the population of this time they
had all read of the prophecies of Jesus but struggled to understand that
He had come during their lifetime because they may have had the
same mindset as we do and thought He would come in the Future. This
time wouldve been very difficult for these people because some man
has come into the world and is claiming to be the one whom they have
all been reading about and waiting for. In addition each of us have a
different perception of what the day will be like when we shall be
judged. Each of the Jews had a different perception as to where Jesus
would come from and the family from which He would be born in to. So
we need to keep in mind how much faith it would have taken to follow
Jesus and leave behind all of ones previous beliefs to start a new life.

Prophecies Of Death
Reading through a chart of the prophecies made about Jesus, I
was amazed to see just how many there were about His death and how
specific they were. Since it was planned, Jesus had known how He
would die and what all His death would consist of. He understood from
the beginning that He would be hated without a cause, as was
prophesied in Psalms 69:4 and John 15:18-25 fulfills this prophecy.
Later in Psalms 69:14-20 we read of how Jesus would feel anguish in
His soul. Meaning that He would be troubled and a little nervous about
the events leading unto His crucifixion. (Matthew 26:36-45). He was

so nervous that He prayed unto God three separate times asking for
this cup to pass but always ending with not my will but thine. Of
how He would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver in Zechariah
11:12-13 (we read of how Judas betrayed Jesus in Matthew 26:1415) Isaiah 53:7 prophesied of how Jesus would be silent before His
accusers. (Matthew 27:12-14). Jesus would proclaim It Is Finished
prophesied in Psalms 22:37, (). We are also told of how he would die
before the destruction of the temple in Daniel 9:26, (Matthew
27:50-51). And in Psalms 22:1-18 we read of how Jesus would
proclaim, My God My God why hast thou forsaken me, and how thered
be darkness for three hours, and how the people would say He trusted
in God, let Him deliver him. It was prophesied how he would suffer on
Calvary and they would pierce His hands and feet and part His
garments.

Conclusion:
These scriptures we have read are just a few that demonstrate
just how specific the Bible is about the prophecies made regarding
Jesus birth, teachings, and Death. His life had been planned out
throughouly and during His life He had fulfilled all of the prophecies
made about Him by the prophets. Hopefully as we spent just a short
time studying this we each have been able to understand the validity
of Jesus remark when He claimed to be the Son Of God. We need to

understand that Jesus is the ONLY Savior we will have. (Acts 4:12) and
that the Kingdom of God is everlasting (2 Peter 1:11). John records for
us in REVELATION 14:13 that whatever deeds we do in our lifetime,
they will follow us until the day of judgment. 1ST CORINTHIANS 5:10
tells us that we all will face judgment and we as individuals will have to
give an account for the decisions we have made throughout our
lifetimes. On this day of judgment we are told of another prophecy that
will be fulfilled when Jesus will deliver the kingdom back to God the
father, in 1ST Corinthians 15:24. When judgment day comes, we will
have no more chances. Matt 10:32. If we live out the commandments
of God while we are here on earth and we teach others about the plan
of salvation, once this life is over, Jesus will confess us before the
father. But if we do not live a Godly life or follow all of the
commandments of God, Jesus will deny us. So whatever we have done
up to that point will decide our fate. Have you believed in the words of
Christ? Have you believed that He is our only savior? Have you made
the proper preparations to ensure a home in Heaven? If there is
anyone in the audience who has not made the confession of faith and
been baptized, or maybe you have but have veered off the straight and
narrow come to the front pew and make your desires know as we stand
and sing the song that has been selected.
