CASE STUDY
MEDIA FRANKFURT WELCOMES PASSENGERS TO FRANKFURT AIRPORT
WITH GE LIGHTING COMPONENTS
The LED system installed in the new advertising panel achieves energy savings
of more than 60%.
The Frankfurt international airport (Germany) is among the 10 leading airports in the
world by number of passengers. In 2011, some 56 million passengers, or approximately
154,000 users a day, passed through this airport. The Frankfurt airport is also the worlds
largest cargo airport and one of the busiest in Europe, together with Charles de Gaulle in

Paris and Heathrow in London.

Because of the airports importance and steady growth in 2011 the number of
passengers was up 5.5% over the previous year its installations are always being
enlarged and improved. One of the latest projects was the construction of a new
illuminated arch-shaped structure with two side panels on the main entrance highway to
the airport. In addition to welcoming passengers and visitors, this sign provides a new
digital advertising support that is managed by the German company Media Frankfurt
GmbH.

The new structure, which measures 29 meters wide by 14 meters high, features GE
Lightings energy-efficient, long lasting Tetra PowerStrip LED lighting systems. Up to a
total of 285 LED Modules per sign were installed for this project; this system replaces the
fluorescent light sources in applications that require broad, uniform lighting, as in the
case of this large illuminated advertising panel.
After the installation in January, Simone Schwab, Managing Director of Media Frankfurt
GmbH, said We are thrilled with this new illuminated sign because of its good visibility, its
low environmental impact and the energy savings it provides in comparison to other
systems. From the beginning we attracted our clients with the lead of that amazing,
sustainable, technologically advanced digital advertising project, she added.
This solution provides stable, high performance lighting that is ideal for displaying ads
and emphasizing back-lit areas. One of its best contributions is the excellent visual
appearance provided by the GE OptiLens patent. This system maximizes the LED
performance by capturing light and redirecting it towards the illuminated surface to
create an exceptionally uniform signal. OptiLens creates a wide viewing angle of 140
degrees, thus ensuring optimal lighting.
The sales director of GE Lighting Solutions EMEA, Robert Gray, adds that Tetra
PowerStrip was selected for this project because of the reliability and quality of the light
in comparison to the competition. This lighting has great potential and is a very good
investment for sign owners, as they are aware of the benefits to be gained in terms of
energy savings and maintenance costs, as well as the brand image it projects and the
minimum environmental impact.
Its high efficiency was one of the reasons the Tetra PowerStrip was chosen for
installation in the Frankfurt airport. Its uniform light last 4 times longer than fluorescent
lighting and the energy savings exceed 60% with respect to other systems with a lifetime
of some 50,000 hours.
In addition, the Tetra PowerStrip system offers numerous advantages that make it an
intelligent option. The system is compatible with RoHS and it does not contain lead,
mercury or glass, which makes maintenance easier and is environmentally friendly. It is
easy to install, and its robust design protects it from any external damage. Moreover, the
wide range of color temperatures makes it adaptable to any lighting environment (CCT
versions: 3200k, 4100k, 5000K and 7100K)
All the Tetra products are recognized in the industry as being very reliable. GE Lighting
Solutions has supplied more than 6 million meters of Tetra LED lighting systems all over
the world.
