JohnSmockbegantakingphotographswhileattheUniversityofMassachusettsAmherst
wherehemajoredinphilosophy.Aftergraduationin1991hebeganworkinginnewspapersin
Detroit,Mi.asareporterandphotographer.HeattendedtheColumbiaUniversityGraduate
SchoolofJournalismforitsreportingprogramandgraduatedin1997.Heworkedasa
freelancereporterandphotographer.In2004hesignwithSIPAPressandin2005began
workingthetheAssociatedPressmetrodeskinNewYorkCity.
Smockbeganteachingandtrainingalmostimmediatelyafterfinishinghismasters,firstaspart
ofaprogramrunbyColumbiatoteachjournalismtostudentinRomania.Hethenworkedwith
theInternationalCenterforJournalistsinCambodiaandAfghanistan.In2005hewasawarded
aKnightInternationalPressFellowship.
