EDMODO TRAINING
Introduction
Edmodo was created to bring education into a 21st century, technology infused
environment by Nic Borg, Jeff O'Hara and Crystal Hutter in 2008. Edmodo is a leading K-12
social learning network, which connects students to teachers, teachers to teachers, and students to
other teachers worldwide (Edmodo, n.d.). Edmodo focuses on communication and collaboration
amongst teachers and students.
The use of Edmodo to create a digital classroom can help the teachers WMS transform
their classes. Teachers can communicate with students by posting notes. Teachers can also post
assignments and then collect work from students, post polls and quizzes to students, and use the
Snapshot feature to see what is going on within their Edmodo classroom (Cauley, n.d). Teachers
can grade work submitted by students through the use of the Microsoft Office 365 Word,
PowerPoint and Excel apps embedded in the website itself, and post grades to the Edmodo grade
book. Edmodo recently partnered with Google, to bring even more functionality to their website.
Now, using the library function, a teacher can not only link their One Drive through an Office
365 account, but can link their Google Drive to their library. The function for cloud storage
alone, means that teachers do not need to be sitting at their desks in order to attach an assignment
and send it to students. If the assignment has been given before, it is stored directly within
Edmodo's library server, and Google Drive.
Edmodo has many strengths that could benefit WMS. Edmodo is free to use, and the
application is also free to download for both Android and Apple phones. Edmodo resembles
Facebook, from the color scheme, to how the page looks. Students immediately recognize the
website as "School Facebook" but there are limits to who students can communicate with.

2
EDMODO TRAINING
Private messages cannot be sent between students, and teachers can monitor all posts from
students that are signed up for their classes (Edmodoteacherhub, n.d.). Edmodo also has a feature
to invite parents to join class groups to see what their student is working on in the classroom.
The staff at WMS is always trying to find new ways to connect to parents.
This training session has been designed to introduce teachers to the basic functions of
Edmodo in order to easily manage their own classroom online. The participants will sign up for
an Edmodo account, and begin creating and joining groups in which they are the instructors, and
groups in which they are participants. The educators in the training session will learn how to post
notes, assignments, polls, and quizzes. Learning the basics will ensure that the educators can run
their own classroom online within a created group on Edmodo. This training session does not
cover some of the other key benefits, however, there will be a second training session created
once feedback is provided by those within the training session.
Analysis
Needs Analysis
The current situation at WMS is that many classes are not digital yet, let alone use any
digital tools in the classroom. Technology is very limited at WMS. There are only four computer
labs, which are used as Business and Computers classrooms full time. There are also five laptop
carts available, for teachers to use, however there is a long sign up list, and the laptops are
unavailable from March to the end of May due to Smarter Balanced Testing. The district does
not have a Bring Your Own Device Policy, and does not allow students to use their mobile
devices in the classroom.

3
EDMODO TRAINING
Leaders in the district are presently asking staff members to help rewrite the curriculum
for classes this summer, which includes using more and more technology in the classroom. In the
fall, teachers will be provided with Google Classroom and Google Apps Training. Edmodo is an
alternative to Google, and another option that may be easier to help teachers digitize their
classes. While the district is still not BYOD, the rewriting of curriculum could lead to some
major technology changes in the future.
This training will help to close a technological gap amongst staff members who truly are
unaware of the learning management systems available to them such as Edmodo. Many staff
members have little knowledge of the tools available, especially when the only technology
training provided to staff in the last two years pertained to Google or Smarter Balanced Testing.
Other professional development days have been dedicated to school wide activities and
department meetings focused solely on writing new curriculum. With new curriculum being
written, the Edmodo teacher community can be a logical asset for the staff at WMS and
throughout the district. Teachers can connect with other teachers worldwide at grade level and
with their content area. Teachers are always willing to share ideas, resources, and activities with
others. The Edmodo teacher community is a great asset for the staff in a situation where they are
looking to upgrade an outdated way of teaching.
Another issue facing WMS is a lack of parental involvement. Frequently, teachers
struggle to get in contact with parents and guardians for any number of the following reasons:
language barrier, families consistently moving and not updating contact information with the
school, lack of working phone numbers, parents not having email addresses, or simply having
calls and emails not returned. Parents frequently do not attend open house events or parent
teacher conferences and Planning and Placement Team meetings (PPT's). The district does have

4
EDMODO TRAINING
an online grade management system, Progress Book, however it is not user friendly for parents,
guardians, students, or teachers. Teachers may not update grades frequently enough, whereas
parents do not check Progress Book enough, or they may not even have an account. Edmodo can
solve some of these issues. Parents can sign up for a parent account in the class group, can see all
class activities, and assignments. They can also get access to see students grades, and parents and
guardians have access to contact the teacher directly via Edmodo if they do not know how to
otherwise reach the teacher. With the phone application, parents can receive updates in real time
regarding their students' progress.
Learner Analysis
The intended audience for this training are the staff members at WMS. The training will
include all staff: teachers, paraprofessionals, aides, behavior technicians, the guidance and social
work staff, and administrators. The district is looking to connect all classes to the internet over
the next few years. Not all staff members have been provided with technology training.
Paraprofessionals, aides, and behavior technicians are not typically involved in technology
training sessions. Some staff members are not very technologically savvy, others may have had
many technology training sessions. The audience itself has a very diverse background in
technology.
The staff at Wallace Middle School is about 70% female and 30% male. Several teams
are female staff only. Approximately 60% of the staff has been hired within the last year to three
years. The staff turnover has been over 30% for the last three school years. Due to changes in
staffing, the age range of teachers has changed. 80% of the staff fall in the 25-40 age range. A
majority of the staff has already been awarded Master's Degrees from various universities, and

5
EDMODO TRAINING
those who do not presently hold a Master's Degree are pursuing them presently. The staff at
Wallace Middle School is predominately Caucasian. 40% of the staff members live in
Waterbury, or are originally from the city. 50% of the staff members do participate in hosting
after school activities for students, whether that be through sports, the 21st Century after school
program, Gear Up - the grant funded program through Naugatuck Valley Community College,
The Leo's Club, community service, and the yearly musical, or are involved in local community
outreach.
Environmental Analysis
WMS is a part of a Title I school district with limited technology. However, WMS has
training spaces for technology classes. The four business and computers classes have 29 learner
computers, and a teacher's workstation connected to a Smart Board. This training will be held in
one of these rooms, and will be held live, to ensure success for the participants in the training
sessions. This will help to cut down on confusion and promote participation.
The key stakeholders for this training session are teachers and administrators, but the
training should be provided to all staff members. While teachers will be the ones setting up the
groups to represent their classes, all staff members should be trained in case they are subbing for
another staff member, or they are an aide in the classroom. It is important for all staff members
to be on the same level regardless of their position within the building. Edmodo can be use to
make building wide announcements, announcements by grade or class, and can be used as
another way to reach parents. If more staff members are trained and are willing to use Edmodo
along with the Business and Computers staff, the hope is that more parents would be involved
via the Edmodo application.

6
EDMODO TRAINING
Task Analysis
The following tasks will need to be completed in order for staff members to understand
the basic functions of using Edmodo to digitize their classrooms:
1. Sign up for an Edmodo account
2. Create a class group
3. Join "The Lion's Den" group.
4. Invite a coworker in the training session to join another coworker's group as a learner.
Each participant should join at least one other coworker's group, to ensure they can see
the website as both a teacher, and a participant. This will also show staff members the
different roles they can take on when using the website.
5. Post a note to a class as the instructor
6. Post an assignment to a class as the instructor
7. Post a quiz to a class as the instructor
8. Post a poll to a class as the instructor
9. Make a small group
10. Post in small group
11. Respond to the summative evaluation post in the "Lion's Den" group (Ledford &
Sleeman, 2000, pgs. 49-62).
Situational Analysis
In order to deliver the training effectively, one of the four computer labs would need to
be available for use, and would need to have consistently working internet. To address these
issues, trainers should meet with computer technicians prior to hosting the training session to

7
EDMODO TRAINING
ensure all technology is properly working and operable. In the event that one of the computer
labs is not able to be used, the training session could be moved to one of the other three labs. The
training session will not be moved to the library, as there are not enough desktop computers to
host 28-30 teachers, and it would be best to host the training where the educators are at a
desktop, and not using laptops.
Another challenge may be that some participants in the training session might have less
technology experience, therefore may struggle with using Edmodo. To address this challenge,
trainers will be asked to work with those struggling one on one to ensure success.
This training is designed to take place over a two hour training session, and would only
cost the district the fee for the trainer to present. This training could be hosted on a half day
professional development day, or during a full day professional development meeting. All
materials will be provided to participate digitally via Edmodo. Participants will need to have
access to a computer with internet access, and the trainer would need to have access to a
computer connected to a Smart Board. To ensure success for all staff members, training groups
should be kept to 28-30 staff members. If 28 staff members could be trained at one time, there
would need to be six training sessions in total to accommodate the entire staff of WMS. If
multiple trainers were running sessions, all staff could complete the training within a day.
Media / Technology Analysis
The technology necessary for design, development, and implementation is simply access
to an internet browser, PowerPoint, and access to Edmodo itself. Because the training will be
held live, with an in person trainer, the instruction can take place step by step. Especially with
introducing new technology, it is helpful to move at a slow pace, and work directly with the

8
EDMODO TRAINING
application versus hosting it via an e-Learning class, or through a presentation. This will
eliminate confusion for those who have never heard of Edmodo before. A PowerPoint will be put
together for review purposes and provided to those participating in the training session via a
group on Edmodo, which will be set up during the training session as well. This will allow staff
members to message the trainer when they have questions, and it will also provide the entire
group with a collaboration platform online. Teachers can share resources back and forth in the
group as well.
Design
Development Schedule
In order to create this training session, and ensure that it fits all of the basic requirements
of teaching Edmodo, it will take four weeks to develop and design. This will ensure the training
session will be evaluated multiple times, and will allow time for the training session to be
readjusted if necessary. The design aspect of the course should take no longer than a week, and
the development of the course should take no longer than two weeks. The training session should
be implemented quickly after it is created, to ensure that the educators have the option to begin
the year using Edmodo in their classrooms. This is training session that can be used at any time
during the school year, however the earlier that staff have this information, the better. It will
allow staff members to envision how they could use Edmodo, especially during the push for
more technology. It provides an excellent alternative to Google Classroom, especially with
Google Apps now embedded directly in Edmodo, and with the teacher's library now able to
connect directly to the teacher's Google Drive.

9
EDMODO TRAINING
The training session is to take no longer than two hours. There are a limit number of
spaces within the Business and Computer classrooms, so it will take six sessions of the training
class to reach every single staff member at Wallace Middle School. The trainer or trainers will
share the same account to ensure that every member of the staff at WMS is invited to the "Lion's
Den" group on Edmodo. The implementation of this course should take place over the course of
the two professional days at the beginning of the school year, prior to students attending. This
will give teachers time to attend multiple training sessions. If there are multiple trainers, the
implementation could take place over the course of one day, with sessions running
simultaneously, every two hours.
The evaluation process should take a week as well, in which all learner feedback is
examined. The summative evaluation will ask a few questions, including what more would you
like to learn about Edmodo, and how can you see yourself using Edmodo within your classroom.
These two questions will help the trainers understand what kind of supports may be needed
during the school year for teachers intending to transition to Edmodo, and what more they could
teach staff members at WMS about in the future in regards to other Edmodo features.
Course Learning Objectives
1. Within the first half hour of the training session, learners will have successfully signed up
for an Edmodo account, created their first group (class), and will have joined a group
created by the trainer after being given a group code, and will have joined a group created
by a coworker.
2. By the end of the training session, learners will be able to successfully post a note in their
Edmodo group as the instructor.

10
EDMODO TRAINING
3. By the end of the training session, learners will be able to successfully post an assignment
in their Edmodo group as the instructor.
4. By the end of the training session, learners will be able to successfully post a poll in their
Edmodo group as the instructor.
5. By the end of the training session, learners will be able to successfully post a quiz in their
Edmodo group as the instructor.
6. By the end of the training session, learners will successfully create a small group within a
class group, and will add both the trainer and a coworker to that group.
7. By the end of the training session, learners will successfully navigate groups on Edmodo,
by clicking into another group created by the trainer, and responding to other notes
posted by colleagues and the trainer by the end of the training session.
Lesson Structure
This course has been designed to provide educators with an introduction to Edmodo. This
means the course will start from scratch by having the educators sign up for their own Edmodo
account. The registration process for Edmodo is very simple. The educators are asked to put in a
valid email address and password, or are given the option to sign in with an Office 365 or
Google Account. On the next screen, the leaner will be asked to type their name, and then enter
in basic grade and subject information. Teachers are able to select multiple subjects if they teach
multiple classes. Once this screen is filled up, the leaners can hit next, and begin setting up their
first group. Once their first group is set up, the learner is directed to their homepage. The
homepage will instantly prompt the learner to invite group members to their group. The entire
process should take less than ten minutes.

11
EDMODO TRAINING
Following setting up an initial group, learners will be asked to join a common group, in
which this common group will be called The Lions Den and will be available after the
training session for staff members to communicate and share resources. Edmodo uses the term
group to represent a class itself, or to represent a group of students working together under
teacher supervision. During this training session, a group created by the educator themselves will
represent a class, and the group will represent the virtual classroom. The Lions Den will
represent a forum to ask questions, answer questions from the trainer, and to continue the
conversation from participants in the future. By joining a group, learners are taught to navigate
from one group to another, and to navigate not only how to join groups, but how to create new
groups. This also shows participants the difference in roles within a group. As a teacher on
Edmodo, the educators role could be instructor / owner of the group, or a participant, in which
they can contribute content and participate, but are not the owner of the group.
After joining The Lions Den, participants will be asked to invite a coworker, and the
trainer, to their original group. They will also be asked to join another coworkers group. This
will ensure staff members again, can navigate groups, that they learn to add members to their
groups, and begin to see the purpose of using Edmodo to collaborate professionally following
this training session.
In their original created groups, participants will then be shown how to navigate a group
(class) in it of itself. They will be introduced to all of the buttons and their functions, which will
enable a class to be managed online through Edmodo. The learners will specifically be
introduced to the four types of posts, and their purposes, which a group instructor (the teacher
on Edmodo) can share put up on their group page and share with students. By the end of the
session, learners will be asked to post at least one of each of the four following items:

12
EDMODO TRAINING

A Note, which could include hints or extra information to students, an article or extra
resources for students, an alert or reminder, or even a discussion post for students to
respond to. The trainer will specifically explain that notes are the most common form of
communication when using Edmodo.

An assignment, which could also include an attachment of the actual assignment itself,
rubric, and/or template in order to complete the assignment

A poll

A quiz which can be automatically graded by Edmodo if the answers are established
and preset in the creation of the quiz.

The posts are intentionally chunked together. The buttons on the Edmodo home page, group
page, and small group page are in the same spot, no matter which page the educator is on. They
are at the top of the page grouped across the top of the wall space where all posts are
displayed. There is one function, the last on the list, Snapshot that will not be taught during this
training session. Quiz and Poll are intentionally taught out of order, because the quiz function
does take longer to create, even though the tabs appear in the opposite order on the toolbar.
Throughout the training session, learners will be provided with helpful hints as to how to use the
technology provided by Edmodo to not only provide students with more technology in the
classroom, but how to use the features to better the classroom experience. Instead of printing
twenty five copies of a worksheet for each students to fill out, a student can be sent the
assignment and they can complete it online through the use of the Office Applications or the
Google Docs embedded directly in Edmodo. Information can be shared with students faster via a
note than it would be to print an article for every student in the classroom (Larson, 2014, pgs.
115- 130).

13
EDMODO TRAINING
After learning to post, the leaners will be asked to navigate within their virtual classroom,
and will be shown how to create a small group within that group. They will also be asked to add
both the trainer, and the educator they originally invited to their group during the training
session. They will be asked to then create a post within the small group. The small groups feature
can be very helpful in providing tiered educational experiences for students and providing
differentiation in a more organized fashion, giving teachers the option to assign choice activities,
or to create more of a personalized education for individuals enrolled in the class. Small groups
also can provide an online space for actual groups in class to safely meet online, share resources,
and work together. There is not a limit to the number of small groups a teacher can create, which
also means that students can be put in several different small groups during the course of a class
or a school year.
The last piece of the training involves the educators reflecting on what they have learned
during the training session. Participants will also be asked to discuss how Edmodo can truly
benefit their class, and what they would like to learn in the future in regards to using Edmodo in
the classroom. This represents the summative evaluation, and will allow the trainer to determine
what should be taught in the next training session in regards to Edmodo.
Activities
The training session is being held live, to ensure participants are actively engaged and
participating, and have the opportunity to get assistance immediately if necessary. Learning a
new application can be very difficult, especially if the educators lack the experience with using
technology. Learners will be asked to follow each step, as the instructor shows them how to
complete that task on the SmartBoard. This drill and practice session was specifically designed

14
EDMODO TRAINING
to model the skill, and then ask the participants to mirror what they have seen. There is time
specifically built into activities to provide practice time.
Learners are asked to invite members to their group initially, the trainer and one other
member of the training session. While they are only inviting two people during the session, the
process is the same for adding group members in the future. The teacher is provided with the
option to invite members by email, or to have Edmodo users search for their group with a six
character code, generated specifically for that group. The learner will be asked to invite the
trainer by email, and will ask their coworker to join the group using the Join a Group feature
by using the six character code.
Learners are asked to demonstrate their ability to post each item as many times as they
would like during the session. If the educator can successfully master the ability to post all four
items multiple times, it is assumed they will be able to post outside of the training session very
easily without direction. It is more likely the application will then be used in the future if the
skills are mastered within the training session. Learners will also be asked to use the small
groups function, and will learn to not only invite members to groups, but invite them to small
groups as well.
Within the training itself, the activities are very simple and very basic. However, all of
these activities will lead to an educator being able to manage their own class group on their own,
and become the stand alone digital classroom space.
Assessment
Learners will be assessed based on the ability to demonstrate the skills of posting a note,
an assignment, a poll, and a quiz to their own class group, creating a small group within a class,

15
EDMODO TRAINING
and their ability to respond to others posts as a member of another group. A participants
mastery is measured and achieved by their ability to post an item with ease, and without
assistance.
There are seven formative assessments that will demonstrate to the trainer that a
participant has achieved mastery in the basics of using Edmodo to create and manage a digital
classroom space:
1. Demonstrating the ability to navigate groups, and post in response to another persons
post, whether it be a teacher, student, or parent.
2. Demonstrating the ability to invite another group member to their group.
3. Demonstrating the ability to post a note in their own group.
4. Demonstrating the ability to post an assignment in their own group.
5. Demonstrating the ability to post a poll in their own group.
6. Demonstrating the ability to post a quiz in their own group
7. Demonstrating the ability to create a small group within the larger class group, and add
members to the small group (Larson, 2014, pg. 132).
The formative assessments display as activities within the training session itself, and
learners achieve mastery once they can complete each task assigned. Formative assessments
provide immediate feedback to learners, and within this training session, is something that
learners can also monitor on their own (it's learning, n.d). The trainer can observe mastery by
walking around the classroom, and by visiting each individuals group, as the trainer will be a
member of each participants class group. Formative assessments are used to help learners

16
EDMODO TRAINING
identify their strengths and weaknesses, so that the trainer can identify who needs assistance
immediately (Carnegie Mellon University, n.d).
There is one summative evaluation which will represent the last activity in the training
session gear towards assessing what participants learned in regards to how to use Edmodo in the
classroom. Summative evaluations can be very helpful for the trainers running the session,
because they can guide future efforts and activities for professional development in the future.
Learners will be asked to navigate to the The Lions Den Group at the end of the session, and
there will be a post that they will respond to. The post will read: After learning the basic
functions of Edmodo, can you see yourself using Edmodo to help digitize your classroom? What
features did you most like that you were shown during this training session? What else do you
wish to learn about Edmodo in the future? And, finally, how do you think that Edmodo can best
benefit your classroom? This will provide the trainer with a written review of what the leaners
will take away from the training session (Larson, 2014, pg. 132), but, will also allow each
participant to share their thoughts with their colleagues. Each participant will have their own
takeaway from the training session, and through sharing their ideas, may inspire their coworkers
in other ways. This will also demonstrate one of Edmodos true strengths, how teachers can
collaborate together very easily. While this is not the focus of this training session, the
collaborative aspect of Edmodo can truly sway teachers to continue to use the application in the
future. This will be the focus of the next training session in the Edmodo Training Sessions
Series.
Implementation
Pilot Test

17
EDMODO TRAINING
In order to ensure not only the future trainers see what is necessary to do in order for the
class to succeed, but to add in immediate feedback, the pilot test will take place in one of the
computer labs at WMS. The class will be run start to finish with the future trainers being present
as learners. A few teachers who have never used Edmodo will also be in attendance. his will
allow both the designer, and all of the trainers the opportunity to further discuss what should be
discussed, what examples can be shared with learners, and what extra hints can be provided to
learners. The pilot test will also serve as a timeline for how long a training session will take with
new learners who have never used Edmodo. The trainers can see the class from the perspective
of the learners, and from the perspective of the trainer as well.
How
The training will be delivered in a computer lab, that is equipped with twenty eight
learner computers, and a teacher's station with access to the Smart Board. The trainer will guide
learners through registering for Edmodo, and then how to use it by displaying the process on the
Smart Board, and working through the processes with the learners. The learners will be provided
with a live visual of the tasks they need to complete themselves, and will follow what they see.
Who
The original training session will be given by the designer. The subsequent training
sessions will be given by the Business and Computers teachers at WMS. The requirements for
further training staff are someone who uses technology frequently in the classroom, and someone
who uses Edmodo daily in the classroom, whether it be through the website, or the application
for a mobile device.
Do The Trainers Need Training?

18
EDMODO TRAINING
The trainers for this course will need to participate in the pilot training session, and will
be asked to sit in on another training course. Because the trainers will be required to use Edmodo
daily, they will only need to be present for two training sessions. To prepare the trainers, flash
drives, handouts, the account information, and presentation notes will be provided to the trainers.
The notes may include information that presenters can give, or the opportunity to add in their
own perspectives on using Edmodo.
What
The learner's environment must have a working Smart Board connected to the internet,
and a desktop computer. The Smart Board does need to be calibrated prior to the training session
being hosted. There need to be enough learner computer stations for the number participants. The
room needs to be reserved prior to hosting the session. Copies need to be made for participants,
and computers need to be turned on prior to the start of the training session, and checked to
ensure they have internet access.
Evaluation
During this training session, the formative evaluations are the activities themselves. The
learners will be evaluated based on what tasks they were able to complete. There are two
questions at the beginning of the summative evaluation, presented as a quiz on Edmodo, that will
represent Smile Sheet questions. These questions will evaluate how relevant the training session
was to the leaner and their position at WMS, and what their overall reaction to the training
session was. These two questions will have four options to choose from, Very Good, Good, Fair
and Poor. To evaluate Level 2 objectives, the trainer will observe whether or not the learners
were able to join groups, post a note, an assignment, a poll and a quiz. These activities are

19
EDMODO TRAINING
considered the formative evaluations in this class. The learners will be provided a checklist for
their own use during the session, and the trainer will have the same copy. Level 3 evaluations
will include determining whether Edmodo will be used in the future in these classrooms, or at
WMS in the future. While this will not be immediately known, results from some of the
questions may give the trainers a look into the future of Edmodo's use. Because the learners will
be grouped together in The Lion's Den group, the Level 4 evaluation can be presented to learners
in a few months down the road in the form of a poll. The learners can log into Edmodo and
answer whether or not they are using Edmodo, why or why not, and whether or not they have
chosen to digitize their classrooms (Kirkpatrick's Four Level Evaluation Model, 2015 and
McArdle, 2011, pgs. 239-241).
Conclusion
Edmodo is just one of the many free tools out there for teachers to use in order to bring
their classes into the 21st century. Yet, Edmodo's benefits are endless, especially for the teachers
at WMS. Teachers would have an easier time collecting digital assignments. Teachers would
also be able to send students resources and information, grade work right on the website via the
Microsoft 365 apps embedded right on the website, update grades on the grade book, and gaining
more parent involvement. Edmodo's cloud services stores assignments posted by teachers, and
the backpack feature allows students to upload their work and save it to the server from wherever
they are working. Edmodo also allows teachers to connect with others worldwide in order to
reach the same goal, how do we as teachers best educate 21st century learners? Edmodo can
truly benefit the staff members at WMS in a way that other applications and learning
management systems cannot. It can provide staff members with a way to effectively
communicate through a familiar channel for students, communicate with their families, and

20
EDMODO TRAINING
connect the school community. Edmodo can be one of the tools to bring WMS further into the
21st century, and will help teachers and students bring more technology into the classroom on a
daily basis.
