provided free of charge via a nationwide network
of information centres, a freephone 0800 42 49 46

The Biz service can assist you nd organisations,

private sector services and programmes.

Enterprise Hotline

The Enterprise Hotline team is your rst point of


contact for all business inquiries to NZTE. The service
is primarily telephone based and the team of
experienced business consultants will:
Evaluate your business needs to help you identify
where you need extra assistance or information
Provide mentoring and general business advice
(including free information on business planning
and how to guides) and/or referral to other
government providers and private sector
programmes when appropriate
Give advice on and provide access to NZTEs full
range of services and programmes for SMEs
Provide information on a range of exporting services,
including assistance with export plans, market
selection and researching international markets.
These services are supported by how to guides,
country reports and checklists.

Business Mentoring

NZTE supports two mentoring organisations


Business in the Community (BITC) and Company
Rebuilders by providing funding to help them
provide free mentors for business people throughout
New Zealand.
BITC and Company Rebuilders are important partners
of NZTE. Both organisations are charitable trusts and
provide mentoring on a voluntary basis connecting
business people like you with mentors who have
been carefully selected for their proven business
skills and experience.
The mentoring process will:
Help you identify strategies and opportunities
for growth
Build condence in your ability to plan
and manage a venture
Prepare you to meet new challenges
Show how to obtain the skills needed
to reach your objectives.

Business Incubators

Business incubators are designed to assist people


establish a business normally involving an
incubation period of one to three years. Incubation
is proven to signicantly increase the success rate
of start-ups by providing:
Shared premises
Business advice
Business services
Networking
Mentoring
A full time manager.
NZTE provides funding and support to incubators
throughout New Zealand, aimed at encouraging
the development of best practice in incubator
management and therefore to help more SMEs
successfully start up.
To date 14 established incubators and two emerging
incubators in New Zealand have been funded by NZTE
in a contestable annual funding process.

Through NZTEs Cluster Development Programme we support


a range of business clusters groups of companies and related
organisations that collaborate to grow a core area of business
and ultimately to build export income to their region.

Our step-by-step, free E-business Guide provides you


with a roadmap to help your business make optimal use
of information technology and the internet. It is full of
information and practical advice spread over 15 activity
areas personalised to your level of e-business experience
following a consultation with an e-business mentor.
The E-business Guide includes:

Background information and advice
Best-practice examples
Referral lists of recognised suppliers of e-business products
and services, including hardware, software and services you
need to take the next step in your e-business strategy.

Enterprise Training

NZTEs Enterprise Training Programme provides owners/


operators of SMEs with skills aimed at helping them to
develop and grow their business.
The free training is delivered by 16 specialist training
providers based in regions throughout New Zealand and
offers a wide range of workshops to assist you manage
your business, complemented by follow-up coaching to
enable you to implement what you have learned.
The Investment Ready training course is also available
if you want to know more about raising capital to
start, expand or diversify your business. There is also
a limited amount of training for people interested in
starting a business.

Exporter Education

NZTE runs workshops for new and established


exporters, predominantly SMEs, throughout
New Zealand.
The workshops can be tailored to meet the needs
of specic industry sectors and clusters and offer
comprehensive training and information on all
the elements of the export process.
Five workshops are offered regularly:
First Steps to Exporting
Growing Your Exports
Agents and Distributors
Pricing Strategies
Trade Fair Planning.
A range of other courses are offered periodically
including workshops such as Cultural and Business
Etiquette in Asia, UK Software Market Entry Strategies
and Doing Business in Australia.

Enterprise Development Fund

The Enterprise Development Fund is available to


entrepreneurs, start-ups, existing businesses and
groups of businesses predominantly it funds SMEs.
Through the Fund, Enterprise Development Grants are
offered to assist entrepreneurs and SMEs gain additional
business skills and obtain external expertise and
assistance in developing business projects.
Eligible costs include mentoring, advanced management
or technology-based training, specialised external advice
or expertise and efforts to investigate a new international
market or to rent space at an international trade fair.
If your application is successful you can receive 50% of the
costs, up to a maximum of $20,000 (GST inclusive). The
grants are offered on a 50:50 reimbursement basis.
The fund is aimed at businesses with an annual turnover
of less than $5 million. Businesses must be New Zealand
tax-registered, be nancially viable and operate or intend
to operate in a commercial environment.Entrepreneurs
must be New Zealand citizens and be able to show how
they will fund the project.
Also through the Fund, qualifying groups of businesses
can receive Enterprise Network Grants to assist them
build business capability or undertake international
market development activity. This support includes
grants up to a maximum of $20,000 (on a 50:50
reimbursement basis).

Please note: an Enterprise Network is a group of three or more New Zealand organisations
co-operating strategically to increase earnings through building capabilities and/or
targeting specic commercial opportunities. All members of an Enterprise Network must
be New Zealand tax-registered companies with no common ownership.

Escalator

The Escalator service is designed to fuel business


growth by providing innovative SMEs and
entrepreneurial New Zealanders with skills and
assistance to access investment opportunities.
It has been developed to address the lack of access
to and understanding of equity, venture capital and
strategic partnerships.
Through the Escalator service eligible participants
needing capital to expand, diversify or commercialise
a new concept can develop a greater understanding of
the issues around funding business growth and learn
when additional investment is needed and how to
access it. Some may also gain assistance from specialist
brokers to secure equity investment and/or a strategic
partnership.
The Escalator service is provided for NZTE by four
independent brokers Deloitte, I Grow New Zealand Ltd,
Ignition Partner and Realize Technology in association
with the Economic Development Association of
New Zealand.

Regional economic development and industry sector


development go hand-in-hand with successful
business development.
NZTE supports regions as they develop and implement
sustainable strategies for economic growth. The services
and programmes offered include:
Regional Partnership Programme up to $100,000
per region per three year cycle for strategic planning
and up to $100,000 per year per region for
capability building
Major Regional Initiatives up to $2 million for major
economic development initiatives
Polytechnic Regional Development Fund for
polytechnics and institutes of technology to develop
skills-related initiatives in partnership with local
industry and enterprise.
Regional Economic Development Advisers
NZTE also works in partnership with New Zealand
industry sectors to help improve the capability and
international competitiveness of the New Zealand
businesses involved. Working with industry sectors helps
to identify and overcome barriers to business growth
such as skills shortages or inadequate infrastructure.
