The KM Patriot Andalan, a Pertamina oil tanker, is seen as it sinks at Ternate port,

Indonesia Maluku Utara province July 31, 2013.

The oil tanker owned by Indonesias state oil and gas company, Pertamina,
spilled around 5,400 tonnes of fuel into the Molucca Sea. The KM Patriot Andalan
was carrying 7,000 tonnes of fuel from Papua. The KM Patriot Andalan was
anchored in the depot when a huge wave threw the boat ashore, hitting a
building and tearing a hole in the tanker. In the breach all the fuel transported by
tanker spilled into the sea except for 600 tons of gasoline and diesel fuel which
the workers managed to unload. None of the staff or the land staff suffered any
injuries and Pertamina employees has been trying to contain the oil spread from
spreading further and neutralize what has already spilled out. Pertamina with
divers are working to repair damage to the ship and barges being readied to
transfer whatever fuel remains aboard.
Future Steps :
1. Make a better design of ships body for example is double hull. Doublehulling - build double hulls into vessels, which reduces the risk and
severity of a spill in case of a collision or grounding. Existing single-hull
vessels can also be rebuilt to have a double hull. A double hull is a ship
hull design and construction method where the bottom and sides of the
ship have two complete layers of watertight hull surface: one outer layer
forming the normal hull of the ship, and a second inner hull which is some
distance inboard, typically by a few feet, which forms a redundant barrier
to seawater in case the outer hull is damaged and leaks. Phase out all
single-hulled tankers ship of Pertamina.
2. Funded a research for developing ingenious solutions to rapidly detect and
clean up oil spills.
3. Funded a research for making a safe, strong, sustainable, and efficient
waterborne transport
