Chapter 1 - Beginnings of Civilizations and Beginning Civilizations!

A. Historical Themes and Understanding Them - Completed in conjunction with Chapter 1
AP World Historys curriculum and examination expect us to to know about 10,000 years of history of the
entire world! 10,000 years of any one place would be a daunting task, but of the entire world may invite thoughts of
dropping this class! :) Relax! Whether you are a sophomore, junior or a senior we will work together on the tools
we will need by May for success on the Final Examination and AP World History Examination. What makes our
task possible is that we dont have to know every date and every event that ever occurred. What we have to become
are historians that understand large themes that have occurred over time and historical skills like causation and
understanding important connections in history.

Example time! Rome fell! The exam or my final will never ask you the date.a simple 10 second Google
search finds the answer. What we must understand are the factors that caused Rome to fall and some of the
decisions over time that led to it to fall as it did. What you will learn that few know is that other similar strong
empires fell roughly about the same time in India and China. Cool huh? Interesting?! Yeah! Thats the fun part of
being a historian AND the important part of being a good historian - understanding the factors leading to something
then taking a step back and looking at the connections, similarities and differences events had around the world!

!
!

Lets begin by starting to understand the 5 themes or topics within history that we will look at in different places at
different times.
State Building (SB) - Think
Think expansion of empires.
Think leaders over time like
Shi Huangdi, Ashoka, and

Think militaries and borders.

Economic Systems (ECON) - Humans need stuff for survival! Its vital! Over time, the stuff humans have desired
has changed dramatically and how they acquired those things has changed as well. Humans give, humans share,
humans take, humans trade, humans pay money. Again - the vacuum conceptpowerful empires sometimes spread
to include stuff desired whether its land for crops or raw materials like gold or silver. As Americans we know about
the desire for American independence. Important to note is that one large factor in that independence was markets!
Colonists were upset about trade practices from the British! Markets impact power! Markets also impact culture?!
Yes. When different groups trade - they talk, they exchange ideas - they exchange pieces of culture! :)

Like power, markets are fluid ever-changing things. 20 years ago a cell phone was as big as a brick and few had em
or really wanted em. Todayyou know how that market has changed dramatically!

!!

Social Structures (SOC) - This

Environment (ENV) - Humans have a unique ability to greatly impact their environment. Paper, our homesthey
require wood from trees that impact our environment on a large scale. Similarly, thousands of years ago we
developed iron and steel. To create or smelt these innovations thousands of degrees of heat was requiredagain
trees and our environment was impacted. Away from human impact, our environment is continually changing. We
have gone through ice ages and mini ice ages with temperature changes that have greatly affected migrations of
humans and how they interact. Humans impact the environment and the environment impacts humans too!

!

Global warming folks would say we can have a huge impact quickly historically speaking, but when we look at ice
ages they took hundreds of years to impact and change our world.

Geography Pages 10-13 - Civilization in Ancient Mesopotamia / Babylonia and Assyria
Do not get caught in the groups and who came when and where! Let just look at a few things on these pages and
understand the big picture of Mesopotamia. Positively for Mesopotamia is that it is a warm yet fertile region with 2
strongly flowing rivers from the north into the Persian Gulf. There is desert to the west-icky and hot- and
mountains the east - Zagros Mts. Because the region is flat it was good for farming, but also easier to conquer
because of fewer natural protections.this is why there were so many groups trying to control this regionand
interesting when we look at Iraq today.has much changed with different groups trying to control this place??!!!!

Creating a Thesis. Complete in conjunction with Chapter 1

/10 pts
Developing your thoughts and ideas in essays is crucial to your writing. For us in AP World History, the thesis in
your writing is how you develop the focus for these thoughts and ideas. The thesis is your heart and all the words
we have in an essay can be seen as the blood which all circulate through and around your heart - the thesis.
Lets begin to understand how to best write a thesis.

!!

A thesis is:

A thesis is NOT:

at the beginning of your essay.

in the middle or end of your essay.

easily recognizable (will always underline!).

unclear or unrecognizable.

is one or more sentences.

a fragment of a sentence

able to provide an answer to the question

posed with insight.

just a restatement of the question.

11

A thesis is:

A thesis is NOT:

able to take a STRONG STANCE answering the

question posed.

a weak uninspiring sentence or two at the

beginning of an essay.

!!

We will have to develop 2 thesis types for 2 of the 3 essays types we have to be able to do:
1.

Long Essay Question (LEQ) - This will be an essay that will incorporation 1 or more periods we will study.
You will have to take a position answering the question posed.

2.

Document Based Question (DBQ) - How a group of selected documents are the same or differ in various ways.
We will look at how to develop a DBQ later, but we will focus here on a workable thesis for Comparative and

Changes/Continuity Essays.

Lets dive in and start with our prompt and work on a thesis:

Social Scientists point to the high school ages of 14-18 to be among the most crucial years in
the development of a young persons life.
Create a thesis with specific rationale to support or refute this statement.

Point of View (POV) of a Document - Complete with Chapter 3

/5 pts
Point of view and audience focus on the perspective of the writer and who the writer is writing for. People dont just
write words to write words - authors have purpose - to inform, to entertain, to make a point about something. AP
wants to make sure we see points of view, their audience, and finally any potential bias in their words. We have to
be critical of the documents we see. Critical does not mean to prove the document is wrong or a lie, but to see
words from the lens of the author, why they may have written what they wrote and what they may be trying to show
to someone.

For example, Nazi Joseph Goebbels writes about the superiority of the white race. Reading this document, bells and
whistles need to go off in your mind. Nazi! Likely biased toward the white race. Credible? Likely not! Hes
biased, hes racist! His audience is likely other Nazis and Germans showing that the white race is superior and he
will go to great lengths - lying undoubtedly to prove his point. This example does not mean this writing lacks value
among historians - it would have amazing value! - but it would prove points about the Nazis, bias, racism, all those
negative things we associate with them!

Now read this example from the period we just finished:

Now lets SOAPSTone

The young Nazis were encouraged to believe that a ski race was a competition in which Germans sought to prove
not that they were better skiers than other people but more importantly, that Nazism was better than democracy. The
only thing that mattered to
them was victory, and all means to this end were justified. The downhill course was closed to all competitors the day
before the race, but the Nazis, we soon learned, had practiced the course at dawn. They also turned the technique of
making protests into a fine art. Any decision that could be challenged was challenged in order to provide themselves

There were many pressures on American athletes because of the presence of the Soviet team in 1952. They were in a

Lets look at the following primary resource quote from a Roman Patrician & Statesman named Seneca who lived
from about 4BCE-65CE and went to watch the Gladiators at the Roman Coliseum one day.

By chance I attended a mid-day exhibition, expecting some fun, wit, and relaxation. But it was
quite the reverse. The previous combats were the essence of compassion.(this was) pure murder.
The men have no defensive armorIn the morning they throw men to the lions and the bears; at
noon, they throw them to the spectators. The spectators demand that the slayer shall face the man
who is to slay him in his turn; and they always reserve the latest conqueror for another butchering.
The outcome of every fight is death, and the means are fire and sword.

Oppian Law POV Exercise

political rights. They were not
address the Senate, nor mill
who spent time in public places
upon. Nonetheless, there were
power of public protest to get
demonstration of women

Republic, women had no

allowed to vote, directly
about in the forum. Women
like the forum were frowned
times when women used the
what they wanted. One was the
against the Oppian Law.

The Law was passed following

the disastrous defeat of the
Romans by Hannibal. Because
of these wars and this defeat by
Hannibal and Carthage, many Roman men had died. By law, their wives and daughters had
inherited their lands and monies, allowing many women to become quite rich. The Roman State,
in order to help pay for the cost of the wars, decided to tap into women's wealth by passing the
Oppian Law. It limited the amount of gold women could possess and required that all the funds
of single women and widows be deposited with the state. Women also were forbidden to wear
dresses with purple trim (the color of mourning and a grim reminder of Rome's losses). Nor
could they ride in carriages within Rome or in towns near Rome.

!
!
!

Source: Cato, a Male Roman Consul and Patrician, who spoke of the Oppian Law after
witnessing female demonstrations.!
Our ancestors did not want women to conduct any - not even private - business without a (male) guardian;
they wanted them to be under the authority of parents, brothers, or husbands; we even now let them
snatch - the gods help us! - at the government and meddle in the Forum and our assemblies. What are they
doing now on the streets and crossroads, if they are not persuading the senators to vote for repeal? Give
the reins to their unbridled nature and this unmastered creature, and hope that they will put limits on their
own freedom. They want freedom in all things.
If they are victorious now, what will they not attempt? As soon as they begin to be your equals, they will
have become your superiors. What honest excuse is offered, pray, for this womanish rebellion? 'That we
might shine with gold and purple,' says one of them, 'that we might ride through the city in coaches on
holidays as though triumphant over the conquered law and the votes which we captured by tearing them
from you...'
Pity that husband - the one who gives in and the one who stands firm! What he refuses, he will see given
by another man. Now they publicly solicit other women's husbands, and, what is worse, they ask for a law
and votes, and certain men give them what they want
I vote that the Oppian Law should not, in the smallest measure, be repealed; whatever course you take,
may all the gods make you happy with it.

Movie: Attila - Attila was a made for TV movie by the USA Network in 2003 starring Gerard Butler.
Though not a perfect movie historically and sometimes the storyline is downright cheesy, it is a good

fight because the Romans promise the spoils of war. Aetius does this to try to get rid of
an enemy in the Visigoths to then focus on the Huns. Attila joins in this fight and after
the victory, he goes to Rome to celebrate. There he develops a love affair with the
Emperors sister - Anoria. Attila returns home with the word of his uncles death. His
cousin Bleda then challenges him to a duel to rule the Huns. Attila wins this duel as the
young girl Galen sacrifices herself for Attila to win. Attila is now the leader of the Huns
and he wins the love of the red haired woman - Ankara.

BIG PICTURE A-Z - to 600 CE!

A. MIGRATIONS - Early hunting & foraging bands of humans gradually migrated from their
origin in East Africa around the world. Innovations like fire use and tools developed and
people adopted and exchanged ideas and goods.!

B. AGRICULTURE - As the world warmed over thousands of years, some groups developed
agricultural techniques that allowed them to became more sedentary and construct our
earliest political, economic and social systems. Villages emerged with leaders, laws,
protection of food stores, transfers of goods, and hierarchies among people.!

C. 2 SOCIETIES - Sedentary peoples stayed in one place living on agriculture and

domesticated animals. Pastoralists moved from place to place following animals and moving
herds of animals living off the earth. These 2 societies will trade with each other, learn from
each other, and fight each other!!

D. EARLY CIVILIZATIONS - As pastoralism continued among some, foundational civilizations

developed in a variety of settings where agriculture flourished, including Mesopotamia in the
Tigris and Euphrates River Valleys, Egypt in the Nile River Valley, the Indus River Valley, the
Yellow River, and areas in the Americas. These civilizations began a long history of negative
environmental impacts of deforestation and the overuse of land.!

E. CULTURE BINDS CIVILIZATIONS - Culture played a significant role in unifying people

and their civilizations through laws, language, literature, early religions, traditions, and art.!

F. RELIGIONS GROWTH - Further developments of religious and cultural traditions like

Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Confucianism provided a bond among people and
spread through trade and travel. These beliefs also changed and created new social
structures like the caste system in India and Confucian beliefs creating respect and piety of
elders.!

G. EMPIRE BOOM - The number and size of empires grew dramatically alongside the
increased use of iron and new technologies as rulers imposed political unity on increasingly
larger areas. These empires created political harmony across large land areas, but also created
social inequality more likely. Key states and empires include: Qin and Han China, Mauryan
and Guptan India, Greek City-States, Rome, and Persia.!

H. EMPIRE BUST - As the Roman, Han, Persian, Mauryan, and Gupta empires expanded
over time they also encountered political, cultural, and administrative difficulties that they could
not manage, which eventually led to their decline, collapse, and transformation over this
time.!

I. TRADE SPREADS EVERYTHING - Land routes like the Silk Routes and water routes like the
Indian Ocean Trade Networks became the basis for trade, communication, and the exchange of
ideas and beliefs. Technology, religious and cultural beliefs, food crops, domesticated
animals, and disease pathogens all were exchanged along these routes affecting people
across wide areas positively and negatively.!
